I think height adjustable seatposts are the "next step" in all mountain riding.
With 20 years of riding mountain bikes, I can ride without one and still have a blast. In fact I don't make adjustments that often- only on "serious" technical sections.
Having said that, a height adjustable seatpost just makes negotiating technical terrain easier.
This thing makes tight downhill switchbacks, getting over logs, and steep descents (where you need to get your butt over the rear wheel) much easier to get through. Takes about 1 second to adjust even with the non-remote model.
Just getting the seatpost a bit lower gets your center of gravity lower and allows you to move the bike around easier.
I've only been using one for a month or so, so the jury is still out on longevity of this product. FYI, These things do have a bit of "slop" in them in terms of side-to-side rotation. The local bike shop says that the slop will get worse over time- and has on mine. I don't notice it on the bike unless I consciously rotate my hips though. I'm not sure that this seatpost is strong enough for strict downhillers, big jumpers, or "large" riders if you expect it to last for a few years. Big hits are going to put stress on the height adjustment mechanism. One of the other height adjustable seatposts (gravity dropper), may be more appropriate if you want to catch big air or take big hits.
I think the simpler, lighter under the seat control is appropriate for most riders. No need to run yet another cable to the handlebars. Besides, if you can't take your hand off the handlebar for 1 second to make the adjustment, you probably need to work on riding skills before buying a $200 seatpost.
Summary-
Great fun product that makes technical riding easier. May not be strong enough for DH type use. Get your bike handling skills up first and learn to ride technical terrain before you invest in a $200 seatpost. Recommend
