(More customer reviews)I bought this as a replacement for a Polar CS200cad, which I've used for many years, but it has a tendency to break the mounting pegs on the back of the unit, or the twist-on/twist-off mount breaks after repeated use. I have sent at least two CS200 units to Polar and had the back covers replaced so I coudl get new mounting pegs, but I lost one CS200 when it fell off my bike going fast down a bumpy road during a ride. I thought I'd try the new CS500.
Good points:
(1) Much more secure bike mount. The unit mounts securely and won't release unless a push mechanism is used.
(2) Much larger screen than CS200, so easy to see what you need at a glance.
(3) Easier to cycle through menus - the unit itself is pressed on either side to go forward and back through menus.
(4) Compatible with w.i.n.d. power meters and other w.i.n.d. devices (i.e.. just Polar as far as I know)
(5) Records altitude and temperature.
Not so good points:
(1) Signficantly more expensive than CS200cad, so if you don't use a power meter, it may not make sense.
(2) Not compatible with Polar's non-w.i.n.d. sending units (such as those on CS200), which means I had to swap out my old Polar speed sending unit and install the w.i.n.d. compatable speed sensor.
(3) If you use a polar watch when you ride, like the F11 I use, the chest strap for the CS500 won't work with it.
(4) You have to buy the cadence sending unit if you want to measure cadence.
(5) You have to buy the seperate w.i.n.d. power senor unit if you want to measure power.
(6) Not compatable with ANT+ power meters (e.g. PowerTap Wireless, Quarq Cinqo and SRM, or it would seem the majority of power meters).
(7) You have to buy a seperate infrared USB device to easily transfer data to you computer. I did not transfer data from the CS200, but typically wore the Polar F11 watch to transfer workout data through my computer's microphone and manually added speed, distance and cadence from teh CS200. Since the CS500 heart rate strap is not compatible with the F11, I'll need to try another approach.
