This Needak "soft bounce" non-folding rebounder serves as my low-impact treadmill. I have an artificial hip and arthritis. With healthier joints, I might have been into jogging and other on-your-feet exercises, since I have the right temperament for them. For 30+ years, though, my joint pain stopped me. I also get back pain routinely just in the "pavement-pounding" that I must do in the course of my day.
When the rebounder arrived, I placed it in a corner, with the handrail serving as the third side of the enclosure. The open side faces a television/Wii combination, with ample free space between them and the rebounder.
I tried walking in place while watching TV, but the new rebounder really found its niche in my health-improvement routine when I began using it with the Wii fitness game "Walk It Out" (Walk It Out). To play, I place the Wii Nunchuk, a secondary controller linked to the main remote control, in the pocket of my workout pants to register the literally thousands of music-driven steps that I take on the rebounder.
Were I to try this on any other surface, pain would stop me very quickly, and repeated pounding could dislodge some part of my artificial joint, requiring more surgery. Using the rebounder with hip precautions and the self-imposed additional rules mentioned below, however, I have had NO PAIN, even after really long, downright humid workouts. There have been no mechanical effects on the artificial joint (this, verified via X-ray at checkups), ...and the game is fun! I expect that I'll also find other ways to use the rebounder for further low-impact exercise and fun.
Caveat: Please, be sure to read the rest of this review. Fun is nice, but health is precious.
Artificial joints require constant vigilance, as dislocation/damage cannot be repaired without further major surgery. Anyone with an artificial joint should have been taught in rehab the standard precautions, such as "hip precautions", to apply to every part of life. When exercising, as in all movement, these still apply. Severe bone wear and arthritis, among other conditions, also impose the need for extra care in choosing one's movements and forms of exercise.
For me, this vigilance quickly became second nature. I consider it a good trade for reduced pain and continued mobility.
So, I consult my orthopaedic-rehab M.D. and/or physical therapists to learn whether something I'm considering, e.g., my intended use of this equipment, might help me or hurt me. In seeking and in following their advice, as well as in all daily activities, I find I must be tiresomely but doggedly responsible for regulating my own movements, as I do *not* crave more surgery. This means keeping hip precautions as well as any others necessary to stay healthy.
Thus, while using my rebounder, I adhere to the following three ironclad cautionary rules, which I adopted willingly:
--> While on the rebounder, I step lightly in place, never(!) bounce, to avoid damaging or dislodging my artificial hip and to spare other, worn joints.
--> I always, always force myself to hold onto the stabilizing bar while on the rebounder, however good I may be feeling about my balance, because a fall could be catastrophic, again because of the hip implant.
--> I avoid fast, jerky movements that could dislocate the artificial joint.
Added to standard hip precautions, my self-imposed rules protect me.
Observing these somewhat tedious but critical precautions, I nonetheless find to my joy that the softly springy surface of the rebounder enables me to exercise and to have fun in ways that I thought were closed to me. I cannot overstate the enormity of this improvement in my life. Each person faces unique circumstances, so there's no guarantee that this would work for others, but this rebounder really helps me.
