I frequently read that the kettlebell can increase your calorie burn during a workout by 60%. While I was curious to put that to the test, I already knew I enjoyed doing a kettlebell workout from having gotten to play with them once in a gym and, not only feeling the results the next day, but feeling that the workout was FUN. (For me a workout is like broccoli sprouts...I know it's good for me so I partake of it more than I want to, but I still have to make myself do it and rarely consider it fun.)
CALORIE BURN: Does it really increase your calorie burn by 60%? Well, no. But it does truly sizzle some calories. I wear a bodybugg to measure how many calories my body burns per day and can, therefore, also measure how many calories I burn during a particular workout and how many calories I burn per minute during any activity and per day. I say this only so you'll know I have some range of scientific measurement rather than simply perceived exertion. The beauty of a kettlebell workout is that typically you'll burn more calories during a cardio workout, but a strength training workout makes you burn less during the workout--but more the rest of the day...this combined the two. I burned more calories by getting my heart rate up with kettlebell moves during the workout and continued to burn them at a higher rate the rest of the day. It wasn't 60% more calories than I normally burn but I did burn a few hundred more than I normally do in a cardio routine and my metabolism did remain elevated throughout the day...what I burn is going to be different than anyone else because of the variables of muscle density, height, weight, workout, etc... but there is a reason these were adopted from Russia even for hardcore bodybuilders. It works AND it adds interest to what you do, for a good solid workout.
HOW TO USE ONE: This is basically a round weight with a handle making it easy to grip. In any exercise where you would use two weights combined (hard to grip) you can use the kettlebell for better reps. However, their true beauty is in a routine designed specifically for the kettlebell because the motions you are able to do with swinging and moving with this equipment in mind, will work muscles you would otherwise often not hit in any regular strength or circuit routine and zap more fat. For women, there are some beginner kettlebell dvds on Amazon if you are just starting out, but if you are slightly more fit and able to do other aerobic or strength routines, you might go for: The Ultimate Body Sculpt and Conditioning With Kettlebells DVD or Powerbody: Bootcamp.
WEIGHT: Although many kettlebell sites will suggest women begin with a 17 lb weight, most find that too heavy for an entire routine. Personally I think you should look at what weights you are already able to use in a strength routine. If you use 2 5-lb. handweights, then I would use a 10 lb. to start. I use 2 6-or-7-lb. handweights so the 12 lb. was ideal for me, but it is heavy and sometimes I still do less reps than suggested on a kettlebell dvd.
WHY I CHOSE THIS ONE: Troy makes barbells. They are known for quality pieces and kettlebells can be unbalanced or the wrong weight so, regardless of the brand name you choose, I'd suggest going for a kettlebell made by someone who specializes in weights/barbells already. This is a perfect handle...big enough to grip but not so wide it makes gripping or moves awkward. And the texture of the handle keeps it in your sweaty hand...swinging a weight around your room that doesn't have a good grip is not a good thing, for obvious reasons. The whole piece is metal but the base is dipped in a lime green vinyl. This is very important if you have any kind of floor you wish to protect, as kettlebells that are just metal scratch surfaces easily.
STRENGTH TRAINING ONLY: If you wish to use these strictly for strength training rather than a circuit workout that I prefer, there are tons of kettlebell books and dvds to help you if you are new to it. It's also a great workout to do with your man if you are looking for one...since men using a heavier resistance get a great workout doing the same moves you will benefit from with a lighter weight. You can both do the same workout using different weights of kettlebells.
NEGATIVES: I try to brainstorm any negatives for something I love in order to still give a full picture for those with an opposing opinion...it's a kettlebell though...what can I say? I guess if I had to pull something off the top of my head that I would personally like if I could create my ideal kettlebell, it would be adjustable in weight so I could go up or down in weight depending upon the workout or as I progress in building muscle. However, I did look at some adjustable kettlebells and they were either not the weights I wanted or not vinyl coated. Still, that would be my ideal.
Also: Know that this is one kettlebell. That's what I wanted for my routines as do most, but, because some people use them in place of weights and want one in each hand, know that you are not getting a pair.
CONCLUSION: Adds interest and results to my routine, good quality kettlebell.

Body-Solid Kettlebells Review

Body-Solid Kettlebells

I just spent an hour going through the stock of a local fitness company. The Body Solid kettlebells are really well-finished - not quite as smooth as the picture makes it out to be, but close (!) and quite a bit smoother and better finished than the GoFit, Cap, Troy, Apollo, and Powermax bells I looked at recently. I found several that I could buy and never bother to touch up the handles, in fact. They're almost as smooth as most epoxy coated kettlebells.
The handles graduate in size somewhat, but are roughly 1 3/8" or 35 mm through most of the range (appx. 20 - 50 pounds), and a bit smaller below that and a bit larger above. Space inside the handle is a bit under 3", but measurements were hard to get very accurately with a tape measure. Suffice it to say that handle diameters are sufficiently beefy, and space is certainly mainline.
The paint on all the examples I saw, except one oddball, was shiny black. Body Solid describes it as enamel, though the dealer insisted it was powder coat. It scratches white, and some on the rack showed some scratches like this. I actually preferred the matte finish on the oddball, but the dealer insisted that all new ones are the shiny black.
I like them, and they're well-priced. The only problem - for me - is that I prefer kettlebells in conventional kilo weights, as virtually every book, video, training regime, article, etc. that you read on kettlebells uses kilos (standards weights start with 4kg and go up in 4kg increments). Pound weight is a non-issue for the 35 pounder, as it's only 3 ounces different than a 16 kilo bell. The 55 pounder, however is 2.2 pounds heavier than a 24. Body Solid doesn't make bells above 75 pounds. All competition bells, should you develop that interest, are in standard kilogram weight progressions as well.

It is what it is. Its a ball of metal, attached to a large metal handle. Its not particularly pretty, but it gets the job done. Handle is large enough to challenge grip and the black finish makes it slightly easier to look at.
Measured in lbs not kilos, so may throw you off depending on existing/future kettlebells and trying to pair them.

I couldn't believe I was able to get a kettle bell for this amount! I got it for my husbands birthday and he loves it. He thinks now that he has it he also needs a lighter one so that he can do all his exercises with the kettlebell, but that will have to wait. The only thing I wish was different, it I wish it were epoxy coated, but that is just a preference. Maybe for the next one I will sped the extra money for the epoxy coated one.
The service was GREAT and delivery was fast. Thanks!

JFit Premium Vinyl Kettlebell 8-15 lb Set Review

JFit Premium Vinyl Kettlebell 8-15 lb Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have not purchased this set of kettlebells yet, but have done the next best thing...I borrowed a set from a relative and have been using them for a bit over one month now. I must say that after actually using them and due to the fact that I really need to return them one of these days, I plan to purchase my own set right after the holidays.
This particular set which includes 8, 10, 12, and 15 pound weights was and is absolutely perfect for my needs. I am not now, nor have I ever been into the body building thing, ergo I do not need large amounts of weight. I use these strictly for toning and cardiopulmonary exercises and weight control/loss. For that they are ideal in my case.
Using these weights is a bit different that using free weights or machine weights. The exercises are much different with more swinging and flexing that you would normally expect. I would strongly suggest one of the many fine video or CDs available which feature full workouts. I admit that I did not use a video, working mostly from trial and error and advice from those who have used them. I could probably have saved myself some aches and pains and could have started with a more effective workout.
Like another reviewer here, I found that the handles of these weights are quite smooth which cut down on friction blisters. They also fit my hands perfectly. The vinyl coating does indeed cut down on the noise. Do take heed though of the warning that these are for indoor use only. They would not do well out in the wet.
Now as to the calorie burn. Proponents of these weights and sellers make claim to a 40 to 60 percent increase in your ability to burn calories when these weights are being used. Being a skeptic by nature I cannot truthfully state that this is true. I do know that after use my body feels like it has been put though much more by using these weights rather than traditional. It only makes sense that they would increase the bodies capability of using up calories...it is just that I do not know for sure how many and at what rate. I do know that after using these for approximately 30 days, three times a week, I shed 15 pounds of excess fat. I suppose that is an endorsement of sorts as I certainly did not change my eating habits during that time period.
Each person must choose their own direction with any product of this sort. By that I mean what weights to start with, to continue with and which are more effective. The same holds true with the particular exercise regimen you decide upon. No one knows your body like you do and these decisions, among others, have to be made by only you.
Please do take note here. For the older individual, of whom I am one, you must realize that there is much more joint rotation with these things than traditional weights. If you have problems with arthritis or other joint related chronic illnesses you might want to consider this. I personally have a touch of arthritis and am prone to bursitis in my shoulder joints. You need to tread lightly and find what your limitations are. Hey, we cannot all stay 18 years old all of our lives even though we may mentally feel that way. As Dirty Harry I think once said "A man (or woman) has to know their limitations."
Overall these are nice and useful weights. The price here is quite reasonable even with shipping.

Weider SpaceSaver 40-Pound Adjustable Kettle Bell Review

Kettlebells can be very expensive, so the idea of getting a few for the price of one was appealing. After receiving the product I used it for about three weeks. Aside from being noisy as the plates clank together, it was fine. Then the handle started to get loose. I thought to myself, okay no problem, I'll just tighten it back up. Took off the plates to look at the screws and saw where they must have skimped on the cost of the production. The top is a plastic plate which the handle screws into. The screws are at a nearly impossible angle to tighten. I finally found a way to angle in a bit from a ratchet set, and the screws stripped -- they too are cheap. I returned the product at once. I'll be damned if the handle is going to come off this thing mid-swing, especially after paying $200. Look for Kettlebells USA online and get the real deal. You can still get two or three kettlebells for the price of this one, and they don't take up THAT much room. Nice try Weider, but you gotta make it silent, sturdy, and easy to fix in order for this to be remotely worth it.

Personalize your workout with the Weider SpaceSaver 40-pound adjustable Kettlebell. Also known as a PowerBell, the weight quickly adjusts from 10 to 40 pounds, yet takes up the space of only a single Kettlebell. As a result, it's ideal for several family members, or for performing several different exercise types without buying additional weights. Each PowerBell features an oversized, powder-coated handle that's user-friendly, non-slippery, and easy to transition from hand to hand. With a PowerBell in play, you can perform bicep curls, tricep extensions, shoulder raises, and a host of other exercises without having to dedicate an hour-and-a-half to your routine. That's because studies show you get the same cardio benefits with a 20-minute PowerBell workout as you do running on a treadmill for 20 minutes at 6 miles per hour, plus it works every muscle in your body.
To help you get the most from your workout, the PowerBell comes with a PowerBell Workout DVD that engages every muscle in your body. Hosted by former U.S. Special Forces member and professional Kettlebell trainer Michael Skogg, the DVD takes you through a full-body, functional workout that delivers real-life results. In total, the PowerBell supports more than 1,000 strength and cardio exercises, from basic moves to advanced routines. Finally, the PowerBell includes a fitness journal that helps you track your workout progress.

Stamina 36-Pound Adjustable Kettle Versa-Bell Review

Stamina 36-Pound Adjustable Kettle Versa-Bell

Pros: Shaped (pretty much) like a traditional bell; weight changes are super quick and easy
Cons: A lot of plastic, slight rattling from the weight plates
New to kettlebell training, so I don't have a lot of experience to rate this against other types of bells.
The handle and top of the dome that you see in the picture is metal, the red part is a plastic dome that conceals the weight plates. It seems sturdy enough for its intended use (lifting, swinging, etc.), but I could imagine shattering the plastic pretty easily if I dropped it on a hard surface. The internals seem pretty solid though. Not perfectly round, it's slightly flattened on the sides parallel with the handle, but the top portion is round.
Weight changeover is amazingly quick, pull down a rubber bumper on the side, slide the pin out, put it back in the new hole, flip the bumper back up, and lift. Five seconds, tops, and foolproof. It has an internal weight stack, unused weights remain on the floor on an included mat.
My other first impression is that it is pretty big--think volleyball size. Doesn't bother me, but it's considerably bigger than the 35-pound solid bell at my gym. A typical 16-pound fitness bell would probably be a third of the size.

With the Stamina Adjustable Kettlebell, there is no need to have an entire set of kettlebells or to guess at which weight is right for you. One Stamina Adjustable Kettlebell replaces an entire set of conventional kettlebells at a fraction of the cost, and takes up very little storage space. The adjustable kettlebell is six kettlebells in one. A simple locking pin let's you choose 16 lbs., 20 lbs., 24 lbs., 28 lbs., 32 lbs., and 36 lbs.: that's six weights in 4 lb. increments.

I purchased this product for both my husband and me to use. We've had this product for one week and we've both completed two workouts. We were extremely disappointed to find that the workouts were not contiguously filmed, but are comprised of multiple segments strung together. It's very demotivating when you know that the people you're watching on the screen aren't doing this workout in its entirety!
Each segment is played twice and that is the whole workout. I think circuit training is very beneficial but I don't appreciate having to hear and see the exact same thing twice in just one workout. Additionally, the same clips are used in multiple workouts. These workouts do not offer as much variety as is claimed. The cardio workout was comprised of several of the same exercises as the resistance and abs workouts.
Furthermore, we had to be very careful as the instructor is not always doing the same number of reps on each side of the body. During the week 1 resistance workout, he instructed us to perform 7 reps on one side and only 3 on the other. That's a huge difference and very unhealthy I might add.
I am currently attempting to return this product which has been a frustrating process in itself as the customer service phone number does not give customers the option of speaking to a live person; you must either leave a voicemail or email them.
Save yourself some time and money and look elsewhere.
