Pearl iZUMi Men's Pro Softshell 3X1 Jacket Review

Pearl iZUMi Men's Pro Softshell 3X1 Jacket

This jacket is amazing, after I'd convinced myself to spend the $$$ on it. The jacket's two layers together kept me warm (almost too warm) on a 2 hour ride in 28 degree weather the other day, wearing only a long-sleeve baselayer underneath. Still, it's not bulky or restrictive--well cut sleeves and waistline kept me from choking myself in the drops and kept my back warm the entire time. Great product.
One little note - I had to go up a size from my normal to get one that fit. I wear size M jerseys, bases, t-shirts, etc, but a medium on this was too small for me if I was wearing anything (even just a base) under it. Had to trade it in for a L, which fits very nicely.
Bottom line - if you're looking for a jacket that'll let you ride through the winter (and you're not in Alaska or Minnesota) that won't cost as much as a Assos or Rapha, this is it.

This jacket is supple, soft, and comfortable. It fits more like a lined jersey than a jacket, and yet its thermal properties are superlative. It retains heat while deflecting wind and venting perspiration. Other jackets that do not have adequate venting become clammy inside. The Sugoi RS Zero keeps you incredibly warm while simultaneously wicking away moisture. I wore this jacket on a cold ride in Oberlin Ohio last weekend, with a merino wool sweater underneath. It was 34 degrees when we started, and I may have been too warm with the Sugoi. Naturally, some people feel the wind and cold more than others, and one cannot ensure that every cyclist will be immune to freezing temperatures with this jacket. I suspect the jacket will be warm enough for most even when the temperature drops down to the 40s and 30s (perhaps lower?), so long as they wear the kind of base layer that properly insulates and allows for evaporation. (Cotton, for example, will remain wet and become cold....) This is the most amazing jacket that I have tried, though my experience is subjective of course. I do, however, believe it is pretty sugoi (Japanese, for stupendous)....

Pearl iZUMi Men's P.R.O. Barrier WXB Cycling Jacket Review

Pearl iZUMi Men's P.R.O. Barrier WXB Cycling Jacket
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent jacket for bicycling in wet, wet and cold or windy weather. I commute to work in Seattle, about 20 miles per day. I cycle recreationally, too, averaging 30 miles per ride a couple of days a week. All told, over 4,000 miles per year. So, using durable performance equipment is a priority. I've used Pearl Izumi cycle wear for many years and have come to rely upon the quality and design of their products. Not all have met expectations but on average PI products have performed well.
The past 3 years have seen, in my personal opinion, an overall improvement in design and performance. The P.R.O. series, in particular, has been worth the relatively high price. In particular, the trim anatomical fit (no excess material flapping in the wind), detailing (garaged, waterproof zippers) and overall attention to detail has been very good. Some other products are still a bit behind the curve (the velcro closure of the shoe covers is bulky and stiff, for example).
The P.R.O. Barrier WxB Cycling Jacket and Pants are excellent examples of design and performance. Keep in mind that while the fabric is "breathable", you'll still sweat and moisture will build inside the jacket. On the other hand, the 3-layer laminate works better than the AmFib fabrics on some of the other current and older PI garments. It has some stretch and the tailoring of the jacket is excellent (the sleeves, for example, are plenty long enough to cover the gauntlets of my gloves and the asymmetric cut keep the cuffs in place). The "Napoleon" breast pocket fits my iPhone and the waterproof zippers throughout the jacket keep the water out (I put in the iP in a ziplok baggie). The detached hood has been much maligned by others but I find it very effective (the cut away sides aid visibility and narrow tab attachment at the back keep water from draining into the collar).
Two weeks ago it rained in 1.5" in a day and the rain during my ride into work was torrential. The jacket kept me relatively warm and, while not completely dry, dry enough in the areas that mattered. Just remember to not expect miracles from it's breathability. In nearly all other critical respects, it's great. None of my other jackets would have worked half as well.
The P.R.O. WxB Pants were a pleasant surprise. Most pants are basically garbage bags that rub crankarms or flap in the wind. Truly annoying. The P.R.O. pants, though, are anatomically cut and stretch of the fabric is a big assist. The taper of the lower legs are snug around the tops of my shoe covers and taper up to the knees. The knees have enough "ease" built in the tailoring to prevent the fabric from tightening up at the top of the pedaling stroke but not so much that it bunches up and rubs the bike frame on the down stroke. Even at a high pedaling RPM (80 - 100rpm), there's really no annoying impediment due to the cut of the pants. the 9" waterproof zippers keep water out and allow ease of access. I use suspenders instead of the adjustable elastic cord to prevent bunching at the waist.
Like the P.R.O. WxB jacket, breathability is acceptable but not perfect. You'll sweat but with leg warmers or tights under the rain pants, it's acceptable. The design and ability to keep the rain from soaking your tights, shorts or leg warmers is a huge plus.
Both the jacket and pants have reflective striping (attached by "welds") and are fully seam sealed. As a system, I don't think you could go very far wrong with the P.R.O WxB jacket and pants. Highly recommended despite the high price.

If you're not the kind to skip your Saturday ride, even when it's coming down in buckets outside, make sure you're equipped with the Pearl Izumi Men's P.R.O. Barrier WxB Jacket. The storm-ready P.R.O. Barrier fabric may be highly waterproof, but you won't be stewing in your sweat behind its protection thanks to the fabric's extreme breathability. This jacket has you covered in nasty weather, but the soft, quiet stretch fabric will make it your go-to cover-up in a range of conditions.Product Features

This jacket is very warm and cuts the wind pretty well, which was a pleasant surprise. It's comfy for casual wear, but was also nice and warm (without overheating) for a 4-mile run at 35 degrees. There is a velcro key pocket inside one of the side pockets, which is nice to have. Looks great, too! My only complaint is that the sleeves are about 1/2 to one inch too short for me, so I'm going to really have to be careful washing it and hope that it doesn't shrink.

I am a Lululemon fanatic... but I really do not like thumb holes! so I don't buy any of their new jackets/hoodies. I bought this jacket to cycle in the Las Vegas winter weather and it has a good warmth to it. I can see my self using it daily to bike to and from school. It's a little short on the sleeves and torso for me, Im 5'11.
I would have loved to have a neck protector for the zipper (becareful not to zip your neck when you go to zip up your jacket!
The features on the jacket are snap buttons and both the buttons and the zipper are good quality.
I give it 4 stars because the zipper is very stiff and requires 2 hands to unzip, so as a biker I have to stop to unzip when I start to get too warm. Also the jacket is small in the breast area and big in the stomach area, giving that pregnant look when your bent over your bike cycling. BTW the black is more of a very dark heathered grey.
Over all Im happy with it though. Hope this helps!

Pearl iZUMi Men's P.R.O. Softshell Tight Review

Pearl iZUMi Men's P.R.O. Softshell Tight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love the Pearl Izumi P.R.O. series of clothes. I'm finding it hard to wear my older bike shorts now so I was excited to see these tights and bought a pair. My normal Showers Pass commuting tights do a great job but they're not exactly form fitting. These tights fit and feel great. The major problem I have with them is they don't protect from rain well. My maiden voyage in them included a medium heavy rain (not midwest sky opening flash flood type but a constant NorthWest rain). I was dry for about the first 25 minutes when the rain was more of a shower but as soon as it picked up, my knees became damp, then just downright wet. I got home in about 40 minutes so if I was out there longer, I suspect it the water would have made it's way downhill to my shoes. I was hoping for more. The literature mentions perhaps something short of a rain dedicated tight but it's for riding in the elements so I interpret that as mostly cold and wet. I expected a little more in this area.
I'd recommend wearing them in fairly cold weather. I'm too hot in them below 40f. There isn't much ventilation to speak of either.
The rain part is kind of a fatal flaw but many rainy days don't include heavy enough rain to keep me from wearing these. They breathe well. My legs never felt sweaty which is a big problem with many of the cold weather items. Still though, I'll continue to use my Showers Pass tights.
Pros:
Great Fit
Comfortable
Breathable
Cons:
Limited rain protection
Expensive

This is an excellent versatile jacket for cycling, hiking, travel, or just wearing it around. It will keep the wind out up to around 35 mph. It also has two interior pockets. The green is not as bright coloured as it appears here. It is a slightly loose fit. So wearing a sweater or jerseys underneath should be no problem.
