(More customer reviews)I've used this bike rack for over 10,000 miles across the U.S., on two sedans and one SUV. It's always been secure and rock solid (tried only one bike) at every speed I've driven, ranging from highways to gravel roads in all weather. It is an effective bike carrier and I do recommend it. There are some minor pitfalls though.
The mounting is tricky, with any car. It took me 40 minutes the first time, now I can do it in 15, ensuring everything's good. The documentation isn't terribly clear either because the actual mounting is a nonlinear process. You'll need to factor the rack mounting into your "getting ready" time. Tying up excess length on the straps is troublesome; you'll probably be rolling them up and taping them together. So you'll need tape with this rack. Last, its two screwknobs are easily lost and the product could have well been designed with a better mechanism for adjusting the rack to fit other cars. These are minor though, and the rack does carry a bike quite well.
Things to note about trunk racks in general:
They're easy theft targets; at the end of the day, the canvas straps can be cut and the whole assembly stolen. This is acceptable for driving and stopping along an interstate, but not for sitting in the Ikea lot all day. Mounting the rack also renders the trunk inaccessible, entailing some foresight when loading the car for a multi-stop trip.

Thule Parkway Hitch Bike Carrier - 4 Bike Review

(More customer reviews)Have had my rack 6 months. It is reasonably well made and sturdy. Bikes go on easily. The rubber frame holders work well with my hardtail bikes. A couple of bungees or the included strap should keep your bikes from swinging; you don't need the struts or fancy clamps.
Two problems: first, the locking-bolt hole for the 1-1/2 inch bar is too close to the end, causing the bar not to fit all the way into the receiver (poor design) and making the rack stick out at least 3 inches farther than it should on my car (Subaru Forester). Why not have two holes, like my old Saris rack? I had a machinist drill and tap another hole in the correct position. The Thule customer service (joke!) people would never admit this design flaw, although their website addresses it.
Second, to fold or unfold the crossbars (that the bikes go on), you have to remove/replace a bolt with a nylock nut, requiring 2 wrenches. This should be a tool-free affair with a carriage bolt and a big wingnut.

Thule Criterium Bike Mount Review

(More customer reviews)I wanted a rack that could directly mount to my Toyota Sienna (2003) and my RAV4 (2006) factory racks- the large clamps on this unit allows for this and provide a solid, stable mount without additional hardware. I also wanted something that didn't require the removal of the front wheel, and this also fit the bill. I was a little skeptical at first because the main mount seems a bit flimsy, but when you lock it down, it works and my bikes remain motionless, even with my bikes which are all 61cm road bikes. The Thule locks are easy to install and provide a small level of protection for when you really need to leave your bike- as with any of the bike rack locks, I wouldn't leave an expensive bike unattended for too long because the locks probably wouldn't slow down a bike thief too much.
I'd definitely recommend these to anyone looking for a rack, especially for those with factory racks with crossbars that this unit will fit. It will save you about $300 in additional hardware.

(More customer reviews)I have owned this rack for 5 years and it is without doubt the strongest, most reliable and durable product I have ever used. Too bad the photo is the 2 bike version with the 1 and 1/4" hitch. It really doesn't do this rack justice.
I have the 2" - 5 bike version and I can honestly attest to carrying 5 bikes on it without any problems. If you have a womans bike with the low swooping step through bars, you WILL need the Saris top bar adapter. Get over it! There is no way to make it work without it. This is not a design flaw there is no way to accomadate these kind of bikes!
I have a carbon fiber road bike and it gently keeps it in place and with the 3rd vertical tie down it keeps all bikes from swinging. I have taken all of my friends and their bikes to various road rides and carried them trouble free and rock solid. I have 4 grandkids with bikes and carry them equally as well.
If you have a large group of bikes to carry......BUY THIS RACK! period. You won't be disappointed. The only con that I have with it is I had to buy a seperate anti rattle device so when the bikes were on the rack it would not wobble from side to side. Obviously a 2" receiver and a 2" rack are going to be slightly different sizes so they fit into one another. (See photos).
After that it is rock solid with up to 150 pounds of bikes. I leave it on all summer and only take it off to go through car washes. I bought a 15' security strap with a stainless steel master lock and attach it to the rack and hitch for use when I leave the bikes unattended....dinner/shopping and any other pit stops.
I am sure that the smaller versions of this rack are just as nice so don't hesitate to buy whichever one fits your needs. It may not be the prettiest rack around, but it does what it is supposed to do flawlessly. There is something to be said for things that work as advertised.

(More customer reviews)This bike rack works well once it is mounted. The description of the item did not mention that it needed to be mounted on the Thule roof rack adapter. I ordered only the bike rack. I hoped that the rack would mount directly to my Toyota Rav4's factory roof rack. I've since been looking at other factory roof racks, and have noticed that most of them have airplane wing-like bars which go from side to side. These bars are about three inches in width, and the hardware on the Big Mouth Bike Rack is set up to fit the Thule adapter, which has bars little more than an inch in width. Instead of ordering the adapter, I spent a day tooling my own mounting hardware. This gives the bike rack a much cleaner look, and sets the rack and bike closer to the roof, making it easier to load and unload. The second problem is that the end caps come off much too easily. Other than these problems, the rack works well, and is easy to load and unload.

Saris T-RAX Basic 2 Bike Hitch Mount Rack Review

(More customer reviews)Just got this rack at LBS on sale for $125. I got the 212 which is the 1-1/4" supplied version. Basically the same as the 222 without the 2" hitch gizmo. All the 200 series have 1-1/4" frames. I have a 2" receiver on my trailblazer, so went to harbor freight and bought a 2" - 1-1/4" adapter ($9.99), then to home depot for a 1/2" X 3" bolt ($0.70) to replace the hitch bolt that comes with it (I was afraid I wouldn't have enough thread on the supplied bolt to engage the nut inside the rack tube). Drilled a 7/32" hole in the end of the bolt for the cotter pin, but will be putting a small masterlock in there for security.
I'm carrying (2) 700C hybrids on this puppy and she's solid as a rock. With a little ingenuity, I now have a formidable rack for under $150.00 that includes anti-sway.
