Ironmaster Quick Lock Dumbell 120 lb Add on Kit Review

I was surprised to read that anyone would give this system a single star, but then again a customer should consider what kind of work out program they want start prior to buying any weight set. I bought this system because I wanted to build dumbells that were between 125-135 pounds, and I needed a system that was safe to "drop" when my set was complete. You can't build dumbells this heavy with other brands, and you certainly can't drop weights made by Bowflex or other companies that produce simular products quick change products. These weights are high quality. I have used them for the last year and have had no problems. If you want a system simuliar to what you would find in a professional gym this is it. In addition, I had no problems with their customer service.

Ironmaster Super Bench & Dumbbell Combo Review

Ironmaster Super Bench and Dumbbell Combo

Got 1000 bucks to spend on a home gym? What might you want to buy? That was my dilemma when I got an overseas assignment in a remote area, and knew I wouldn't see a decent gym for months on end. So, I bought two alternatives--an Ironmaster weights, bench, and accessories, and a Bowflex Ultimate.
After a year's use, I have a clear favorite--the Ironmaster. Now, the Bowflex claims that you can do some 100+ gym-quality exercises with it. You can do 100+ exercises, but they are far from gym quality. Hey, you can do 100+ exercises with two bags of rocks and a little creativity. The Bowflex took a LONG time to put together, and frankly, all of those exercises aren't so great. I max out the Bowflex on some exercises, and I'm no gym dude--just a 50-yr old in respectable shape. And the Bowflex has variable resistance with those bows, meaning you aren't getting resistance where you need it on a lot of exercises. Finally, you don't need 100+ exercises. The fact is, when you come right down to it, there are probably about 15 exercises that will take care of your whole body.
Now, the Ironmaster. First, the free weights. I've used other adjustable free-weights, and none are as secure or as fast to change out as the Ironmaster. And, you can step it up 2-1/2 lbs at a go--not so necessary for me, but great for my wife. One fast change-out trick when stepping up the weights--rather than adding equally on both sides, just add an additional weight to ONE side of the dumbbell. This takes half the time. By shifting your hand slightly off-center on the crossbar, it will still feel balanced.
The bench--superb quality. Quickly adjusts to various inclines, from perpendicular to flat and plenty in between. Necessary accessories for a full range of exercises--definitely, the leg extension curl and crunch sit-up attachments. Both are durable and comfortable, and let you focus on your workout. I also got the curl bar and the preacher curl pad--all for under $1000 (you might find some specials if you go to the Ironmaster website).
Nothing puts on muscle faster than free weights, true. But this is not just for putting on the meat. If I'm not feeling like a full workout, I'll just go through a few reps to flex the muscles, even in front of the TV. It's a lot better than couch-potato-ing it, and leaves me refreshed. There are also a lot of exercises you can do without the Ironmaster--lunges, squats, all kinds of stretches, toe raises (with or without weights)--to supplement the Ironmaster, so that your body gets a thorough workout, without a houseful of equipment.
Conclusion: gives a great essential workout, saves time and money when compared to going to the gym, and a lot more convenient. Going to last a long, long time. For your money, this might be unbeatable.

PowerBlock Elite 90 Adjustable 5 to 90-Pounds per Dumbbell Set Review

PowerBlock Elite 90 Adjustable 5 to 90-Pounds per Dumbbell Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After years of collecting the old standard hex dumbells, and trying to maintain a home gym in the city in various apartments (usually in the common basement) I found the PowerBlock dumbells. For someone without a dedicated room (with lots of space) for their workout equipment, these are fantastic dumbells. They go up to 85 or 90lbs without the add-on kit, and they are super fast and easy to change the weight. They are pricey, but considering the amount of dumbells they replace, well worth it, for the right user.
After using the PowerBlock setup for a couple years I came across IronMaster, another brand with adjustable dumbells. They go to 75lbs without the add-on kit, and cost a little less than the PowerBlock dumbells. I have BOTH in my home gym now, and I will go over the pros and cons of each for those of you trying to decide on a set up like this.
PowerBlocks:
Pros: Well made, comfortable grip, fast and easy to change the weight in 10lb increments, nice stand included, made in USA, ability to go up to 85-90lbs as is, and 120lbs with add-on. Excellent for exercises where you change weight quickly or frequently. Square dumbells don't roll.
Cons: Funky design with 4 pillars around your hand/wrist. It works, but it makes me nervous at higher weights that if I were to drop them I could somehow catch my wrist in there and hurt myself. Difficult to quickly switch weights in increments smaller than 10lbs. This is a problem for many exercises. Although they are sturdy, and have never given out on me, they rattle and the plates move a little when you use them. Again, they seem sturdy but when doing shoulder or bench press it's a little disconcerting. You need to make sure the magnetic pins are fully inserted and in the right spot or disaster could ensue. The dumbells get long when using a lot of weight which can be somewhat awkward for certain exercises.
Overall: These dumbells are best for exercises where you change the weight frequently, or quickly, and work best for non-press exercises in my experience. The add-on kit is a nice option, but the dumbells are already pretty long at 85-90lbs, so it may be impractical for a lot of exercises. They were the first of their kind, they are still a serious contender in this ring.
IronMaster:
Pros: Well Made. More traditional looking & feeling dumbells. Up to 75lbs as is, and 125lbs with kit. Not as long as PowerBlocks, no awkward pillars to stick your hand in between. Nice stand included. Great bench and other accessories available (better than PowerBlock bench after using both). No rattling or moving of plates when in use. Sturdy and well balanced and made in USA. Excellent for press exercises. Just as quick to change the weight in 2.5lb or 5lb increments as it is by 10lbs or more.
Cons: Takes significantly longer to change the weight than PowerBlocks. For press exercises I find this to be less of an issue, but for curls and other quick change exercises it's a bit of a pain. No locking mechanism for the screw in pins. This has never been an issue, or caused a dumbell to fall apart during use, but there's no locking mechanism (or magnet such as PowerBlocks) just friction preventing the pin from unscrewing. I'm not too worried about it, but it has crossed my mind.
Overall: These dumbells are best for users who use higher weights for press exercises and want the traditional look and feel of a dumbell you might find in the gym. They don't rattle or move, and are very solid. They also go higher in weight than the PowerBlocks with the add-on kit, and cost less. Not as good for users using ligher weight and requiring quick changes.
Conclusion: For me, having both pairs is a pretty good set up, but If I were to choose just one, I would stick with the IronMaster. I like them for their sturdiness and lack of rattling especially when using heavy weight. In addition to the IronMaster, I would buy a cheaper set of adjustable dumbells with a lower maximum weight (50lbs maybe) that could be easily adjusted in 5lb (or smaller) increments to use for curls and kickbacks etc...and stick with the IronMaster for the heavier weights, where I really don't mind the extra minute of rest to change the weight! In fact, I think I will sell my PowerBlocks and get a set up like this, and have some money left over for Muscle Milk! :)
P.S. the IronMaster adjustable bench is the BEST I have used!

The only dumbbell system that can expand to meet your strength needs, PowerBlock dumbbells are the most versatile and effective exercise tool ever developed for strength training. PowerBlocks work intuitively. Rather than requiring you to buy a room full of dumbbells, PowerBlocks act just like a weight stack at the gym, with a handle that fits inside the first weight, which fits inside the second, which fits inside the third, etc. When you want to change weights, you simply move the weight selector pin into the appropriate slot and you're set. As you lift the core, all the weights above the selector pin are lifted at the same time, turning your 5-pound dumbbell into a 10-pound dumbbell, or your 10-pound dumbbell into a 20-pound dumbbell. Not only is the system remarkably easy to use, but it's also cost- and space-efficient, as a single pair of dumbbells can do the work of dozens.
This Elite 90 set adjusts from 5 to 90 pounds in 5-pound increments, in effect doing the job of 28 pairs of traditional dumbbells. In essence, you'll be storing 2,565 pounds of free weights while taking up the space of just one dumbbell air (each 90-pound dumbbell is only 16 inches in length). And if that's not enough for your workouts, you can expand the set to 130 pounds per hand using the 8-11 Elite Big Block kit. Boasting black powder-coated weight plates in a traditional square shape, the free weights are ideal whether you're trying to build muscle mass, firm and tone your physique, or get rid of unwanted body fat. The Elite 90 dumbbells measure 16 by 6 by 6 inches (W x H x D) each and carry a 10-year limited warranty.

I just received these adjustable dumbbells and I could not be happier. I've been looking to buy a pair for a few months but could not bring myself to spend 400.00 to 600.00 for dumbbells no matter what the brand name was. Well the LifeSmart pair came in and they are great. Sure there is some plastic were a stronger material might work better that explains my 4 stars instead of 5. But I used them right away and if you treat them with care they should last for a long time. I had no problems adjusting the weight or using the dumbbells for triceps brain smashing reps. Brains still in tact. The 2.5 pound plates make the set great for a small woman like my love and a big guy like myself. Oh and did I mention I live in Hawaii and Amazon shipped them to me for free...gotta love that!

PowerBlock Classic Adjustable Dumbbell Set Review

PowerBlock Classic Adjustable Dumbbell Set

I purchased the PowerBlock dumbbells after returning the SelectTech dumbbells. The SelectTechs are cumbersome, the weight plates feel loose, and you have to dial two dials to select one weight. Furthermore, they are over $100 more expensive than the PowerBlocks.
On the plus side for the PowerBlocks:
1) They take up very little space for an adjustable dumbbell
2) They feel solid
3) While not cheap, they are much cheaper than the SelectTech dumbbells
4) You can do over the head tricep extensions using both weights or one using the handles on the bottom
5) Selecting the weights is a one step process for each weight
6) They are upgradable with a heavier handle option and a barbell option
On the minus side:
1) Alligning the pins to select the weight is a bit more difficult with the weights on the ground. The stand or a table top would alleviate this problem.
Overall, I'm pleased with the PowerBlocks and definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a quality, adjustable weight dumbbell.

PowerBlock Personal Trainer Adjustable 2.5 to 50-Pounds per Dumbbell Set Review

PowerBlock Personal Trainer Adjustable 2.5 to 50-Pounds per Dumbbell Set
Average Reviews:

I agree that these are the best adjustable dumbbells on the market. However, I would add a few caveats. For starters, it is important to have the PowerBlocks on a level surface and make sure you insert the pin straight across rather than at an angle. If you don't, it is possible that a plate could fall and hit you even with the elastic backup mechanism. It is also very important to put the pin assembly together right side up. If you don't, the magnets that hold this assembly in place don't engage.
On exercises like OVERHEAD triceps extensions, the points above are particularly important. While I think this product is great, it does limit range of motion in some exercises such as upright rows. The dumbbell is rather long and this could be a problem depending upon your frame. However, I wouldn't worry about the square design. I find using these dumbbells to be quite comfortable and the padded grips certainly help.
While this product is quite expensive, it's also the best out there that I know of and I shopped around carefully. It also seems to be the safest and is certainly more convenient, takes up less room and even costs less than a set of full dumbbells that can cover the same weight ranges.
If money is an issue for you, you may want to consider getting the model of dumbbells one tier down from these that adjust in 5 lb. increments and then purchasing adjustable wrist weights in 0.5 increments. This will give you about the same effect for less cost.

I was happy with my dumbbells until one of the selector pin plastic pieces broke. Dumbells have 90 day warranty after that you have to buy replacement parts. You must contact ICON the manufacture of the product for parts. The plastic selector is part of the handle part # 274214 ($102 + ship). They will not sell the part separate. The plastic selector by itself should only cost a couple dollars. Without the selector the dumbbell is worthless. I have called and emailed ICON multiple times just trying to get someone at ICON to see how ridiculous this is with no luck. Save your money buy something else.

I am a high school baseball coach and I have purchased 3 types of adjustable dumbells. After trying all 3 I have to say that these are the better of the 3. Reasons being is because they are easy to adjust the weights as opposed to the turn/click adjustable dumbells and they are better because the weights are strongly assembled as opposed to adjustable dumbells that use a plastic based material to hold the weights together.
Lastly, the price is right.

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'd like to start this review with a disclaimer. This is coming from someone who is mid P90X and has made great progress. I built up from regular screw on dumbbells to these. I'm not a body builder and I'm a beginner.
I originally looked at a few different weight sets. While looking I considered the following factors: Durability, convenience, versatility and space saving.
The majority of this weight set is made out of metal, mostly the important parts: the weights and weight adjustment part. The handle is a durable solid plastic and the other plastic parts are mostly just for show. Overall this weight set is durable and sturdy. This is a primary reason I selected this set, it seems like it'd be able to stand the test of time.
Convenience: The weight set comes with it's own cradle. The cradle is just plastic, but it works. The real nice part is the easy adjustment. It's just a quick turn of a handle and slide to the weight you want and slide back. Super simple. Doing P90X I need to go sometimes from 20's to 50's then back to 20's quickly. Simple place it on the cradle, move the slide and off you go. Great feature.
Versatility: Here is unfortunately where it comes up a little short. The max weight for each dumbbell is 50 LBS and it only moves in 10 LBS increments. So making the jump from 20's to 30's can be really rough, if it had 5 LBS adjustments instead of 10's it'd be better for lifting, but you can just simply add more reps until you're ready for the 10 so overall it's not a bad deal.
Space saving: As mentioned above I needed 3 adjustable sets and they still couldn't do all the weights this one could. I'd need a ton of space if I were to use traditional hex weights or even adjustables. Great feature.
Now with all the great things being said, time to move into my biggest complaint.
Although the design is neat looking, they are a bit bulky. The one issue comes is sometimes I must adjust my body positioning as not to hit myself with the weights as they are extremely wide (in order to fit up all the adjusted weights. When you compare it to a dumbbell loaded with 50 LBS though, the bulk isn't too much more. Overall, while it sometimes gets in the way it's still a great set.
Final recommendation: I would highly recommend this weight set over the higher priced and less durable Bowflex. I haven't tried others but I've read enough about bowflex to know they're build not to last. These weights are a good set. They are worth the money!
Update: 1/8/11: The weights are still going strong with no signs of slowing down. I use them three times a week for about an hour, so they get plenty of wear and tear.

This adjustable dumbbell set fell apart the very first time I used it. I set the weight to 20lb for each dumbbell to get ready for a set of military press. I lifted the weight to my shoulders and then up for the first rep. The internal mechanism snapped while the weights were over my head. Fortunately I was not harmed. The weight missed my head and feet and slammed to the floor. There is minimalStamina 50-Pound Versa-Bell II Adjustable Dumbbell Pair damage done to my wood floor and the crashing sound sure did startle the heck out of me, that was the extent of the damage. I called Amazon, they were very helpful - I will receive a full refund plus a gift card for my trouble. Stamina (the company that makes this product) has proven to be very difficult to deal with. I called several times to report this issue. The customer service representative seemed annoyed with me. The manager was also supposed to get back to me but has neglected to do so thus far. I checked the BBB; there are multiple similar complaints with the company's products and their lack of professionalism and follow through in regards to dealing with unhappy customers. I certainly do understand looking for a bargain, especially during these trying times. For safety's sake I would invest in a better quality product. Good luck.

Do away with your space-consuming dumbbells and consolidate to a single pair with the Stamina Versa-Bell II adjustable dumbbells. Offering a series of weight settings from 10 to 50 pounds (in 5-pound increments), the Versa-Bell II units do the work of nine sets of dumbbells in one, so you don't need to dedicate more than a few feet of space to your workout area. Each innovative Versa-Bell II dumbbell is outfitted with a single 10-pound handle connected to a dial mechanism. As you move the dial, the handle latches on to a different combination of steel weight plates, with a window display showing which weight setting you've chosen. Dial it down to 20 pounds and you'll lift only a single set of plates, but dial it up to 50 pounds and you'll get the whole combination. PowerBlock SportBlock 24 Adjustable 3 to 24-Pounds per Dumbbell Set Review

Average Reviews:

I wish I could give stars in halves; this product would get a solid 4.5 from me. Rounding up to a 5 would mean folks who aren't taking the time to read the review might assume that there's really no room for improvement, but there is.
After reading this review you might think I work for Powerblock or something, but I don't. When you're spending between $150-400 on a set of "high performance" adjustable dumbbells, applying a bit of logic can go a long way for your satisfaction and safety.***AREAS THAT COULD USE IMPROVEMENT***
To help counteract the perceived bias I might have, I'm gonna try something different; I'm going to start with the CONS of the Powerblocks.
1. The magnets in the selector pin could be stronger. As a safety measure, there are magnets in the pin that hold it against the bars on the side of the weight stack, reducing the chance of it slipping out during an exercise. This makes a lot of sense, but the magnets are pretty weak. During some pretty basic exercises the magnets will come lose and lose their hold. Now don't get freaked out -- it's not like the pin flies out and it's scary to work out (there is an elastic band acting as a backup safety also). I'm talking like millimeters here; I can see that the pin has moved just enough where you can tell the magnets aren't holding. Rather than a whole bunch of cheap magnets within the pin, two small high-quality earth magnets would give a better hold while still being pretty easy to remove.
2. The weight selection process can be a bit finicky on carpet or non-flat surfaces. Because there may be a bit of shift in the weight stack on carpet, sometimes it's tricky to stick the weight pin in correctly. I recommend leaving these weights on a hard surface while in use, or better yet get the sport tray/stand to accompany them.
3. The pin can be put in crooked across two different weights. If you're not paying attention (and you should be!), it's somewhat easy to put the pin in crooked so that it crosses two weights. You will probably notice this right away when you go to pick up the weight, and it's not that big of deal since the pin still holds onto the heavier weight, but possibly re-engineering the pin shape or something could help prevent this entirely.****POWERBLOCK VS. THE COMPETITION****
Okay, now here's the part where you assume I work for Powerblock. Let me say that this set of dumbbells (and the Powerblock line in general) is a MUCH better choice than the SelectTechs (STs). While comparing these 24-pounders to the 52 pound SelectTech's isn't really fair simply for weight comparison reasons, I wanted to point out why I think this line is vastly superior:
1. The Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells (I'll call them STs) are the same width whether you pick up 5 pounds or 52.5 pounds. And by the way, they are WIDE -- about 16" each. Imagine doing curls with 5 pounds per hand and needing THIRTY TWO INCHES across to do it -- makes for an uncomfortable curl, especially for narrower people. The Powerblocks (PBs), on the other hand, are narrower and more compact the less weight you add. All the stuff you don't need is left on the floor, not in your hand.
2. The STs require you to turn TWO dials to appropriate number on each dumbbell. There are 15 different weight settings on the STs, so what if your next weight is on the opposite side of the dial? That's right, it will require EIGHT CLICKS PER SIDE OF EACH DUMBBELL to pick up the new weight. That means it takes between 4 (minimum) and 32 (maximum) clicks of the dial to change weights each time. And you can't just flick the dials, either. The PBs, on the other hand, require two moves no matter what weight you're selecting: pull the pin out, put the pin in. Period.
3. The STs, while far "cooler" looking, have a lot of plastic on them. Pick a set up at your local Sports Authority and see if you can tell how the weigh selector mechanism works. Then, consider how durable (and potentially unsafe) you think your $400 weights would be if you dropped them. The PBs are mostly metal, with the inner handle being the only thing that contains plastic, and it's not cheapo plastic either. If you drop them, I'm guessing they'd hold up fine, although I wouldn't recommend it.
4. With the STs you HAVE to have the base to set the handles back into due to the design of the product. If you didn't have a tray to hold all the weights that were left behind, it'd be a nightmare to put the handles back together and try and switch to another weight. In fact, I'd like to see someone try =) The PBs are self-contained, so they work fine without the stand. The weights that you don't pick up stay in a compact stack that won't move.********CONCLUSION AND SUMMARY********
Aside from those gripes, I really enjoyed these Powerblocks. In fact, I grew out of them and traded up to the Sport 9.0 model (which I will review separately). If 24 pounds per arm is enough for your routine, it's an absolute no-brainer to pick these guys up. Note that Amazon has built in the shipping cost to the price of these dumbbells.
PROS
+ Much more compact than the competition
+ Quick weight changes to ANY weight
+ Well built/durable
+ Great price on the lower weight set (if 24 is all you need)
CONS
- Magnets in pin could be stronger
- Doesn't work quite as well on carpet
- Possible to put the pin in crooked if you're not paying attention

The only dumbbell system that can expand to meet your strength needs, PowerBlock dumbbells are the most versatile and effective exercise tool ever developed for strength training. PowerBlocks work intuitively. Rather than requiring you to buy a room full of dumbbells, PowerBlocks act just like a weight stack at the gym, with a weight handle that fits inside the first weight, which fits inside the second, which fits inside the third, etc. When you want to change weights, you simply move the weight selector pin into the appropriate slot and you're set. As you lift the core, all the weights above the selector pin are lifted at the same time, turning your 3-pound dumbbell into a 6-pound dumbbell, or your 6-pound dumbbell into a 12-pound dumbbell. Not only is the system remarkably easy to use, but it's also cost- and space-efficient, as a single pair of dumbbells can do the work of dozens.
This pair of SportBlock 24x3 dumbbells, for instance, adjusts from 3 to 24 pounds in 3-pound increments (3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, and 24 pounds), in effect doing the job of 16 individual weights. Even better, the weights are more compact and balanced than traditional dumbbells, with a padded handle that protects people with weak wrists. Best of all, the free weights are terrific whether you're trying to build muscle mass, firm and tone your physique, or get rid of unwanted body fat. The SportBlock set offers a maximum weight of 24 pounds per hand and carries a limited 10-year warranty.

The bar weighs one pound. You can add one half pound on each end to have a two pound weight, and then go up 2 pounds at a time. The weights are rubber coated so they will not damage floors. And you can get them in some really cool colors!!

XMARK (Two) 25lb. Adjustable Weight Dumbbells XM-3305 Review

Overall, I am very happy with these dumbbells. The design is good, I have no problem adjusting weight settings and can't foresee the weight changing pin failing any time soon. I also really like the esthetics of these, they are just cool to look at. I have large hands and the handles are comfortable for me. The only critique I have is if you look closely at the plates the finish could be a little better. I'm also a little worried they may begin to rust someday. I've only had them a few weeks and so far so good

These dumbells are certainly not the best quality but they get the job done. Initially, it is kindda hard to change the weights. I also could not use one of the plates that came with the product but the customer service is pretty responsive and they mailed me a new plate real fast.
Overall, just an OK product. You get what you pay for holds true in this case.
