Polar S625X Heart Rate Monitor Watch Review

Polar S625X Heart Rate Monitor Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I LOVE my Polar S625X Heart Rate Monitor... and I'm VERY picky about the design and implementation of techno gadgets. There are only three things I've thought of that it could do better.
First, the temperature sensor is on the wrist side of the watch. So, when I was running and the air temperature was about 16 degrees fahrenheit, the sensor reported 65 degrees. Since I know of no good reason for this design decision, I have to call this a silly and unfortunate design error.
Second, the accelerometor could probably very easily provide a pedometer reading, i.e., "How many steps did that run require?" It doesn't... at least as far as I can tell.
Third, the menu system appears to be inaccessible during a recording session. That is, you have to stop the recording session to look at or change file information or user information, etc.
But, other than these 3 things, I'm very impressed. (I'd be very very impressed if the pedometer and menu shortcomings mentioned above could be fixed via an EPROM upgrade via the Infra Red port.)
The Polar S625X Heart Rate Monitor is a complex tool. Plan on spending between 4 and 6 hours of concentrated study to learn to use it to its full capability.
And finally, I'd like to add that PC Coach/Biometrics, Inc. shipped on time and provided EXCELLENT technical support when I asked them questions about this HRM. I highly recommend them.
20080608 Update:
The original battery is still working! That's about 3.5 years of regular usage 2 to 5 times per week!! I'll soon have to replace it. But I'm very happy with the S625X's battery life.
There is one thing I hope the folks at Polar will do for me, however. Wouldn't it be cool if Polar would make a bathroom scale that would interface via wireless to the S625X so that the watch could gather my weight and body mass index info, too?!! ;-)

The Polar S625X provides runners, triathletes, and coaches with a complete tool to measure performance and workout intensity. With the optional cycling and power sensors and enhanced training tools like the Polar OwnOptimizer recovery test, plus altitude and ascent for route profile, the S625X lets you cross train and put the power of information to work for you. It includes the S1 foot pod, a shoe-mounted sensor that continually relays computed velocity and distance information to a specially-adapted, wristwatch-based display. You'll be able to get data on total speed and distance, speed displayed in pace or kmph/mph as well as a distance-based interval timer.
It comes with the S625X wrist receiver, a transmitter that's worn comfortably around your chest, and an elastic strap to hold the transmitter in place. The wristwatch-like receiver features a large display that includes 12/24-hour time of day, alarm, and stopwatch. It provides readings of maximum heart rate of total exercise, average/maximum heart rate of each lap, recovery measurement (by either heart rate divided or time), and interval timers.
You can also better assess your training data using the included Polar Precision Performance (PPP) 4.0 software when you transfer data from the monitor to the PC via a wireless infrared (IR) connection. This feature requires a PC with an IR window or you will need a separate Polar IR interface.
The OwnCal feature shows your energy expenditure during one exercise session as well as your accumulated kilocalories during several exercise sessions. It also allows you to set daily and weekly exercise goals in terms of calorie expenditure. The OwnIndex feature will determine your fitness level, track your improvements, and provide motivation. Polar's OwnCode technology blocks unwanted signals from other heart rate monitors, ensuring disturbance-free transmission of your heart rate data.
The S625X's visual and audible alarms alert you when you reach your target heart rate zone. The Time in Target Zone feature calculates the percentage of maximum heart rate or beats per minute in your personal target zone. You can use this feature together with the Total Exercise Time to determine the effectiveness of your exercise program.
Feature Detail:
Displays your heart rate as beats per minute and percentage of maximum heart rate, average heart rate, and exercise duration
S1 foot pod shoe-mounted sensor that continually relays computed velocity and distance information to monitor
Runners' data including total speed and distance, speed displayed in pace or kmph/mph
Wirelessly sends exercise data to PC via infrared connection

Great Product. I have been using it for about a month now, It gives more information then I expected. First time setup takes a few minutes reading the manual and a calibration ride, But after that you pretty much just ride and have fun. Customer service from the manufacture is great.

Polar FT80G1 Heart Rate Monitor Watch with GPS- Size XXXL Chest Transmitter 42-62 Inches Review

I can't believe how stupid i was to purchase the Polar FT80 without researching any reviews of this product. Now that i've learned my lesson thanks to Amazon, no more purchases without first checking Amazon reviews.
My previous Polar HR monitor was an Accurex. I had this for nearly 20 years and it was flawless, but is not Mac compatible and finally the serial port transmitter stopped working. Time for a new unit! The Polar marketing literature on the FT80 makes it look so cool and functional. But the FT80 is really another story.
The display is extremely difficult to read, and in fact impossible to read in many lighting conditions. It is a low contrast negative display and it does not have a "brightness" adjustment. Can you believe it!?! Who would design such a thing. So you are screwed if you want to brighten up the very dim dingy yellow green graphics (that's right, they are not white as every picture would indicate!!!) Every picture i have seen of the FT80 marketing literature, and from Polars web site, shows this unit as bright white numbers and graphics. Nothing could be further from the truth! The display can't be read UNLESS you are in a very well lit room or sunlight.
AND then in well lit rooms or sunlight, you have to contend with the immense glare from the face of the polished plate glass. Really, you are screwed in either direction.
When I called Polar to ask if there was a way to adjust the brightness, the rep was curt and said the information was on their web site. To her defense, she must be very tired of handling they myriad of calls each day of complaints about this product display.
Then a few calls later, i finally received the instructions to enter into the diagnostic mode. Believe me when i say the keypress sequence is so tricky, that you will literally have to try over and over for an hour to get the "timing" of it just right so that you can even enter into the diagnostic mode...but a little determination you will succeed. I digress!
In the diagnostic mode you can adjust the LCD contrast. All this does is change the BLACK background to less black. This does nothing for the already near impossible to read display and actually makes it more difficult to read. After talking to Polar again, i learn that the factory has optimized the display settings before they send it to you. The moral of this frustrating experience is "don't waste your time trying to adjust the contrast as it will only frustrate you more".
What Polar forgot to design in was a "brightness" control. What really upsets me is Polar's marketing literature which has obviously "tweaked the product photos of the display" to indicate a beautiful bright white graphic display. Anybody ever hear of truth in advertising? BUYER BEWARE. Polar's direct sales are final sales and can not be returned. Although, I will try as the advertising pictures and literature is dishonest!
I rely on Polars superior product performance. Imagine your on a run and trying to stay within various HR limits, and then the HR data goes all screwy and chaotic - loosing transmission, then wrong HR, then settling down back to what you would expect. How could the transmitter be all screwed up in the FT80 - but apparently it is.
The G1 - can't begin to describe how disappointed I am in this performance or difficulty of use to get even a signal. It's not what you would expect in a GPS so please research the features carefully before you purchase the G1. It appears to my shock to only provide "average" speed and distance...huh? There does not appear to be any mapping, or terrain, or area covered with the details of routes and speed, no way points - nothing!
The "user" manual that comes with the FT80 is hardly "useful" and not worth the paper its printed on. It's very sparse on the exact steps and explanations of features. There are so many features of the FT80 and website interaction that are not documented, that it will leave you researching and making calls for days on end until you get it figured out.
I still believe in Polars superior products overall, but the FT80 is a waste of money and time.
Sadly, the unit is near un-useable due to the display alone, not to mention the erratic behavior and poor GPS integration -- anybody want to purchase my "new" FT80G1? Its your for a song!

If there's one word to describe people who train seriously for athletics, it's dedication. And if there's one heart rate monitor that's dedicated to helping you achieve maximum workout efficiency, it's the Polar FT80G1. Having been a Garmin 205 user, then 305, then moving to this, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. You can use it out of the box, but you should read the manual, it's worth the effort to learn about the cool features. Being able to take it in the water and having a 20 hour battery life made it worth it to me, but when I figured out that I could use it to guide my way back to where I started when I was on a long bike ride... now that was awesome.
As a nice plus it was able to use the heart rate monitor that came with my 305.

Polar RS800 Heart Rate Monitor Watch Review

Polar RS800 Heart Rate Monitor Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used Polar Heart rate monitors for years and, having become interested in tracking heart rate variability choose to purchase the RS800 so that I could do the analysis.
I'd note that I had the same problem as the other reviewer with Watchsavings, who did not include the IR interface (they claim that Amazon mis-listed the product).
While the watch has excellent features and an easy interface, there's a major problem: the infrared transmission system (used to transfer the data into the computer software) crapped out after 3 weeks and completely stopped working.
Looking over the web, this is not an isolated incident. People are reporting that they get data off the watch for a day or two, a week or two, one friend I have who bought one never go a single piece of data off his watch. I contacted a local running store and their employee told me that she had an identical problem, the watch stopped transferring data after 2 weeks. Polar kept telling her that the problem was on her end until she returned it for a refund.
Polar refuses to address this, they ignore it in their forums and will not answer emails.
This is unacceptable, the features of the watch (namely the heart rate variability) are contingent on getting the data transferred to the computer. That Polar refuses to admit or deal with the problem only makes it worse.
Given that other products can readily make a physical USB interface work, there's no reason for Polar to have gone this route and used a technology that is clearly faulty. This is one top of the fact that Polar decided to use a non-standard USB driver for Windows.
I have since replaced the Polar with the SuuntoT6 which went with a physical (clip) USB interface. While their software is not as good as Polar's at least I can get the data off of the watch.
I will NEVER purchase another Polar product.

Designed for elite-level training, the Polar RS800 wrist heart rate monitor a complete system for planning, monitoring and analyzing your training. It includes the comfortable textile Polar WearLink W.I.N.D. transmitter with 2.4 GHz disturbance-free transmission from all other electronic devices. It comes with Polar's ProTrainer 5 software--the most advanced and dynamic training, planning and analyzing software on the market. Easily prepare a detailed training program and transfer your daily training plan to the RS800 via a wireless infrared connection. It also features a built-in altimeter for recording altitude and ascent for route profile and total meters climbed.
And when used in conjunction with the optionally available Polar S3 Stride Sensor, you'll receive highly consistent and accurate speed/pace, distance and cadence data via its nano technology. It incorporates Polar's W.I.N.D. technology, offers water resistance and a user replaceable battery, and is fully compatible with the Adidas AdiStar Fusion running shoe.
Heart rate monitoring includes maximum heart rate (fitness test-based and age-based), maximum/average of total exercise and of each lap (up to 99 laps), three target zones, and audible alarms. It also offers such timing features as time of day (12/24-hour display), dual time zone, day and date display, stopwatch, and alarm with snooze. It also includes the following exclusive Polar features:
Polar Sport Zones: Polar sport zones provides an easy way to select and monitor the intensity of your training and to follow Polar's sport zones based training programs. The training is divided into five zones based on percentages of your maximum heart rate: very light (50-60%HRmax), light (60-70% HRmax), moderate (70-80%HRmax), hard (80-90% HRmax) and maximum (90-100% HRmax).
Polar OwnCal: This feature shows your energy expenditure during one exercise session as well as your accumulated kilocalories during several exercise sessions. You can set daily and weekly exercise goals in terms of calorie expenditure with the OwnCal feature. Because the OwnCal tracks both the energy expenditure during one exercise session and the accumulated kilocalories during a longer time e.g. one week, it helps in achieving both short term and long term goals.
Polar OwnZone: This feature guides you through an appropriate warm-up routine and automatically determines a safe and effective exercise heart rate zone--your OwnZone--while taking into account your current physical condition.
R-R Intervals / Online HR Variability: Measures heart beat intervals and reflects autonomic nervous system in heartbeat regulation. The R-R interval measurement is most useful at rest and at low intensities. Relaxation rate indicates the state of your physical recovery.

Manufacturer's Warranty The original purchaser of this heart rate monitor is backed by a limited warranty that states that this product that the product will be free from defects in material or workmanship for two years from the date of purchase.

Polar FT60G1 Women's Heart Rate Monitor Watch with G1 GPS Sensor (Black) Review

Polar FT60G1 Women's Heart Rate Monitor Watch with G1 GPS Sensor (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I loved this product at first. I researched it well and knew exactly what I was getting. I compared the Garmin to this one and they are not meant for the same purposes. I have bad asthma and was training for a half marathon. I wanted to be able to go out my door and run in any direction and know how far I went. The Garmin is great if you want to track your routes, upload the data and don't mind something bulky on your wrist. This watch has a more comfortable chest strap that you can put in a washing machine and clean. The "OwnZones" checks your heart rate before exercising and judges your heart rate zones based on how cardio tired. This helps prevent over training.
The training program allows you to set goals (weight loss, improving fitness, or maximizing fitness) and creates a program to fit your needs. This does not mean it says bike this long, run this long, etc. Instead it gives you a weeks worth of timing in each heart rate zone that you should do to meet those goals. Doesn't matter what activities you do. There are no special bike attachments or anything.
I took my watch with GPS out a couple times with my bike and bike computer. The distances on the bike computer and the watch were only 0.1 miles different from each other. This is similar to what friends get with their Garmin. However, I live in a desert and don't have a lot of trees to contend with.
Pro's:
Easy to pack in suitcase to take on travel
Comfortable chest strap (even for women)
Chest strap machine washable and recommend to be washed every 5 workouts.
You can change all the batteries yourself
Since the battery isn't rechargeable, you can wear the watch anywhere.
Attractive watch to wear around
Good accuracy on the GPS
Training program helps you avoid over training
Con's
Doesn't have a spit timer.
Have to buy the foot-pod separately for track workouts
Have to buy the data link if you want to upload to computer directly
Data link only works on MAC's with Intel processor (or any PC)
Doesn't allow for you to map the route you did
The reason I said at first that I loved the watch at first is because I seem to have gotten a watch with a glitch. However, when I called customer service I got a person right away that was friendly and willing to help. They helped me reset the watch and tried it again. The problem happened again so I have sent it to Polar under warranty for repair/replacement.

The smartest way to better fitness, the Polar FT60G1 women's heart rate monitor watch helps you stay motivated and improve your conditioning. The FT60G1--which comes with a G1 GPS sensor that measures your speed and distance during outdoor sports--works by first checking your daily condition, and then guiding you to the ideal training intensity for your age and fitness level. Knowing your heart rate not only helps you reach your personal fitness goal, but also improves your physical condition in general, as it's vitally important to train at the appropriate intensity level. If you exercise too hard, you may quit before you reach the real benefit, but if you work out too leisurely, you'll struggle to lose weight at all. The FT60G1 helps overcome these problems by encouraging you to map out a complete fitness routine.
The FT60G1 is packed with innovative training features to help you toward your exercise goals. First off, the watch includes a Polar Star personalized training program that adapts to your workout habits. By giving you weekly training targets and providing constant feedback, the watch guides you without being too strict, helping you reach your goals more efficiently. The watch also displays heart rate info in several ways, including as a percentage of your maximum heart rate, as beats per minute, and within a graphical target zone indicator. And should your heart rate exceed or dip below your target zone, the FT60G1 will sound an alarm that helps you return to form.
Users will also love the variety of proprietary Polar functions, including ZonePointer, Polar OwnZone, and Polar OwnCal modes. The ZonePointer is an audible and visual feature on the display of your FT60G1 that shows you where your current heart rate sits within your target heart rate zone. The Polar OwnZone mode, meanwhile, provides a customized target zone for individual exercise sessions. Finally, the Polar OwnCal mode shows your energy expenditure during one exercise session, as well as your accumulated kilocalories during several exercise sessions. You can also set daily and weekly exercise goals in terms of calorie expenditure, helping you achieve both short-term and long-term goals.
It's the G1 GPS sensor that really helps the FT60G1 stand out in a crowd, however. The sensor, which includes a SIRF-III chipset, not only makes it easy to measure your speed and distance, but also offers support for the WAAS system, thereby improving position accuracy to within 3 meters. The shock-resistant G1 runs for up to 10 hours with a pair of AA batteries, or up to 30 hours with an optional lithium battery.
Other watch features include a built-in fitness test that measures your aerobic fitness at rest in just five minutes; a ZoneLock mode that lets you activate a target zone in the midst of training with the press of a button; an OwnCode mode that prevents crosstalk from other heart rate monitors nearby; a recording mode that tracks your average and maximum heart rate, calorie expenditure, distance, and total exercise time, and then puts it in an exercise file (with 100 total files); water resistance to 30 meters; a 12/24-hour clock with a day/week indicator; a built-in backlight; an alarm with a snooze; a low battery indicator; and a Polar FlowLink connection for transferring data between the FT60G1 and a computer. Sporting an attractive black housing, the watch carries a two-year warranty.
Manufacturer's Warranty The original purchaser of this heart rate monitor is backed by a limited warranty that states that this product that the product will be free from defects in material or workmanship for two years from the date of purchase.

I was somewhat disheartened by the two earlier reviews, sounds like the first person didn't even have one but felt compelled to share I guess . . . I purchased one anyway and have been using it for a few weeks. My first run with it was the Country Music Marathon in Nashville. 26.08 miles was the final reading. Not too bad for right out of the box. Pace did seem to jump around but I have changed the record rate to 3 seconds and it seemed to fix the problem. I wore the receiver on the back of my shorts (where I usually wear my ipod) - probably not the best location and maybe why the marathon distance was off, but I haven't got around to trying the arm band yet. The receiver is only slightly bulkier than my Nano, not really noticeable when clipped to shorts. Takes 20-40 seconds to lock.
I had an rs200 that really worked well so I was familiar with the menu structure. It does take a while to get used to but with all of the display and measurement options, I was able to find a setup that gives me exactly what I am looking for. I was using the web based software for recording my data from the rs 200 and haven't used the PC based software that came with this new watch yet. Too bad Polar doesn't support Mac . . . The WIND heart rate strap is coded so it doesn't interfere with other monitors but as mentioned before, it doesn't work with most gym equipment either but you can still just wear the watch to check your HR. I am thinking about getting the footpod for gym workouts. Once every other day or so, I will accidentally hit the start button but I always hear the beep and turn it off. Has a function where you can identify the shoe (up to 3) you are running in that day - great if you alternate between shoes and want to track mileage on each.
All in all a good system. I wear the watch daily - it's not nearly as large as the Garmin 405 (the other option I considered). I would have gone with the Garmin if it was able to be worn as a regular watch and you didn't have to recharge the battery periodically. 4 stars for lack of Mac support.
Hope this helps.

Boost your training regimen with Polar's RS800G3 multisport training system, the most comprehensive planning and analysis tool for athletes who train across multiple _disciplines. The RS800G3 bundle includes a wristwatch, a heart rate transmitter, a software CD, and a GPS sensor, and is ideal for multisport athletes who want the ability to track speed and distance measurements in a variety of active pursuits, such as running, cycling, hiking, kayaking, cross-country skiing, and inline skating. By employing the RS800G3's integrated information setup, athletes can plan their routines, measure their bodies' response, and analyze their performance against personal goals. And because the RS800G3 provides the data that helps athletes avoid over- and under-training, users can train in the most efficient manner possible to achieve peak performance and fitness.
Although all of the items are important, it's the wristwatch that acts as the heart of the system, with such features as a highly accurate wireless heart rate gauge, a built-in fitness test, an interval trainer, a host of calculating options (including average and maximum heart rate, altitude and ascent details, and a countdown timer), and the ability to record 99 exercise files. In effect, the watch serves as a digital personal trainer, helping guide an athlete through detailed workouts of his or her own design.
When combined with the G3 GPS sensor, however, the system is even more robust. Incorporating the SiRFstarIII chipset, the G3 GPS sensor talks wirelessly to the RS800 watch to let athletes easily measure speed and distance for a variety of outdoor sports. The G3 GPS sensor is also water-resistant and weighs only 80 grams, making it tough and light enough to withstand training in the harshest of conditions. Simply strap the GPS sensor to your arm, a belt, or the top of a backpack and you're set.
Finally, Polar's ProTrainer 5 software--a Windows-based application for training planning and analysis--lets athletes and coaches easily create and share specific training plans and analyze recorded data. Users simply transfer the data between the computer and the wristwatch via a wireless infrared signal. The software can upload as many as 21 planned training sessions to the wristwatch, along with insightful graphs to track performance.

Polar Cs500 Cycling Computer Review

Polar Cs500 Cycling Computer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this as a replacement for a Polar CS200cad, which I've used for many years, but it has a tendency to break the mounting pegs on the back of the unit, or the twist-on/twist-off mount breaks after repeated use. I have sent at least two CS200 units to Polar and had the back covers replaced so I coudl get new mounting pegs, but I lost one CS200 when it fell off my bike going fast down a bumpy road during a ride. I thought I'd try the new CS500.
Good points:
(1) Much more secure bike mount. The unit mounts securely and won't release unless a push mechanism is used.
(2) Much larger screen than CS200, so easy to see what you need at a glance.
(3) Easier to cycle through menus - the unit itself is pressed on either side to go forward and back through menus.
(4) Compatible with w.i.n.d. power meters and other w.i.n.d. devices (i.e.. just Polar as far as I know)
(5) Records altitude and temperature.
Not so good points:
(1) Signficantly more expensive than CS200cad, so if you don't use a power meter, it may not make sense.
(2) Not compatible with Polar's non-w.i.n.d. sending units (such as those on CS200), which means I had to swap out my old Polar speed sending unit and install the w.i.n.d. compatable speed sensor.
(3) If you use a polar watch when you ride, like the F11 I use, the chest strap for the CS500 won't work with it.
(4) You have to buy the cadence sending unit if you want to measure cadence.
(5) You have to buy the seperate w.i.n.d. power senor unit if you want to measure power.
(6) Not compatable with ANT+ power meters (e.g. PowerTap Wireless, Quarq Cinqo and SRM, or it would seem the majority of power meters).
(7) You have to buy a seperate infrared USB device to easily transfer data to you computer. I did not transfer data from the CS200, but typically wore the Polar F11 watch to transfer workout data through my computer's microphone and manually added speed, distance and cadence from teh CS200. Since the CS500 heart rate strap is not compatible with the F11, I'll need to try another approach.

Are you serious about your athletic training? If so, turn to the Polar RS800CX Bike heart rate monitor watch, which offers a complete system for planning, monitoring, and analyzing every part of your training. This particular version of the RS800CX is equipped with a host of valuable tools, including a built-in altimeter, a WearLink W.I.N.D. heart rate transmitter with a soft textile chest strap, a copy of Polar ProTrainer 5 software, and a CS W.I.N.D. speed sensor designed to help you improve your cycling workouts. As a result, there's no better way for cyclists to create a comprehensive training workout that's efficient and effective. Even better, the watch lets you combine training sessions from different sports into a single file, so you can integrate your cycling workouts with separate running, hiking, and skiing sessions without missing a beat. It's the ultimate multi-sport training watch.
As a heart rate monitor, the RS800CX works by first checking your daily condition, and then guiding you to the ideal training intensity for your age and fitness level. The RS800CX helps overcome these problems by encouraging you to map out a complete fitness routine. The watch also displays heart rate info in several ways, including as a percentage of your maximum heart rate, as beats per minute, and within a graphical target zone indicator. And should your heart rate exceed or dip below your target zone, the RS800CX will sound an alarm that helps you return to form.
The RS800CX also offers a variety of proprietary Polar functions. The ZonePointer, for example, is an audible and visual feature on the display of your watch that shows you where your current heart rate sits within your target heart rate zone. Other proprietary Polar functions include a Polar fitness test that measures your aerobic fitness at rest in just five minutes; a ZoneLock button that activates a target zone alarm while exercising; and an OwnOptimizer mode designed to keep you from undertraining or overtraining--a must when trying to improve overall performance.
Serious athletes will appreciate in the built-in altimeter, which measures your altitude, cumulative ascent, and cumulative descent. It's the Polar ProTrainer 5 software, however, that really helps the watch stand out. You can use the Polar ProTrainer 5 to plan your workout in advance--including creating maps and routes in conjunction with the G3 GPS sensor (sold separately)--and then transfer the settings to the RS800CX watch. Then, after training, you can analyze the results using versatile, customizable graphs to ensure a deeper understanding of your speed, exertion level, and distance. The software also includes a custom calendar that functions as a complete training log. Each time you transfer an exercise file to the program, the calendar automatically creates a diary entry with all your training data--a terrific option for athletes who want to monitor their workouts over the long term. The software even lets you export your GPS mapping routes to Google Earth, so you can view your exact training route or calculate mileage on the spot.
This version of the RS800CX comes with Polar's CS Speed Sensor W.I.N.D., a wireless bike-mounted sensor that helps you evaluate and analyze your cycling performance. In competition cycling, time is of the essence--you simply can't afford to fall too far behind the pack whether on the open road or in the velodrome. Thanks to the lightweight, aerodynamic CS sensor, however, you can take note of your current, average, and maximum speed readings throughout your training rides, so that you can get it right once the big race arrives. The CS communicates this speed data directly to the RS800CX, which analyzes the data in a variety of ways so that you can hone your long-term performance. The RS800CX also supports other optional W.I.N.D. sensors (sold separately) that are custom built for various training needs. The S3 Stride Sensor, for example, measures every stride you take while running, helping you perform better in competitive situations, while the aforementioned G3 GPS sensor accurately tracks your movement during less-traveled sports, such as canoeing, mountain biking, rowing, or Nordic skiing. With the purchase of all three W.I.N.D. sensors, your RS800CX will become an extremely versatile multi-sport training computer.
Other watch features include several recording options to help track your heart rate, calorie expenditure, distance, and more and save it in an exercise file (with 99 total files); water resistance to 50 meters; a Polar WebLink connection for transferring exercise data from your wrist unit to a computer; a 12/24-hour clock with a day/week indicator; a built-in backlight; an alarm with a snooze; and a low battery indicator. Sporting an attractive silver housing, the watch carries a two-year warranty.
Manufacturer's Warranty The original purchaser of this heart rate monitor is backed by a limited warranty that states that this product that the product will be free from defects in material or workmanship for two years from the date of purchase.

Polar FT80G1 Black Heart Rate Monitor Watch with G1 GPS Sensor Review

Polar FT80G1 Black Heart Rate Monitor Watch with G1 GPS Sensor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all, I wish that I had seen a review like this before I bought mine, but as I am the first. I am so disappointed in this watch. What is wrong with it?
1. The display is so dim and it cannot be adjusted. I was certain that the watch was faulty, I contacted the vendor and they sent me a replacement, and that was the same. It is almost impossible to read the menu indoors, outdoors it is a lot better, but still very difficult. When I looked on the Polar website discussion area I noticed a lot of people saying the same thing. How I wish that I could have found this earlier.
2. The GPS seemed not to work, I had to spend hours trying to figure out why not and by chance I found that the GPS (G1) had to be set to mode 2; absolutely no mention of this anywhere. In fact for a high price and supposedly highly functional watch the manual is not worth the paper it comes on.
3. The GPS is very basic, I could not find this out before, but it only measures the speed (at the moment) and distance travelled. It has no waypoints, no coordinates, no software to display routes or maps, etc. OK, I know this is not supposed to be a navigation device, but this information could be obtained with a foot pod at far less expense and no need for a GPS. The Garmins and Timex all have this.
On the positive side, it is a good looking watch, but not much use if you cannot read the display.
I have returned mine now to Trinowfittness - who by the way are very good. I am looking at replacing with a Polar RS800CX or a Garmin of some description.
In summary, don't get this watch if you use it in a gym, don't get it with the GPS option if you only want to keep track on how far you have run. If they fix the display it might have some other useful features. The picture used on the Polar web site shows the display as much brighter than the actual watch itself.
Good luck.

If there's one word to describe people who train seriously for athletics, it's dedication. And if there's one heart rate monitor that's dedicated to helping you achieve maximum workout efficiency, it's the Polar FT80G1. The FT80G1--which comes with a G1 GPS sensor that measures your speed and distance during outdoor sports--starts by checking your daily condition, and then guiding you to the ideal training intensity for your age and fitness level. The FT80G1 helps overcome these problems by encouraging you to map out a complete fitness routine.
The FT80G1's intelligent training computer also helps you work toward achieving your exercise goals in other ways. For example, the watch offers a Polar Star personalized training program that adapts to your workout habits. By giving you weekly training targets and providing constant feedback, the watch guides you without being too strict, helping you reach your goals more efficiently. The watch also displays heart rate info in several ways, including as a percentage of your maximum heart rate, as beats per minute, and within a graphical target zone indicator. And should your heart rate exceed or dip below your target zone, the FT80 will sound an alarm that helps you return to form.
Users will also love the variety of proprietary Polar functions, including ZonePointer, Polar Strength Training, and Polar OwnCal modes. The ZonePointer is an audible and visual feature on the display of your FT80G1 that shows you where your current heart rate sits within your target heart rate zone. The Polar Strength Training mode, meanwhile, helps you optimize your strength training by reading your heart rate and informing you when your body is ready for the next set--an ideal way to optimize your weight training. Finally, the Polar OwnCal mode shows your energy expenditure during one exercise session, as well as your accumulated kilocalories during several exercise sessions. You can also set daily and weekly exercise goals in terms of calorie expenditure, helping you achieve both short-term and long-term goals.
It's the G1 GPS sensor that really helps the FT80G1 stand out in a crowd, however.
Other watch features include a built-in fitness test that measures your aerobic fitness at rest in just five minutes; a ZoneLock mode that lets you activate a target zone in the midst of training with the press of a button; a Polar OwnZone mode that provides a customized target zone for individual exercise sessions; an OwnCode mode that prevents crosstalk from other heart rate monitors nearby; a recording mode that tracks your average and maximum heart rate, calorie expenditure, distance, and total exercise time, and then puts it in an exercise file (with 100 total files); water resistance to 50 meters; a 12/24-hour clock with a day/week indicator; a built-in backlight; an alarm with a snooze; a low battery indicator; and a Polar FlowLink connection for transferring data between the FT80G1 and a computer. The watch carries a two-year warranty.
Manufacturer's Warranty The original purchaser of this heart rate monitor is backed by a limited warranty that states that this product that the product will be free from defects in material or workmanship for two years from the date of purchase.

Polar CS600 Cycling Computer Review

Polar CS600 Cycling Computer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had a few cycling computers in the past that were decent for giving me the basics (speed and distance), then moved to a Polar CS200 as my cycling advanced so that I could add heart rate and cadence to the mix. About 6 months later, I wanted to add power output to the mix. Daunted by the really high price of a PowerTap or it's ilk (not to mention the hassle and expense of re-doing the hub in my rear wheel), I opted to move up to the CS600 so I could "have it all". I've been very happy with the results. I have found that I have all the reliability of the CS200 for heart rate, distance and cadence, and have also added the altimeter, which processes the information to give me the grade of the hills I ride plus the advantage of my power output with the upgrade kit for the CS600.
The power sensor, which incorporates the cadence pick-up is a minimal hassle to set-up, but much less of a hassle than replacing the rear hub (such as with other popular power meters)--and you can install it at home pretty easily. All that is necessary is to place a pick-up on the rear derailler (by replacing a screw in one of the jockey wheels) and to place zip-ties to hold the rest of it in place. There is a little fidgeting to adjust the pick-ups--then you're done. Another really good improvement from Polar is the digital W.I.N.D. wireless transmission. This allows the sensors to be a greater distance from the computer (rather than the prior limited 40cm distance) and no interference from other wireless cycling computers that may be nearby on a group ride. That means more reliable transmission--and also the flexibility to place the speed pick-up on the rear wheel (which I have done).
It is necessary to calibrate this unit for chain weight (a chart with standard weights for popular chains is provided in the instructions), however knowing your actualy chain weight will improve precision. Your local bike shop or the box the chain came in should be able to provide more accurate information. Also, for greater precision, as with all cycling computers, taking a standard measure of rolling tire circumference (in mm) is necessary to calibrate the computer. Once this is done, you're all set to ride!
The data from this computer seems to be quite reproducible. I cannot vouch as to whether the watt output is exactly precise if compared with a "gold standard", but it provides good consistency so you can easily compare one work-out to another and track your progress.
The included software is pretty easy to use and offers really good tracking of progress over time as well as a very good graphical display of each workout, including all the parameters you're set-up to use. (Even if you choose this unit without the power-output, it will still record and display everything else, including speed, heart rate, cadence, distance, duration of the workout, altitude and even temperature. With the power pick-up, the watts are recorded as well.) The software allows you to do a very detailed analysis of each work-out that is easy to follow. You can see how many watts you pulled and what your heart rate was when you were really gutting it out on that steep hill--and it will also calculate the grade to see just how steep that hill was. Another really appreciated feature is that this program and data are on *your* computer, not stored on Polar's website--although you may upload it to their site if you wish. That means you are not subject to having to bow to Polar's website changes or accessibility to access and analyze your workouts.
The one real dissapointment is that although the computer analysis is great and really makes this a powerful tool, Polar chose not to include an IRDA (infra-red) port reader with this cycling computer. The CS600 transmits its data to your home computer through an IRDA port, so it is necessary to purchase this as well if you don't already have one on your computer--and you don't discover until after you've opened the box. If you don't have an IRDA port, you can't access the data from the CS600, so the IRDA port is a critical component to access the value of this cycling computer. Polar should have either chosen to include that port with the CS600 or more clearly stated that it is necessary if you don't have an IRDA port already on your computer.
All in all, I'm very happy with this unit. So much so, in fact, that when I had lost this unit at one point, I ordered a replacement one so I could continue using its features. This is my best recommendation for it--not only *would* I buy it again, I *did*!

Designed for demanding cyclists, the Polar CS600 cycling computer enables you to track the most important data from your training rides with wireless sensors. The CS600 incorporates a comprehensive feature set combining measurements for time, speed, distance, altitude, and incline as well as cadence (with optional sensor). You can prepare a detailed training program with the included Polar ProTrainer 5 software (for Windows). It can also be used with the optional Polar Power Sensor W.I.N.D. wireless transmitter, which offers 2.4 GHz disturbance-free transmission and an aerodynamic design (another version of the CS600 includes the W.I.N.D. transmitter). Features include:

Polar W.I.N.D transmission technology (compatible, not included): 2.4 GHz coded transmission for disturbance-free connections from wireless speed, cadence and power sensors and WearLink heart rate transmitter.
Large customizable display showing four separate elements of information. Two timeline trend graphs can be displayed simultaneously providing "at-a-glance" feedback during exercise.
Smooth and aerodynamic case design made from tough reinforced polycarbonates for maximum durability.
Polar OwnIndex Fitness Test calculates aerobic fitness (comparable to maximal oxygen uptake, VO2max) providing a reference to base training intensity and measure improvement.
Target heart rate zones with visual and audible alarms (three each)
Graphical comparison of heart rate and speed
Heart rate measurements: maximum of total and each lap, average of total
Automatic lap recording (up to 99 laps) with exercise date
Exercise file info page with date and time
Semi-automatic backlighting
Water resistance to 10 meters (protects against rain and splashes)
Polar OwnOptimizer: Shows the status of training load to help you find the perfect balance between training and recovery.
Cycling Efficiency Index: Improvement in cycling efficiency (your energy expenditure converted into the power that propels the bike forward) indicates improved economy of cycling performance.
Incline Measurement: Provides uphill or downhill steepness in percentages and grades calculated from altimeter data. Numerical information helps you to track your cycling effort accordingly.
SpeedPointer: Points out the difference between average speed/pace and actual speed/pace on the display by up/down arrows.
Estimated Time of Arrival: Set the distance you are going to ride, and your cycling computer calculates the estimated time of arrival based on your cycling speed.
Polar OwnCal: Shows your energy expenditure during one exercise session as well as your accumulated kilocalories during several exercise sessions. Because the OwnCal tracks both the energy expenditure during one exercise session and the accumulated kilocalories during a longer time e.g. one week, it helps in achieving both short term and long term goals.
Cycling Economy/Intensity: Enables you to foresee your calorie expenditure and secure sufficient intake on a long ride. This feature is also useful for comparing and analyzing the loads of various training types.

Provide good info on the spot (I also have cadence speed and GPS) and fabulous info via software on computer. Unit is easy to use (sometimes inadvertent starting of recording occurs - when red button accidently hit). Just replaced battery 11 months after purchase. Replace transmitter batteries every few weeks (am recording HR every second). Transmitter strap is comfortable - you can use electrode pads if you wish - with press stud fitting. The computer software free with unit (also inc infra red usb dongle) is a breeze to use and provides a very useful picture of past efforts. A tad expensive as compared with other units hence 4 stars rather than 5... however it is an extremely useful tool regardless of the cost.

Polar RS800CX Run Heart Rate Monitor Watch with S3 Stride Sensor W.I.N.D. Review

Polar RS800CX Run Heart Rate Monitor Watch with S3 Stride Sensor W.I.N.D.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned a couple of Polar HRMs over time and I like this one the best. The watch itself is very nice. I have small wrists and this one fits my wrist nicely and the strap length is better than in the past. The band to hold the excess strap has a bump in it to keep it on the tail end of the strap. It comes with an extension strap for giant arms or over a coat. The buttons and thier function are pretty much the same as my previous Polar instruments. The display has changed although navigating the menus is in the same style. The top of the display is a matrix of dots so images and text can be displayed. This makes the menus easier to get through for me. When in monitor mode there are configurable screens that can be set up with the software the way you like. The functionality/options are pretty much the same as my prior watch s625x. The battery on this watch is easily changeable. Prior versions required skill and patience to change the battery as the entire guts of the watch had to be dissassembled - this new approach is a welcome change.
The stride sensor: the things I was interested in are: cadence (steps per minute for one foot), speed, distance. One has to calibrate the sensor. The watch allows for three calibrations for three pairs of shoes. As with any sensor like this the calibration needs to be done at the speed you use it most for acuracy there. If you calibrate it running it will be off when walking. I'm kind of a data nut so I look at this a bunch and it stays accurate for me at my usual pace. The S3 stride sensor has no switch and the battery is now a coin cell. This is nice to me. Its also smaller than the previous sensor.
The GPS .Polar G3 GPS Speed and Distance Sensor Set , an additional option, is more of a fun option for running and I'll use it this winter cross country skiing. The watch will use both the stride sensor and the GPS at the same time. This is something only the cx version has. If the stride sensor is on (you have to turn it on) the speed, distance, and cadence are all used from it and the GPS data is simply a record of where you went. When using the ProTrainer software you can look at your route in Google earth or a .gpx file viewer - I use Garmin's MapSource. The watch marks a waypoint when laps are set. I've used this to double check distances. I will be running in a city with lots of buildings in the near future so I'll see how well the GPS records there.
The unit does come with the polar usb irda port in the box which I find works well on my Windows XP laptop (Dell). Nothing I could find indicated it was in the box.
The software is very similar to the prior versions to me. The one thing that is a bit wacky is the way the watch settings load. I have an email in to Polar about this. I find I have to be careful when updating the settings via the irda interface as all the settings from the watch are not always loaded when the watch data is read. When you write any of the settings they all get written so this can erase or change settings. So, I have to check all the screens and make sure my data is the way I like before hitting save. I hope this gets fixed. The other wacky thing is the mileage in the exercise dialog is not the same as the recorded mileage from a run. In my software it is always a few miles higher. I just type in the real mileage. Have an email in on this as well.
Overall I really like this Polar watch. I give it four stars because of the bugs in the software

Are you serious about your athletic training? If so, turn to the Polar RS800CX Run heart rate monitor watch, which offers a complete system for planning, monitoring, and analyzing every part of your training. This particular version of the RS800CX is equipped with a host of valuable tools, including a built-in altimeter, a WearLink W.I.N.D. heart rate transmitter with a soft textile chest strap, a copy of Polar ProTrainer 5 software, and an S3 Stride Sensor W.I.N.D. designed to help you improve your running technique. As a result, there's no better way for runners to create a comprehensive training workout that's efficient and effective. Even better, the watch lets you combine training sessions from different sports into a single file, so you can integrate your running workouts with separate cycling, hiking, and skiing sessions without missing a beat. It's the ultimate multi-sport training watch.
As a heart rate monitor, the RS800CX works by first checking your daily condition, and then guiding you to the ideal training intensity for your age and fitness level.
This version of the RS800CX comes with Polar's S3 Stride Sensor W.I.N.D., a compact transmitter that mounts to training shoelaces or inside a specially designed mid-sole cavity in adidas adiFusion MC and adiStar Fusion running shoes. The S3 Stride Sensor does more than just measure speed and distance, but also provides insight into the stride itself. By measuring each stride you take, the sensor can help you perform better in competitive situations, where shorter and faster strides can have a dramatic impact on your overall performance. The S3 communicates this stride data directly to the RS800CX, which analyzes the data in a variety of ways. The RS800CX also supports other optional W.I.N.D. sensors (sold separately) that are custom built for various training needs. The CS Speed Sensor pod, for example, accurately measures your cycling speed and distance, while the aforementioned G3 GPS sensor accurately tracks your movement during less-traveled sports, such as canoeing, mountain biking, rowing, or Nordic skiing.

Just got my Edge 800 a couple of weeks ago, and until now I'm pretty satisfied, all though there are some small annoying things and that's why I only rate it 3 stars, but that might not influence your product.
1. I have had 3 freezes so far and that's a little to much within the short time I've had it, so I have had to reboot it.
2. The mount is not fit for my MTB, it simply doesn't work well with the handlebar and NOT at all on the stem, so if you have a short stem, be prepared, it might not mount at all.
3. You might need to turn up for the background light to see your data while biking.
About the mount, I did have a Edge 705 the mount for that fitted fine for my MTB with short stem, so I figured this one would as well. I asked Garmin about it and the only answer they could come up with was: "You may be able to purchase larger bands for the mount"... Dah, what does that help, well I figured that's a typical Garmin answer, so what I did was to cut some rubber from a used inner tube tied it with a ziplock and put the Edge 800 mount on top of that... So now I can use it, but are not proud of my setup :-)
Coming down to the digital part, it's great, just notice that the screen is not at all crystal clear and sharp, but it's working ok, the touchscreen is easy to use and does work with biking gloves.
The setup possibilities are great, you can tune it almost 100% into the computer and info you want in front of you, and that's some great features.
I use it for intervals, and setting that up is a little time consuming, but the workout you have when you are done is perfect and 100% yours, the little "info" beep is not loud enough, so I overhear it and mess up my interval, but I guess I need to make more attention, the Edge 705 was way LOUDER.
I'll post an image of my homemade MTB mount.

Polar RS800CX Heart Rate Monitor Watch Review

Polar RS800CX Heart Rate Monitor Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Polar RS800CX is my fifth or sixth Polar HRM. I have slowly worked my way up to what I consider to be Polar's best offering. The features available on this unit are absolutely splendid. Every exercise creates a new digital object that one can study to chart one's progress but you can also just gather them as digital remembrances. I can pin point the moment in time when I injured my IT band, the time of the run when my heart rate raced to 194 (against my "theoretical" limit of 170) and the Iyengar yoga class when it sank to 26.
My biggest gripe about all Polar products is the awkwardness of the documentation they provide. All the statements are grammatically correct and all the information is there somewhere but it is organized in an odd manner and I find myself wrestling with "them" to find answers to obvious questions. To unlock all the features, you need to have the units themselves, a computer to get on the web, the paper documentation the unit shipped with, the on line documentation for the Polar ProTrainer software and then you need Google to find the needle in the haystack.
The RS800CX reigns supreme within the Polar family. It is the only unit that can sample, record and export your heart rate, as a time series, at a user selectable sampling frequency, down to once every second. It is currently the only unit that can measure Heart Rate Variation (HRV). HRV provides a measure of your state of relaxation. More precisely, HRV measures how well your parasympathetic nervous system is asserting itself over the sympathetic nervous system. The larger the HRV the greater the degree of relaxation.
The practices of Yoga (asanas, pranayama and meditation) activate parasympathetic influences while activities like running activate the sympathetic nervous system. The beauty of the RS800CX unit is that it actually allows you to track the HRV of different practices. It can measure not only how hard you are exerting but also how deeply you are relaxing. The calories you burn in most styles of Yoga barely rises above the base metabolic rate. But the outlook changes when you look at HRV. When I am running at say 8.1 MPH my HRV is down to 2.1 ms and when I let myself into and hold a posture, like trikonasana, for an extended period of time, in an Iyengar Yoga session, I have seen numbers as high as 90 ms. The RS800CX manual is mostly silent on the value of this feature. I actually track the effect of different styles of Yoga by looking at the HRV they induce in me. I can even tell which teacher, studio and style is right for me! For example, last week during a 90 minute Iyengar Yoga session I expended 167 cal, and ran up a HRV standard deviation of 147, the next day during a 90 minute Ashtanga Yoga session I expended 275 cal and logged HRV standard deviation of 107. Most of us need to burn plenty of calories and also learn to let up and relax. Nearly everyone knows how to burn calories but how does one actively relax. Now you can plan and track relaxation quantitatively. I hear many Ashtanga practitioners say that Iyengar doesn't work for them because they "don't break a sweat" or "nothing is moving". If only they had a RS800CX on they could see the difference in real time!
If you take the trouble to traverse through a somewhat non-intuitive sequence you can get the RS800CX to display any of two dozen measures it tracks in real time right on your watch dial. The hoops to jump through to do this require that you first fire up the Polar ProTrainer application and link your watch to your computer. On most laptops with built in IR ports, this requires that you use one hand to position the watch correctly, so that it can link up with the IR port. With the other hand you must bring up the "Edit Polar Product Setting" menu, and let it sync up. Once it has synced up you can drop the watch and click on the "Product" tab of a menu screen that pops up after the syncing. On the screen that comes up you see a button labeled "Customize Display Sets" which you click on and then a panel pops up drop with this smorgasbord menu of 23 different real time readouts organized around four or five display panels that get activated depending on what accessories you have associated with the RS800CX. So there is more confusion here. If you don't have the cadence or speed sensors accessories, the settings under those tabs will not register on the the wrist unit. Once you make your choices, hold up the watch again to the IR port and click on the sync icon to download to the watch and you are all set.
My last RS800SD died recently- the screen went blank afte about six months. The retailer gave me a full refund and so I bought myself a new RS800CX. Others have said this before, but the RS800CX is significantly better than the RS800sd even though they share accessories. I am surprised they continue to sell the RS800sd. You have to wade through some additional confusion when you try to figure out which RS800CX to get. The main point to remember is that the wrist unit is RS800CX and common to all the bundles that currently exist. You can attach stride sensors, bike sensors or GPS sensors at any point in time to obtain the additional capabilities. If you run on a treadmill a GPS sensor will do you no good, you need the S3, if you bike you need the cadence and speed sensors for bikes. These are little devices that physically attach to your bicycle frame and crank. They will do you no good if you are trying to log data from elliptical machines and stationary bikes in gyms. If you do your panting outdoors or practice multiple activities you likely want the GPS unit to track the route and speed. If you want all three, make sure you are not duplicating accessories by buying packages.
My transition from the RS800sd to the RS800CX took a few hours of persistence. But for the markings the two look identical but work quire differently! I finally managed to figure out how to get an old S3 stride sensor to transmit stride length and cadence data to my RS800CX unit. I was trying to get the old S3 to work with the new RS800CX and although I could easily get the RS800CX to learn the S3 sensor, the cadence and stride length data were not getting transmitted to the RS800CX.
The trick was to (1) Hit the red START button to go into the exercise mode the unit starts to search for the heart rate data then (2) hold down the the upper left "LIGHT" button to bring up a new SETTINGS menu that lists the shoe sensor that had previously been learned by the RS800CX. You can now activate it. When this has been correctly done r1 (or r2 or r3) displays next to where the heart rate normally shows (bottom right of display). r for run even though these features are sometimes grouped under shoes. Once done, the RS800CX seems to remember the association. It was quite frustrating to not find a way to complete this association through the settings menu that one steps through by hitting the up/down buttons. The manual does explain it but this critical feature is awkwardly placed behind a button labeled "LIGHT".
Even though the Polar manuals aggravate me, this unit has changed my attitude towards exercise and wellness by bringing a level of rigor and accuracy that is very addictive. I have spent over a thousand dollars so far buying their stuff and I think it is one of the best investments I have ever made in my health.
