All-in-one Stand Alone Pull up Bar Review

All-in-one Stand Alone Pull up Bar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was skeptical that this bar would be sturdy enough to support my 200lbs without a lot of flexing. I was pleasantly surprised. Assembly was quick and easy. I expect to get years of service out of this piece.
If I had one wish it would be for the front and rear of the base to be connected. I pull the bar away from the wall when I want to use it and always have to realign it to get everything parallel. Two small connector pieces would solve this. I will eventually fabricate something for myself. Another alternative would be to put some kind of rubber foot on the bottom.
Second wish might be to offer an extension kit for taller people. I'm 6'4" and while it's certainly tall enough to use comfortably, I would prefer to have another foot of height.

This portable pull up bar is perfect for people who don't want a big bulky "tower" that you can't move. You can assemble and disassemble the product in a minute (no tools required). It comes in 7 pieces (all under 45" in length) and fits in a 48"x8"x8" box. This product is also a "transformer". In its "normal" configuration, it is 7 feet tall, and the top bar lets you do pull ups, chin ups, and "neutral-grip" pull ups. You can adjust the height in 4" increments. In its "dipping" configuration, you take off the top half, so that the top bar is 3.5 feet high, allowing you to do dips, inclined pull ups, and and inclined push ups. Again, you can adjust the height in 4" increments. The construction is rock-solid, hand-welded by guys who make trapeze rigging that people trust their life to. The system can easily handle 350 pounds without bending. The product is made entirely of aluminum, so its lightweight but won't rust. Other pullup bars are made of steel, and can cost over $100 in shipping. Because our product only weighs 23 pounds, we can offer FREE SHIPPING.This product is proudly designed and manufactured completely in the USA.

NOT BAD
=========
First off, I'm pretty happy with it, but will try to write another review after 6 months, if Amazon allows that.
MISSING SCREWS
===========
The package was missing all of the M6 x 80mm Button Screws which are mentioned in the manual.
There's a cardboard sheet, covered by plastic which is supposed to contain all of the screws and bolts necessary to put the 390 together. All of the tools on the sheet, are clearly marked. But the 80mm screws aren't there at all - i.e., they are not only missing; there is not even any labeled place for it. The M6 x 80mm screws were completely forgotten when the factory put this together.
Anyway, I contacted Customer Care, using the number in the manual. First day I called the toll-free number, it was impossible to reach anyone. But the second day, it went smoothly. They took down the information, and I received the 80mm screws within a week.ASSEMBLY
==========
Regarding assembly itself, the manual was clear enough. They manual recommends two people, but it took only me, and I'm about average when it comes to assembling these things. It took a few days, moving very slowly, but it could clearly be done in an evening.THE WEIDER 390 POWER TOWER
=============================
The equipment itself seems to operate as expected. The knee pad plate seems unnecessary, so it was removed. You could just as easily use a chair, and bend your knees loosely. That seems to accomplish the same thing.
My purpose for purchasing the 390 was for the pull-ups. My doors can't handle the weight of those pull-up bars which are sold everywhere, so the 390 seemed like a good substitute. A secondary reason was the dips.
Considering that there are no weights on this machine, the whole thing is surprisingly heavy. Nothing that a grown person or two can't re-position occasionally, mind you; just heavier than expected, for a non-weight exercise unit.
I don't care for the stiff-arm oblique knee raises on this machine, but that may be only a personal preference; someone else might find it convenient.
One pleasant surprise was a place for calf raises near the bottom of the unit. Very convenient, that.GENERALLY, OK
===============
In general, it seems fine, but if Amazon permits it, I'll write a second review in about 6 months, with regard to the wear and tear issue.

Offering everything you need for a great workout, the Weider Club 390 Power Tower helps you build muscle and get fit in the comfort of your own home. The Club 390 offers three primary workout stations. First up is a dip station with a foldaway assist pad that helps you perform dips until you're strong enough to do them on your own. Should you choose not to use the assist pad, simply fold it down and move it out of the way. The pull-up station, meanwhile, also uses the assist pad to help you perform pull-ups and chin-ups until you're ready to do them independently. Finally, the vertical knee raise (VKR) station helps you lose inches around your waist, develop ab muscles worthy of showing off, and tone your oblique and hip flexor muscles. The foldaway assist pad comes with 15- and 25-pound resistance bands that add up to 80 pounds of assistance to your routines. The stronger you get over time, the less resistance you'll need to use.

Giant Vertical Knee Raise Review

Giant Vertical Knee Raise

I have one thing to say, never, ever purchase from this company. We purchased the giant vertical knee raise machine in January 2010. The machine came in 4 weeks after the scheduled arrival date and came in with major cosmetic defects. The machines white paint must have been mixed with rust and was chipped all over. After many, many phone calls Yukon sent me out two replacement side parts and promised me touch up paint for the chips. I received the replacement side parts in about 4 weeks time and several additional phone calls. Yukon did not pick up the defective sides, so now I am stuck with an additional bill to take these to the dump! Think about it, I purchase a machine for full price, it is defective, I receive replacement parts and am stuck with disposing of the defective parts. In addition to all of this I have to call Yukon 8 more times for the touch up paint that I did finally receive.
At the end of this mess, I spoke with one of the co-owners of Yukon. He was one of the rudest people I have ever spoken to and has no sense of customer service. My recommendation for anyone is to never deal with this company, you will not be satisfied with your product or any service you may receive from them.

Unit arrived within four days, free shipping, ground!
Very impressed with the finished product. The assist really helps and works well. The unit has some nice features, like both the assist platform and dip arms easily folds out of the way and lock in place giving more room for chinning.
At 200 and 130lbs the chinning and dip bars are adequate for me and my wife. There is a little give in the bars when I use it, but it still feels very safe. I doubt that it would hold up well if 4-5 guys were using it, but it should last us fine.
The unit came nicely packaged in double boxes and shipping was free and much faster than I anticipated.
While it did take a the better part of an evening to assemble, the instructions were very clear and warned that assembly would take some time. You'll need a 17mm wrench (or crescent or pliers) along with the included allen wrenches. Power tools don't work well, because some of the angles make access tough. A 17mm ratchet would be quicker than a wrench.
Unfortunately the unit says made in China in several places, so ease of assembly is somewhat compromised by manufacturing quality. The instructions said you might need a hammer to complete assembly. I didn't need one, but thought about it a couple times.
One last note regarding assembly. One component was not drilled. It looks like the part was packaged before it went through the final manufacturing step. I called the company using the number listed on the manual. I got a quick response and they are sending a new part, no problem. The 10-20 day estimated delivery is kind of a bummer, but now I can drill the hole in the original part myself and not worry about voiding any warranty and having to send anything back.
Overall, I'm very happy with the product, price and service.

Angled Back Machine Review

Angled Back Machine

I received this for Christmas. Full assembly was required, but it was not difficult and can be accomplished in less than a half hour if you have an adjustable wrench and a socket wrench set. My shipment included "revised" assembly instructions in the packing slip. I didn't realize that until I called the shipper for help.
The finished product is very sturdy, moves smoothly, and can be adjusted for position at several locations to ensure a comfortable and effective workout.
I'd have given this five stars if the two grip bars weren't constructed to be so far apart. There are six different grip options, and I'm too short to use one of them due to the wide spacing. That's only remarkable because I'm 6'2" tall.
All in all, a great product at $280.

Chin / Dip / Leg Raise Review

Chin / Dip / Leg Raise

This is the Yukon CDL-153, one of the few decent dip/chin/VKR stations on the market for serious strength trainers. The manufacturer's price is actually $300, and the MFR charges about $50 in shipping. The standard price for it on the internet is $380 with "free" shipping. However, none of the companies that sell it actually stock it; they just charge you an additional $30 for the privilege of drop-shipping it to you from the manufacturer. This is true for the company that Amazon sources this product from (Bayou Fitness).
Mine came missing the oval brackets, which the manufacturer wants people to use to prevent them from bending the tubing from cranking the bolts down too hard. I called the MFR on a Thursday and received the replacement brackets via FedEx on the following Wednesday. The MFR was pleasant and courteous.
This product is sturdily built, unlike most other C/D/VKR stations. The other stations typically claim to support up to 220-250 lbs. However, they don't employ supports for the dip arms or chin bar; they actually just bolt or weld a metal bar horizontally against the vertical frame, so even if the total load is well below the specified weight limit, the chin and dip bars tend to flex a lot.
The Yukon has strong supports for the dip arms and chin bar, and also supports for the vertical frame against the floor rails on the chin side. The stated capacity for the frame is 350 lbs, so even a 300 lb. lifter with 50 lbs. on a weight belt could exercise on this machine. However, there is no brace for the frame on the dip side, so there is some flex of the uprights even with a total load of only 225 lbs. Also, bafflingly, there is not enough clearance between the chin-side frame brace and the 3/8" nut provided for the support bolt on either the left or right side of my machine, so I couldn't attach put the supplied nut on the brace on either side.
There are a few other companies that make decent D/C/VKR stations, some of which sell online, but their products run $100-300 more than this unit, even without shipping. Tuff-stuff's VKR has better frame bracing (for around $600), but Body-Solid's units are equivalent to fragile junk you see in the chain stores. I would recommend this piece over the competition, and maybe even trying to find someone who could fabricate the dip-side braces for you out of 2" tubing.

Powerline PVKC83X Vertical Knee Raise Chin Dip Machine Review

Powerline PVKC83X Vertical Knee Raise Chin Dip Machine
Average Reviews:

I decided to take a chance on this because the reviews were ok, and it's cheap. Well...it's a good try, but I think that in order to hit the sweetspot of attractive price and UPS shippable packaging, too many compromises had to be made.
Kind of flimsy: I weight about 190, and this thing flexes noticeably under my weight. I can see the pull bar bend as I put weight on it, and when I do dips, the whole thing gets rocking. At no time does it feel like it's going to tip over, but it definitely flexes in use.
Ergonomic nightmare: I'm 6' tall, and for me, the back pad is way too low. When doing pullups, at full extension, the horizontal arms are touching my armpits- it's too narrow. When I do dips, if I'm not careful, I will hit my head on the pullup bar. I understand now why MOST pullup/dip stations place the pullup bar on the other side of the tower. It takes up more room, but it would make a MUCH more useable apparatus.
I think the photos they use are either photoshopped, or they found the tiniest models they could to make the device appear roomy. It isn't.
$200 isn't a lot of money, so I don't feel 'burned' or ripped off...I just wish now that I had built something myself instead.
Look for mine on Craigslist real soon!

Phoenix 99403 Power Stand II Review

This gym is decent once it is put together. Since it is yet another product made in China, it is not really Quality Controlled. I had to use a large hammer to fit one of the top pull-up bars into place. Some of the bolts have damaged threads. The pads used to hold you in place while doing the leg and ab workouts get really slippery when wet, so you have to use towels over them. If your chest is wide like mine, then you will most likely feel cramped in the device.
Overall though it is not a bad gym. For the price (Under $150), and if you get free shipping, it is well worth the money. Just expect to use your own tools and a hammer when putting it together.

This product was very dissapointing for me. Here is why:
1. Dip bars slide left to right no matter how tight the bolts and nuts are. Very unsafe for doing dips. Very poor construction. Need to weld the joints to really use this for dips.
2. Pull up bar gets in the way when doing a dip. Front pull up bar design is terrible
3. I am 6ft tall and the unit is too short to do any decent pull ups. Also, the rubber/foam pull up grips slide right off. Very poor design. Useless.
The only thing this thing is good for is leg lifts and taking up space. I will be contacting the vendor about this. DO NOT BUY THIS TYPE OF EQUIPMENT WITHOUT TRRING IT OUT FIRST. I will be selling this on craigslist.

Amber Sporting Goods Space Saver VKR Workout Tower Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off: I received the shipment missing two pieces from the manufacturer. I emailed them requesting assistance. They immediately shipped the missing two pieces to me. I can't fault a company for an honest mistake, but I will commend them for so quickly and easily fixing it.
Secondly, the unit, itself.
A) Construction: I was able to put it together by myself in under 2 hours.
B) Exercises: The pullups are good. Good widegrip and normal pullup options. Very little movement when using. The dips wobble just a little, but the tower is certainly stable. Also, because the dips are on the same side as the pullup bar, there needs to be a slight bit of care to avoid the overhead pullup bar when raising on the dips. This does not hinder the exercise, just requires a little getting used to. Although I don't use them as much, the pushup bars and vertical knee raise bars work well.
C) Space: this is why I purchased this equipment. I had a limited space and this machine excels at that. Because the exercises are all on the same side, the machine fits smooothly up against a wall. I am more than willing to be a little more attentive when doing dips in order to have the equipment fit where I wanted it to.
D) Bottomline: I wanted a pullup and dips machine and I had a limited space to put it in and the Amber VKR Tower - Space Saver definitely met my needs, along with adding two additional exercise options, and all for a very reasonable price ($130 + $55 S&H). I am very satisfied with my purchase.

My biggest concern was if this can handle 6'3 265lbs of weight. It is sturdy. Only thing I didn't like was the pushup bars but they aren't bad but you can't go DEEP cause there is a bar that will touch your head before you get to that point. I mainly got this for pullups and leg raises anyway it's a nice addition to my home gym. You're looking at a power tower, same as I was when I saw this one. I saw this one at my local sports store, got to try it out. They were charging $40 more for the thing plus a $40 assembly charge. The thing came UPS, saved $50 bucks with the super saver shipping and I was lucky enough to be home when the UPS guy had to lug the 80 lb. box to my door. The thing went together like clockwork. I had all the pieces and got them tight as a drum. To the guy that left the review referring the paracord, just tighten the bolt a little more, then the arms will hold wherever you put them. One problem for me on the whole deal, one of the arm pads wasn't assembled properly and it was missing the threads for the bolt that holds it to the apparatus. I called the company, they sent it out quick like a bunny, zero problems dealing with them. The pad they sent is a different color than the apparatus I bought, but my elbow won't notice. The company ships out anything if its missing, they didn't hassle me. I get a great workout on this thing. The dip arms are high, but I use a crate to get on them. I use a chair to work out to failure on pull-ups. It works like a charm.

The product arrived earlier than I expected, which was a plus. During the installation process, I noticed the manufacturing defect on the bottom parallel support beam (the one that connects the vertical legs). As a result, the stand is a little crooked. It's not balanced and wobbles a bit so I had to jam a piece of cardboard under it to keep the it stable. The pull-up bar is a hollow tube and feels flimsy while I'm exercising. I'm not a big guy and weigh only 160 pounds. At times, I get the uneasy feeling that the pull-up bar will bend and snap off. The rubber grips keep slipping off while doing pull-ups so I removed them and wrapped the bar with tape. Don't try performing pull-ups too fast or else this stand will tip over. This equipment stands 85 inches tall and is 24.5 inches wide. The dip handles feel sturdy, but again, try not to do it too fast or else it will tip. For the price, you can find other better equipments. I decided to get this one because the dimensions fit my home gym. I didn't pay full retail price for it since I had a gift card, still, I was expecting better quality.

Insanity: The Ultimate Cardio Workout and Fitness DVD Program Review

Insanity: The Ultimate Cardio Workout and Fitness DVD Program
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a former P90X junkie. That program literally changed my life and got me into the best shape of my life, even at 40 years old.
So I was pumped when I saw this one coming down the pike. Got it for my birthday last year. However, this is not P90X. That is not a criticism at all, just don't expect more of the same.
This is all floor exercises using your body weight with lots of plyometric and isometic exercises, cardio and core exercise that will work you - hard. And then it will work your core even more. Its primary focus is the core.
And it will get you into the best shape of your life. I say that with a few caveats.
It's broken into two four week segments with a "recovery" week in between. I completed the first four weeks, the "recovery" week and the first week of the second half of the program. Had to slow down the intensity because my job went to 12 hour shifts.
I now do it several times a week, when time permits. I can tell you this, though: I do the Plyometric workout from P90X when I need an easy day. My leg strength, especially the explosive kind, has increased tenfold. And my cardio is through the roof.
But this will kick your a** no matter what kind of shape you are in. Even the participants in the DVD have to quit and take breaks. It's that intense.
It is tough on the body, though, so be prepared. If you aren't in some semblance of shape, you may want to rethink this one. I pulled a neck muscle during the first week because I didn't breathe properly. It will tax your joints, your knees, your feet, your back. It requires serious focus. Breathing is key. Drink lots of water. And move at your own pace.
The caveat is really only this: you may lose quite a bit of muscle mass. This doesn't mean you will get less strong but with no exercises for the biceps or the lats (no pull-ups here), those "glamour muscles" will lose size.
People commented on my weight loss, even though I wasn't trying to lose weight. I just couldn't eat enough food. Your food intake will determine your results. So I shrank but, in many ways, I was stronger than ever. Size doesn't always equal strength.
You will notice your body change, your core will be the strongest it's ever been and you will be in incredible shape, even if you only do the program at half the intensity.
I give it a thumbs up but know what you want to get out of the program and understand what it is about before investing your time and money in it.

This product is what I expected from the infomercial - the infomercial is a good representation of what you'll get. The DVDs are good, come in a small case (no excess packaging to exaggerate or compensate for lack of real product). The accompanying written materials are good too.
However, I found that I wasn't quite in shape enough when P90X arrived to use it well. I went back and bought Tony Horton's "Power Half Hour" and used that for a few weeks first - had to wake up some muscles I've let go dormant. I've been in good shape most of my life, but kind of got lazy lately - I needed to get a basic foundation before I could jump into the incredible workouts he provides.
Make no mistake; this is a commitment. The workouts are long, and hard, but they are engaging. No geeky cheesy cheerleader pep talks in the DVD, and no arrogant gym rat jerks either. If I win the lottery, I'll try to hire Tony as my personal trainer; he has a good positive attitude, and seems to keep the workouts real with a sense of humility and humor.
The segment timer is great. Though the workouts are typically an hour long, he has "chunked" them down into segments, with a "progress bar" on the screen - kind of like the bar on the computer - so you can adjust your pace or your mindset with the workout.
Tony uses both men and women of differing degrees of flexibility and fitness; there's always a body on the screen up there to help me with my own form.
I'm a former Marine - and this is used to replace my "daily thirteen." If only I knew about some of these workouts back in the day... So I give it a thumbs up from the perspective of some really challenging workouts I've experienced in the past.
Overall, a good deal. But be warned, it isn't for the fat couch potato. Like the infomercial says, its for folks that want to get in BETTER shape; the expectation is that you already are in shape and want to take it to the next level.

Tired of ineffective workouts that sound great but produce less-than-optimal results? Turn to the P90X Extreme Home Fitness system, a bundle of 12 sweat-inducing, muscle-pumping workouts designed to transform your body from regular to ripped in just 90 days. Hosted by personal trainer Tony Horton, the series of DVDs will help you get lean, bulk up, or grow stronger, with an endless variety of mix-and-match routines to keep you motivated. The secret behind the P90X system is an advanced training technique called "muscle confusion," which accelerates the fitness process by constantly introducing new moves and routines so that your body never plateaus and you never get bored. The more you confuse the muscle, the harder your body has to work to keep up. And the more variety you put into your workout, the better and faster your results will be. By breaking old routines and opening new doors, secondary and tertiary muscles are constantly being activated and developed.
In addition to the 12 DVD workouts, the P90X comes with a comprehensive three-phase nutrition plan, specially designed supplement options, a detailed fitness guide packed with valuable information on how to get the most from your program, a How to Bring It DVD that provides a quick overview of the system, a calendar to track your progress, online peer support, and much more.
The DVD Workouts Each of the 12 highly diverse and intense DVD workouts focuses on either a specific set of muscle groups or a unique training technique.

Workout One: Chest & Back. This superset chest-and-back-blasting workout emphasizes two classic upper-body exercises--push-ups and pull-ups--to build strength and develop shape. The combination of these two push and pull movements will help you burn loads of calories while simultaneously attacking, strengthening, and developing multiple muscle groups.

Workout Two: Plyometrics. Get ready to go airborne. Offering more 30 explosive jumping moves, this intense cardio routine will keep you in the air most of the time. Plyometrics, also known as jump training, has been proven to dramatically improve athletic performance. If your sport involves a ring, rink, field, court, or track, this training will give you the edge. Just be prepared to "bring it" for a full hour when you leap into this workout, because there is no letting up.

Workout Three: Shoulders & Arms. Nothing rounds out the perfect physique like a pair of well-defined arms and shoulders, and with its potent combination of pressing, curling, and fly movements, this routine will leave you feeling stronger and looking sexier. Whether you want to build muscle mass or just slim and tighten what you've already got, these targeted shoulder and arm exercises will give you the results you want.

Workout Four: Yoga X. Yoga is a vital part of any fitness regimen, and is an absolute must for an extreme program like P90X. This routine combines strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, and breath work to enhance your physique and calm your mind. Yoga X will leave you feeling energized, invigorated, and maybe even a little enlightened.

Workout Five: Legs & Back. Get ready to squat, lunge, and pull for a total-body workout like no other. While the main focus of this workout lies in strengthening and developing the leg muscles (quads, hamstrings, glutes, and calves), there are also a handful of great pull-up exercises to give your legs a quick breather while you work the upper body.

Workout Six: Kenpo X. Kenpo X was created to give P90X users a high-intensity cardiovascular workout packed with lots of punching and kicking combinations to improve balance, endurance, flexibility, and coordination. During this workout you'll learn some of the most effective ways to defend yourself, while at the same time getting your body in peak condition.

Workout Seven: X Stretch. Stretching is the one thing that will help you achieve a higher level of athleticism over a longer period of time. The X Stretch routine is an integral part of the program, as it helps prevent injuries and avoid plateaus. The extensive full-body stretches that make up this routine use disciplines from Kenpo karate, hatha yoga, and various sports to ensure that your body is fully prepared to meet all P90X challenges head-on.

Workout Eight: Core Synergistics. Each and every exercise in the Core Synergistics workout recruits multiple muscle groups to build and support the core (lumbar spine and trunk muscles), while at the same time conditioning your body from head to toe. Loaded with a variety of fun, unique, and challenging exercises, this routine will get you moving in all directions to maximize your P90X results.

Workout Nine: Chest, Shoulders, & Triceps. Packed with an array of moves that target both large and small muscles, this workout will do wonders for your upper body. In just one full sequence you'll get a healthy dose of presses, flys, and extensions to push you to the brink. The results will be a stronger, leaner, and highly defined upper torso that will leave you looking awesome, with or without a shirt.

Workout 10: Back & Biceps. With a host of curls and pull-ups, this routine will make it fun to flex those powerful biceps. But don't worry, ladies--by using lighter weight, you can focus on toning and tightening these showcase arm muscles without adding the size that most guys covet. Additionally, this workout also provides some great back definition that everyone can appreciate. Regardless of your goals, you will achieve them in dramatic fashion if you dig in and max out your reps.

Workout 11: Cardio X. This low-impact cardio routine can be used in a variety of ways to meet your P90X goals. Use it in addition to your standard P90X workload when you want to burn some extra calories, or as a substitute if your body needs a break from the program's high-impact workouts. Whatever your reason for using Cardio X, you'll find it a fun, full-throttle, fat-burning workout that will leave you feeling lean and mean.

Workout 12: Ab Ripper X. The combination and sequence of movements in this unique workout taps into not only abdominal strength, but true core strength as well. Master these 11 highly effective exercises and you will achieve vital abdominal muscle strength to benefit your overall health and physical performance. You'll also develop that highly coveted six-pack as you take Ab Ripper X to full throttle. It's extreme work that's better than any machine in any club.

The Nutrition Plan Following the P90X nutrition plan is just as vital to your overall success as any of the extreme workouts in this program. Specifically designed to work in tandem with the P90X workout routines, this three-phase eating plan recommends the perfect combination of foods to satisfy your body's energy needs every step of the way. P90X is not about quick fixes or miracle diets. It's about selecting the healthy foods that you want to eat, and determining the portion amounts that will provide your body with the right amount of fuel to excel during exercise. The P90X nutrition plan offers three phases. Phase 1 is the Fat Shredder, a high-protein-based diet designed to help you strengthen your muscles while simultaneously and rapidly shedding fat from your body. Phase 2 is the Energy Booster, a balanced mix of carbohydrates and proteins with a lower amount of fat to achieve additional energy for performance. And Phase 3 is the Endurance Maximizer, an athletic diet of complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and lower fat, with the emphasis on more carbohydrates. You'll need this combination of foods as fuel to get the most out of your final few weeks and truly be in the best shape of your life.
