Core All Black Military Review

Core All Black Military

I have had my Core for less than a year and have had to send it in for repairs 4 times. The pins that hold the band to the watch are weak and come undone and fall out frequently. I finally convinced Suunto to send me spare pins, and I secured them myself. I have twice had to send it in for button failures, and now for a display failure.
Suunto has always replaced the watch, but it is a tedious process of creating a service order and mailing it in. That means no wathc for a few weeks. I am currently in Iraq and will have to mail it to someone in the US to ship to handle as Suunto will not take it from here.
There are few differences between the Core and the Vector. The storm alarm is fairly worthless, and will drive you nuts going off when the A/C turns on in the house. The sunrise/sunset feature is cute.
My suggestion is to stick with the Suunto Vector. It will hold up much better.

Suunto Core Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Depth Measurement Review

Suunto Core Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Depth Measurement
Average Reviews:

Have had this watch a little over a week, and decided to write an review for it.
Just a brief comparison between two top-notch ABC watches: - the Core, and the Casio Pathfinder PAW-1500 Titanium, which I purchase a little over three weeks ago as well. I would say, the cosmetic design, the wealth of functions, the ABC accuracy, and the graphical display of the Core, is better than the Pathfinder. However, the built material, the readability, and the push button feel, is not as good as the Pathfinder.
The display is in reverse format, meaning the background is in black, and the alpha-numeric letters are in silver-white. Adjusting the contrast in the Suunto hidden menu does help, but of course, still not as clear as the normal black letter on white background. No fault of Suunto, but just the way the design is. The buttons are responsive and easy to press. To navigate through the menus, the "Mode" button and the "View" button have to be pushed in different combination to get what you want. It might seem confusing at first, but once you understand the logical layout, it's fairly easy to remember. Give yourself a couple of days to get used to it.
Compliments: Extremely accurate ABC. I compare their readings with the actual ABC instruments. The accuracy is incredible and beats the Casio Pathfinder in the dust! The storm alarms reacts to the air pressure change accurately as well. The electronic compass is awesome. Once you set the course, the bearing indicator would display an arrow and directional words (left and right), to guide you to the correct course, which is a great feature. User installable batteries which is great to save a lot of money down the road.
Complaints: The directional rotation ring is difficult to turn. If you have finger nails, you'll need to use them, if you bite your finger nails, good luck. The alarm is a bit soft and hard to hear sometimes. The same problem as the Pathfinder. I wish they can make it louder. The wrist strap looks and feels cheap. The illuminator is a bit dim too.
Tips: This watch has earned a lot of bad reps due to poor quality control in its manufacturer plant in China. It's been tons of complaints and reported problem. After doing some research, it appears that Suunto has finally fixed the hardware and software bugs. When you order the watch, make sure the serial number stars from "918xxxxxx" onward. Mine is "924" and so far so good. You should email the seller, to make sure they send you the updated version as noted above, then your new watch won't spend most of its life going back and forth in the delivery trucks.
Follow up review (please read and rate):
It's been nearly a month I have been wearing this watch, thought I should provide more feedback to help those who are interested in this watch.
I have worn this watch to a two-weeks trip to Eastern Europe. I used all ABC functions intensively, especially the altimeter log and compass functions. To begin with, all readings are extremely accurate as it has always been. The only inaccuracy is its barometer when worn on the wrist, which is understandable due to the body temperature influence. The watch functioned flawlessly during the extreme weather, ranging from 1 degree in Celcius (outdoor), all the way up to warmer than 40 degrees Celcius (I wore it to the hotspring pool for hours). I have also used the daily alarm twice a day, illumination for 3 times a night in average, and the battery is still kicking like a champ. Many reported the battery died out after a month or so even with light use, it appears that Suunto has fixed this major flaw. Yet, it's been just a month of intensive use so I can't say for sure. Even if I have to replace the battery every 6 months, I think it's still worth is as the battery costs less than a couple of dollars to replace. So, my conclusion is: The Core has reclaimed its reputation in my book. I have no doubt that it will continue to perform well. Just make sure that you buy the one with the latest firmware (serial number after:92xxxxxx SW: 1.1.0 HW: 3A. Please rate and comment if you find this helpful

The weather was clear for days as your expedition ascended 10,000 feet, but then the barometric pressure started to change and your Storm Alarm went off. Thanks to the Suunto Core Altimeter Watch, you set up your high-altitude camp ahead of the big storm and are in your sleeping bag sipping hot cocoa before it hits. Bravo.

Suunto T3c Heart Rate Monitor and Fitness Trainer Watch without ANT Belt Review

Suunto T3c Heart Rate Monitor and Fitness Trainer Watch without ANT Belt

I used this HRM for past 2 days in spin class. Picked up my HR in a studio with many people using HRM (mostly Polar) without any issues. I love the feature of having bars which shows HR in BMP and the TE. I have 2 Polar which were waste of my money (see my other reviews for my woes with Polar). I have a reliable Timex but it didn't show HR in %. Usually in spin class, intructors give target HR in %. So I was looking for a HRM which showed in %. Love this watch. I am keeing my fingers cross that I'd still love this watch in 1-2 yr time.
I was actually going to buy the T1C but the orange color was too tacky for me. The ladies version of T3C is in green. I preferred and got the brown (men's version) which looked almost black.

Sleekly and stylishly designed, the Suunto T3c Heart Rate watch-style heart rate monitor is perfect as an everyday workout partner for active trainers. The T3c can tell you how long you need to work out to reach the desired Training Effect goal at your current heart rate intensity. It also accurately measures the calories you burn in real time, records your training history in an internal logbook (up to 15 workouts), offers interference-free digital ANT transmission and coding, and provides PC compatibility to track your progress as your fitness increases. It has a water resistance rating of 30 meters (100 feet), enabling it to withstand rain and splashes of water, but not swimming.
It works in tandem with the included heart rate monitoring Comfort Belt, which has been improved by Suunto to perform and feel better during your activity. Traction strips keep the belt in place during intense workouts, plus you can unclip the heart rate module and toss the fabric strap in the wash for easy cleaning. It will also work with one of Suunto's POD (Peripheral Observation Device) accessories that are tailored to individual sports (such as running or biking) or enable you to view detailed performance reports on your PC.
Training Effect The Training Effect function shows the degree to which an individual workout improves your aerobic fitness. More powerful than conventional zone training features, Training Effect tells you the quantifiable results of your workout.
If your workouts are too easy, your aerobic condition won't improve. Likewise, if your workouts are too difficult, you run the risk of overtraining and hindering improvement. Between those extremes, it's difficult to gauge the effectiveness of a workout on gut-feeling alone.
The Training Effect feature takes the guesswork out of working out, giving you real-time and post-exercise information about the effectiveness of your workout. It's based on *EPOC (Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption) measurements during exercise, combined with information about your current fitness level and exercise history. During exercise, Training Effect shows the real-time effectiveness of your workout. And after exercise, Training Effect displays the final degree to which a workout improved your condition.

About Suunto Suunto was founded in 1936 by outdoors man and a keen orienteering enthusiast, Tuomas Vohlonen, who had long been bothered by a problem: the inaccuracy of traditional dry compasses and their lack of steady needle operation. Being an engineer with an inventive turn of mind, he discovered and patented the production method for a much steadier needle, better readings, and a new level of accuracy.
By 1950 the company was exporting compasses to over 50 countries around the world, including Canada and the United States. In 1952, Helsinki was hosting the Olympic Games, and the torches carried to light the Olympic flame were Suunto products. The next step was improving the stability and accuracy of marine compasses. The first marine compass, the Suunto K-12, was launched onto the market in 1953. In 1957, Suunto started manufacturing hypsometers, which measure the height of trees.
In the 1960s, the compass range grew further and Suunto introduced its first diving compass--initiated by the divers themselves. A British sports diver attached a Suunto compass to his wrist and found that the device also worked underwater. Thanks to his feedback and initiatives, the new business category was found. Suunto's exports and business grew steadily and Suunto then focused on combining its strength in precision mechanics with new skills in electronics. Accuracy, reliability, and ruggedness have been Suunto's key values from the very beginning of the company history.
Today, Suunto is a leading designer and manufacturer of sports instruments for training, diving, mountaineering, hiking, skiing, sailing, and golf. True to its roots, Suunto is today the world's biggest compass manufacturer. Prized for their design, accuracy and dependability, Suunto sports instruments combine the aesthetics and functionality of watches with sport-specific computers that help athletes at all levels analyze and improve performance. Headquartered in Vantaa, Finland, Suunto employs more than 500 people worldwide and distributes its products to nearly 60 countries. The company is a subsidiary of Helsinki-based Amer Sports Corporation with the sister brands Wilson, Salomon, Atomic, Precor, and Mavic.

Timex Ironman Midsize Race Trainer Heart Rate Monitor with Data Xchanger Watch, Black/Grey, Mid Size Review

Timex Ironman Midsize Race Trainer Heart Rate Monitor with Data Xchanger Watch, Black/Grey, Mid Size
Average Reviews:

I had been using a Timex for several years, and was very happy with it until it started malfunctioning. I went looking for a new one, comparing Polar, Suunto, and then later Timex. My two primary concerns were quality, a diffuse set of factors, and the ability to work with an Apple running Mac OS X. Only some of Polar's and Suunto's watches work with a Mac, and then only with external software. I was surprised when I found Timex's Ironman Trainer packages also worked with Apple.
Provisos:
- A sleek light watch, that fits my wrists - I have proportionately slender wrists, although I'm fairly large - but might be unusable on men with large wrists.
- Data management is done on a website, requiring registrationPros:
- Looks great
- Easy to use, although it has many features
- Reliable (assumed from my long-term experience with other Timex watches)
- Inexpensive (the cost was $50 less than advertised elsewhere, and much less than comparable Polar/Suunto watches)
- User-exchangeable battery (some Polar/Suunto models require shipping for battery replacement)
- Works nicely with PC's and Mac with a free account with Training Peaks, an effortless installation and upload to the third-party site.
Cons:
- There are some desktop packages, they are a bit pricey for my needs, $130 per year, a recreational fitness buff. The basic online statistics are good, but I would love to be able to slice-and-dice my performance numbers in more detail.

Suunto t1c Heart Rate Monitor and Fitness Trainer Watch (Espresso) Review

This was a very disappointing purchase. Like others reviews have stated, this watch does not look nearly as nice as the photo.
The face of the watch is an unusually soft form plastic that seems to scratch much more easily than any watch I have ever had. Mine is quite scratched.
Finally, after about two months, after showering with the watch on, the screen went blank (It is my understanding that this watch is water resistant). I sent the watch in for repairs. After more than a month it was returned to me. In a matter of days it ceased functioning. I am now sending it in a second time.
Definitely not worth the expense. Maybe the higher quality Suunto watches perform better.
Finally, the interface for programing, controlling and using the basic functions of the watch is not particularly logical. I found it quite annoying to use.

The Suunto t1c heart rate monitor and fitness trainer combines precision technology with contemporary styling, creating an easy-to-use yet sophisticated workout device. Whether you're hitting the gym to work off that extra holiday weight, going for your daily run, or practicing your favorite sport, every bit of information helps. That's where the t1c comes into play, as it works with the included comfort belt to accurately monitor your real-time or average heart rate, so you know how to get the most out of each session. Simply take a quick glance at your zone training status while exercising to see if you're training at the right intensity, or pre-set your maximum heart rate alarm to keep from pushing too hard. For added versatility, the Suunto t1c is also compatible with select cardio devices, so may be able to monitor your progress on your gym's treadmill or elliptical trainer.
The t1c's zone training function is the watch's centerpiece, with three separate zones to keep your workout at a safe and consistent level. Zone 1 is ideal for burning fat and improving cardiovascular health; Zone 2 ups the ante with increased calorie-burning and cardiovascular benefits; and Zone 3 is for people who want to push their limits and improve their peak performance. In the process, the t1c displays your current heart rate, average heart rate, maximum heart rate, and calories burned. And when you're not working out, the t1c functions as a stylish timepiece that can be used with minimal instruction, with such features as dual-time mode, a date, an alarm, and a stopwatch. The t1c--which is a terrific companion for walking, cardio training at a gym, running, and a host of other fitness activities--also lets you track your workout progress for the past two months.

Suunto t3 Heart Rate Monitor and Fitness Trainer Watch (Rose) Review

Suunto t3 Heart Rate Monitor and Fitness Trainer Watch (Rose)

I have used this several times and it works well, I like knowing where my HR is and how many calories I've burned. In my opinion, it's not very intuitive, so be prepared to use the manual, and the face does scratch pretty easily. I have had issues in my kickboxing class where the watch cannot find the belt, I'm guessing because of interference with other HRMs. It also doesn't fit under my (boxing) gloves, which is a hassle, I've given up using it during class and have just been using it for biking.

You're sweating, your heart is racing, and all your hard work is starting to pay off. What's your next move? If you're smart, you'll take the guesswork out of your training with the Suunto t3 heart rate monitor watch. Bundled with a Suunto heart rate belt, the t3 lets you accurately monitor your real-time heart rate, average heart rate, and calorie consumption. The watch also tracks your real-time Training Effect, a quick and accurate measurement of how hard your body is working at any given moment. By knowing your Training Effect, you'll enjoy a more intimate understanding of your body's workout "sweet spot," an essential tidbit if you want to achieve your targets without setting yourself back by under- or over-training.
The Training Effect works intuitively: The watch first notes the info from your personal fitness profile, and then analyzes your physiological progress and translates the data into a simple one-to-five scale. For example, if you want to improve your aerobic fitness at a moderate tempo, you should exercise until your TE meter reads between 3.0 and 3.9, two to four times per week. To improve your aerobic condition more rapidly--but without the risk of over-training--you should push yourself harder once or twice per week, so your TE meter reads 4.0 to 4.9, with a few recovery sessions in the TE 1.0 to 2.0 range. The Training Effect is relative to each individual. While a novice runner might achieve a TE of 4.0 on a four-mile jog, a professional runner might have to complete an uphill marathon to get the same reading. In other words, both runners will have to exercise hard to achieve a TE of 4.0.
The Suunto t3 also offers interference-free digital ANT transmission, making it easy to pair your heart rate monitor with the HR belt and an optional Suunto training pod. Training pods are small units that attach to such items as a running shoe or a bike to calculate your speed and distance while you exercise. Pods are ideal for athletes who aren't satisfied with half-hearted training efforts, but really want to monitor their training routines down to the last detail. Finally, the t3 includes a training logbook that compiles your progress and personal stats. You can even conduct a more thorough analysis of your workouts by using the Suunto Training Manager Lite software.

I've only had it a few weeks, but I've used it almost daily, and it works reliably with one very minor glitch: its sensitivity in the first minute or two of a workout is questionable. Sometimes the heart rate display in the first few minutes doesn't change when I know full well my heart rate has. This is probably related to electrical conductivity. As soon as you start to perspire at all it's 100% reliable, and I've avoided this problem by pre-moistening the contacts. I think one can buy special conductive gel like what they use in EKGs. Anyway, this is minor. I've used it on twelve 50-180 minute runs and never had any problem except in the first minute or two. The chest strap is also comfortable enough that you can forget it's there.

Suunto M5 Women's Heart Rate Monitor and Fitness Training Watch (Black/Gold) Review

Suunto M5 Women's Heart Rate Monitor and Fitness Training Watch (Black/Gold)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered the black model M5 and was very pleased with the watch except that I found the negative display ( white numbers on black background ) to be very difficult to see at dusk or in any low light conditions. It is not nearly as bright as the product photos show except at high noon sun. If you exercise mostly during full sun, it's very readable, in fact probably less glare than the white face. Consider your exercise venue before you order. Could be my eyes, but after searching other forums on negative faces, I'm not alone. I wound up exchanging the black face for 2 white face women's M5s. I was concerned about the women's band on my wrist, but it still fit with a hole or 2 to spare. Trinow fitness was very helpful and I got them next day. The watch bodies are the same, so if I really decide I want the man's band, I'll order one, but don't see the need right now.
If you're looking for a training aid to get you on track, this is it. I ordered the foot pod and bike pod and they both connected flawlessly and are pretty accurate when checked on a known distance. The chest strap is the most comfortable I have tried and it also links up quickly. We've been using them for about 3 weeks and so far I'm still very satisfied. We were hit or miss with our exercise routine, but the M5 takes the guesswork out and keeps you on track. You really need to maintain your heart rate at a training level for the correct amount of time to get a full workout, and the M5 has helped us do that. A big plus is all the devices use a user-replacable, common watch battery. Remember that Suunto is currenlty offering a free Movestick interface with the M5 & M4, so if you buy, log on to their site and print out the rebate form. Waiting on delivery of ours as of today 8/16/10. It allows you to upload and store your training logs. I'll post a followup review in about a month.
UPDATE 1/28/11
I had to downgrade my review mainly because the software ( Movescount ) is pretty dismal when used with the M5. It's mostly a social networking tool that misses even simple tools like plotting your current fitness position versus your goals. If you want to help Suunto design a Beta quality attempt at fitness software , you'll love it. Not very intuitive.
Some points I have learned:
1. The foot POD and bike POD are fixed in their calibration with the M5. It's close, but if you're expecting a cycle computer , you're out of luck.
2. The chest strap is the most comfortable I've worn and stays wirelessly connected to the watch pretty well.
3. If you should happen to fall off your excercise plan over a certain # of days, the watch will keep repeating the same day. Suunto's way to fix it, reprogram it to a lower level and the restart at the bottom of the level you were at.
4. If you really need athlete quality reporting. This watch is not for you. It's also not $500.
5. Still like the watch. It will keep you on track. For someone trying to get in cardio shape, it's a good tool.
6. I paid $189 for mine. The price today is an indication that it's not exactly flying off the shelves. I would wager you will see this watch settle in at about $125 or a little less.
7. The PC POD does connect flawlessly and tranfers data with no problem.
8. The standard watch battery is a good idea and battery life has been very good.
9. So.....Buy the watch and enjoy it, it has surely helped improve my cardio fitness. At present, don't bother with the PC POD unless you like social networking more than fitness tracking.

Suunto Core Extreme Collector's Edition Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Depth Measurement Review

Suunto Core Extreme Collector's Edition Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Depth Measurement
Average Reviews:

This watch does not provide new innovations from the current CORE line.. but it delivers what previous models have done so well with an updated exterior. The band is extremely comfortable and the silver face with blackout screws is very attractive. The positive display is much easier to read in the daylight as compared to models with the negative/military display (acknowledging these version to look very nice but only under the right light conditions) Make no mistake, this watch will cover up most of your wrist, but its not over-the-top big. This is the first CORE watch that I have owned, but am impressed with following:
1. Digital display of the 'second hand" through perimeter hash marks
2. Sunrise/Sunset calculations available at bottom of watch by inputing the city you live in
3. Approaching storm alarm through monitoring of falling barometric pressure
4. Stopwatch/Countdown timer easy to get to through main screen
5. Accurate compass once you correctly calibrate and enter magnetic deviation for your location
This watch won't record workout/trecking data like the X and T series, so if you are looking for that you should not consider this watch. However, if you are looking for an attractive version of the CORE with no frills A, B, C, D functionality, you should consider this watch.

Satisfy you appetite for extreme! With the right information and the right attitude, you too can successfully take on some of nature's greatest challenges. The Suunto Core supplies the information, but the attitude is up to you.Altimeter The altimeter features a range up to 9000m (29 500 ft). It is ideally suited for all activities where knowing your altitude and ascent and descent rates is essential. The Core altimeter sports an altitude difference measurement that allows you to track your progress in terms of altitude climbed. The log recorder stores all your movements in altitude between the start and stop times, so you can re-live your trip at home - view graphs of changes in altitude during your treks, find out how much you climbed, the duration of ascents and descents, average ascent and descent speed and more.Barometer Suunto Core displays the current sea level pressure as a detailed graph, showing recording of the last 24 hours with a recording interval of 30 minutes. The weather trend indicator is a useful feature providing quick reference to check upcoming weather conditions. The storm alarm notifies you of a sudden drop in air pressure, which may be related to worsening weather conditions.Automatic Alti/Baro switch Suunto Core sports an Automatic Alti/Baro switch, a smart feature that senses your movement or lack thereof, switching between altimeter and barometer accordingly. When you're climbing, it records changes in elevation. And when you stop to rest, it records changes in barometric pressure. A drop in air pressure while you're sleeping under the stars will be recorded for what it really is: a change in barometric pressure, not altitudeCompass The digital compass displays the cardinal or half-cardinal point and the North. Suunto Vector Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Thermometer Review

Suunto Vector Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Thermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned the Suunto Vector for more than three years after purchasing it when I first became interested in adventure racing. While many top racers wear it, I would highly recommend it for the serious hiker, climber or backcountry skier for it's solid construction, design and versatility.
While I also wear this as my everyday watch, it's extra large size should be taken into consideration if that's something you have in mind.
There are a couple other brands available in this market segment, but the relatively low price and exceptional feature set are what continues to set this tool apart from the crowd.
Here's what you should know:
* Expect to replace the battery at least once a year. This is due to a number of reasons, one of which is the powerful backlight on the face that when activated can nearly illuminate the inside of a small tent at night. If you believe the manufacturer's warnings and want to play it safe, you may want to have this procedure performed by a professional (watch, not outdoor) shop. Suunto sells a battery pack that comes with a replacement seal and screw-in back, and this is definitely something to consider every other replacement opportunity, but you can get by with a lower-cost Duracell type 2430 3V lithium if you're on a budget.
* The altimeter is one of the strongest features, allowing you to quickly pinpoint your location on a topo map. However, plan to reset it regularly, especially after a plane ride or frequent and significant changes in altitude, or weather. This is rather easy as along as you have a confirmed location metric, but you have to remember to do it regularly to ensure the greatest accuracy. The 24-hour memory provides a total measurement of your ups and downs (ascents and descents) over that time period, a really cool record for runners, mountain bikers and skiers.
* The compass is one of the strongest in this class of devices, which to be sure isn't the greatest to begin with ... but even the serious orienteerer would be impressed. The ability to adjust for local declination is really nice.
* The barometer is good, but not great. However, if you want to be aware of potential weather changes, this will provide you with some peace of mind. Better to be safe than sorry (or worse) in this regard.
* The thermometer isn't accurate at all unless you take the watch off for 15-20 minutes or so to eliminate the warming effect of your skin/body temperature.
* Some of the controls and settings are not easy to comprehend or remember. I've never been able to figure out how to use the stopwatch, timer and lap features. If you're a swimmer or triathlete and this is important to you, look to the Timex Ironman standby.
* Waterproofing is rock solid. No worries.
* The soft-rubber watchband is comfortable to wear, but will deteriorate over time, even more rapidly in chlorine. Suunto offers a much lighter nylon/velcro alternative that I personally prefer.
Overall, I really like the Vector. But for a number of reasons already mentioned, would not feel comfortable giving it a perfect 5.0 score. But consider my 4.0 more like a 4.7 ... you can't go wrong here.

An indispensable instrument for outdoor enthusiasts, the Suunto Vector wrist- top computer combines an altimeter, barometer, compass, and thermometer, letting you plan and execute almost any activity with confidence and safety. Regardless of your excursion--whether it's climbing mountains, riding a muddy bike track, or skiing off piste--you need accurate, real-time information about your surroundings to pull off a successful trip. The Vector contributes by not only providing important data, but also keeping track of your activities so you can make rational decisions at key moments.
The built-in altimeter, which boasts a range of up to 29,500 feet, puts all 14 of the world's 8,000-plus-meter summits within the avid climber's range. Among the altimeter's functions are an altitude measurement function that lets you follow the vertical progress between stages, an automatic 24-hour memory that stores the altitude and ascent/decent rate for every hour, and an adjustable altitude alarm. Climbers will also dig the logbook function, which lets you record total and cumulative vertical ascents and descents as well as the number of runs skied.
The Vector also displays the current barometric pressure and temperature--a must for activities in which weather plays a factor. The device automatically records barometric data for the previous four days, with the first six hours manifested in one-hour intervals and the rest in six-hour intervals. When the reference altitude is set correctly, the instrument also displays the present sea level pressure, which makes it easier to read and understand the barometric pressure at high altitudes.
And few things are more important when exploring unfamiliar territory than a compass. The Vector's electronic compass contributes by guiding you with cardinal or half- cardinal points and a North-South arrow. The compass can also be set to track a certain bearing, which helps you follow a chosen direction. Meanwhile, the unit's declination adjustment function allows you to correct the difference between true North and magnetic North.
In addition to the variety of outdoor functions, the Vector also displays normal time, with such add-ons as three daily alarms, a calendar programmed to the year 2089, a stopwatch with split-time measurement, and a countdown timer. The entire design is unified by an intuitive user interface and convenient, easy-to-access control buttons--a handy extra when hiking or climbing in tough conditions. Additional features include an electro-luminescent backlight, a user-replaceable battery, and an attractive black housing. In addition, the Vector is backed by a two-year warranty on parts and labor.
What's in the Box? Vector wrist-top computer, battery, user's manual.

Suunto t4c Heart Rate Monitor and Fitness Trainer Watch (Black Frost) Review

Suunto t4c Heart Rate Monitor and Fitness Trainer Watch (Black Frost)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had my t4c for just 3 weeks, but I already love it. I am a veteran runner, used to wearing a GPS watch to track speed and distance, but this is my first HRM. It not only tells me my real-time heart rate, average and peak HR, but it has a nifty "training effect" function. I do not believe this to be "wildly inaccurate" as another reviewer has said. It will give a 1.0 to 5.0 numerical value for the difficulty of your workout. It shows a countdown to the next level, as well. When it tells me I have achieved, say, a TE level of 4.2 and it's 6 minutes until I reach the next level, I can of course increase or decrease this time by slowing down or speeding up, changing my level of exertion -- is this the "bouncing around" the other reviewer saw? But this is simply measuring the changed effect of a changed pace! At a steady pace, it counts steadily to the next level of Training Effect.
I wanted a heart-rate monitor because, in the depths of winter, I'll switch from running my rural dirt roads to the YMCA's treadmills; I was hoping that HR would offer a way to correlate my indoor workouts with my outside ones, since treadmills are different from running in the great outdoors. The t4c's training effect is a built-in answer to my need!
The manual is not so clear as to make everything easy. Oh, you'll be able to take your t4c out of the box and set it up easily; even I could do that. Going back and adjusting the settings was a bit more of a head-scratcher. The manual seemed to skip a step or two, as if it were all obvious. To the manual-writer it is; to me, though, it has required a few trips down button-pushing blind alleys to get where I want to go. But that's a small price to pay for the overall joy of this gem.
The fabric chest strap is quite comfortable; I don't even notice it. Both the watch and the strap have consumer-replaceable batteries (which I hope not to change for a long time yet!), which is better than sending the device away to Polar when the battery dies.
I wear it all day as my main watch. In the 3 weeks I've had it (while I wait for the plastic shield) it has suffered no scratches. I may not even apply the plastic thing! I would definitely recommend the Suunto to anyone looking for a quality HR monitor watch.
The only minor complaint I have is that the thing is set up for HR zones as straight percentages of max HR. You'd think the Suomi folks at Suunto could go with their fellow Finn, Karvonen, and allow one to calculate zones based on his method: as a percentage of HR range between resting HR and max HR. Well, the work-around is to set the zones to percentages that match your Karvonen numbers; you just have to do the math.

How long should you run? How fast should you pedal? How quick you should move? Answer these questions and more while receiving all the training guidance you need with the Suunto t4c heart rate monitor watch. The t4c employs a Suunto Coach feature to evaluate your athletic performance via a personalized five-day training program. Rather than spending weeks tweaking your workout regimen, the Suunto Coach quickly gets you on the right track by making intelligent training recommendations for the frequency, duration, and intensity of your workouts. And this, in turn, helps you get in great shape without wasting a ton of effort. Plus, if your schedule suddenly changes, the Suunto Coach will adapt by making a new plan that advises you which days to train and how, as well as when to rest.
The t4c also tracks your real-time Training Effect, a quick and accurate measurement of how hard your body is working at any given moment.
The Suunto t4c also offers interference-free digital ANT transmission, making it easy to pair your heart rate monitor with the included Suunto comfort belt. You can also use this secure connection to monitor your speed, distance, or cadence by pairing your Suunto t4c with an optional Suunto training pod. Training pods are small units that attach to such items as a running shoe or a bike to calculate your speed, distance, and even pedal revolutions per minute while you exercise. Pods are ideal for athletes who aren't satisfied with half-hearted training efforts, but really want to monitor their training routines down to the last detail. Finally, the t4c is equipped with an integrated training logbook that compiles your progress and personal stats. You can even conduct a more thorough analysis of your workouts by using the Suunto Training Manager Lite software.

Manufacturer's Warranty Two-year warranty

This is a great watch - fantastic functionality, easy to read, easy to operate. It came with a hideous orangeish red band that looks like something Bozo the clown would wear, so I quickly ordered the black band and changed it. Much better! Love that the battery is so easy to change and that it uses a standard size battery that's always easy to find (CR232). My only complaint is that the watch is huge and heavy, but the plus side is that the info on the watch is easy to read.

Navigate both mountain trails and city streets with ease with the Suunto Lumi Sportif wrist-top computer watch. Designed for women, the Suunto Lumi Sportif features a built-in altimeter, barometer, compass, and weather indicator, all in a clean, fresh housing. In other words, the watch is tough enough to endure a day of hard play, yet versatile enough to make a sport-inspired statement for a night out. And with a choice of different straps, pendants, or carabiner jackets, you can create a look to fit any activity.
The Lumi Sportif's primary selling point is its built-in altimeter, which displays your current altitude, vertical gain or loss from the start of a hike or climb, and your vertical ascent and descent rate. Accurate to within 30,000 feet, the altimeter is an extremely valuable tool for mountaineering, backcountry skiing, and wilderness travel. The altimeter contributes to your excursion in several ways. If you're standing on or near an obvious geographic feature, such as a ridge, trail, or creek, the altimeter can alert you to your current elevation and help you find your position on a topographic map. Similarly, if you plan on climbing a slope to a certain elevation and then traversing, the Lumi Sportif can help you stay on course. And as a bonus, the watch includes a unique start-from-zero function, so you don't have to enter a reference altitude. Instead, with the single push of a button, the altimeter will begin tracking your ascent and descent.
The Lumi Sportif also includes a barometer, which measures and records air pressure to help you predict changing conditions--from sunny skies to hair-bending electrical storms. The barometer helps you decide whether to bring a soft shell or rain shell jacket when the skies look ominous, or even when to high-tail it back to the car. In general, low pressure brings inclement weather, while high pressure brings stability and clear skies. If you've arrived at camp and notice the pressure starting to plunge, it's probably a good idea to secure the tent and crawl in. Likewise, if you were on a climb, it would be prudent to find shelter and retreat. Even at home, the Lumi Sportif barometer can look beyond office walls, skyscrapers, and nearby hills to help you plan for upcoming activities.
If you want a weather forecast that extends out a few hours, you can turn to the built-in weather trend indicator. The indicator shows the barometric history for the last three and six hours, helping you predict the weather with amazing accuracy. What's more, the watch doesn't give you a regional forecast posted earlier in the day, but rather the most current information about the weather directly overhead. In addition, the Lumi Sportif can sense an approaching squall even when the sky looks clear. This intelligent Storm Alarm--one of several intelligent features designed to keep you safe and secure--is activated by a rapid drop in air pressure over a three-hour period. Once the Lumi Sportif senses the change, the Storm Alarm sounds and flashes, letting you know that something unpleasant is fast approaching. And no outdoor watch is worth its salt without a digital compass, a great tool for keeping track of your direction while skiing, hiking, or exploring a new city. You can set and follow a bearing with a traditional rotating bezel, or simply point the top of the watch toward your intended destination and lock it in.
Additional features include several traditional watch functions, including dual times, a date display, and an alarm with a five-minute snooze; predicted times for sunrise and sunset to help you maximize your daylight hours; a day counter that keeps you abreast of an upcoming event; an automatic Alti/Baro mode that senses movement or lack thereof and switches between the altimeter and barometer accordingly; and the ability to function in English, German, French, and Spanish.
The Suunto Lumi Sportif comes equipped with a pendant and carabiner jacket, and is compatible with a number of other fashion-forward straps, pendants, and carabiners, depending on your taste. The Lumi Sportif carries a two-year warranty.

Suunto Core Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Depth Measurement Review

Suunto Core Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Depth Measurement
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I've owned several suunto watches for different purposes. I've never been disappointed at all. Most of the complaints are about the scratching of the face. I buy face protectors and I never have an issue. I'm currently using this watch with the foot, bike and pc pod and I love it. It tracks all my running, biking and weight training states. Suunto M5 Women's Heart Rate Monitor and Fitness Training Watch (Black/Silver) Review

Suunto M5 Women's Heart Rate Monitor and Fitness Training Watch (Black/Silver)

Suunto M2 Series Watch Review

Suunto M2 Series Watch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm posting this coz I couldn't find any reviews when I was trying to choose one myself. I hope this helps!
So I deliberated for ages...the polar? the garmin? the suunto? And then which model?
They all have great features... but I think the Suunto M-series are the better looking watches and yes, I am that shallow.
It's my first HRM and I found it very easy to use...
Pros:
- large face, easy to read
- nice looking
- pause function, apparently the session ends if you don't restart after pausing for one hour
- can enter your year of birth and weight (I guess it works out your calories based on this information)
- 4 weeks of cumulative information
- can view details of your last previous workout
- tells you if you are in zone 1, 2 or 3 and beeps when you move between them. Also shows you when you are below zone 1 and above zone 3
- gives you stats on calories burned, time and time spent in each zone
- shows you calories on the fly (apparently some HRMs only show you after the workout)
- strap and watch are very comfortable
- reasonably priced
- very motivating!
Cons:
- No back light
- can't program "zones"
- doesn't take your height into consideration when estimating calories
- does not connect with the other suunto products, ie footpod, bikecomputer and usb data collector (to plug into your computer). Even if it did, they are very expensive.
- no fitness test or workout program
- only gives you details of one previous workout. Thought it does provide you with a summary of workouts in total. (Not sure how this works yet) I personally would love to scroll through each individual workout. Perhaps no HRMs provide that function. I don't know.
- doesn't show all information at once, you have to scroll through. It shows you two pieces of information on each screen though, ie heart rate plus calories burned (I can't remember the other couplings coz I mostly kept it on that setting). Scrolling through doesn't bother me at all. I think that's what you get for having the heart rate so large on the screen, which I really like.
Honestly, as much as I like it I am wondering whether to exchange it for the M4 which is only $30 more and it will give me a backlight and some of the other features...
My only issue is that I don't think you get the beeps and zone information with the M4. Whether I decide to upgrade or not, I'll be happy with this one... just wondering whether I'll be happier with the other one.
Oh, and if you're trying to decide between Suunto HRMs, the manuals are available on their website so you can read through them to find out what features they have or don't have - it might help you make a decision.
Oct 26 Update:
So, I've been using this watch for over a month now and I've concluded the following:
1. It REALLY bugs me that it doesn't have a back light. In this day and age you'd think it would be standard. SUUNTO, Listen up!
2. It is VERY attractive. I like the way it looks so much that I wear it everyday. (This is doubly why the lack of light bothers me because it doesn't function like a real watch). I receive many compliments about it.
3. Soooo many times I have accidentally deleted the workout I'm currently on after hitting the pause button. The Question it asks you is: "Stop?" And you have to select "yes" or "no". Not so hard, but if you get stopped by someone asking you the time, you might accidentally press "yes" thinking, yes I want to pause. Doh! I wish it had no question and just gave you the "Continue" or "Stop" options. That could just be me... but I've stuffed that up at least 3 times and deleted my workout info unintenionally. Also, it's meant to pause for up to an hour. I hit pause for about half and hour, restarted it then hit pause again thinking the hour would start again but it stopped after probably around half an hour without my asking it to and with no warning. That was frustrating. Because it doesn't save details of more than your last workout, if you're on the go, like I was you might again accidentally delete your hard work with no recompense. (If it saved all your previous workouts, that wouldn't be a problem).
I think this watch could be really fantastic if it just had a couple of those additional features. I recommend it to those of you who know how to press buttons properly. I notice it's $50 cheaper since I purchased it.

Suunto M4 Heart Rate Monitor - Women's Review

Suunto M4 Heart Rate Monitor - Women's
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently upgraded to this watch from a 4 year old T4. I chose this watch because of its price, and I didn't need to connect multiple Suunto devices (like a GPS pod or a step counter pod). This new M4 is VERY well designed. The button layout and operation is very intuitive. The only thing you need to remember to do is hit the start stop button when beginning a workout.
The heart rate belt has also been redesigned. It is incredibly comfortable! Even when doing sit-ups! The strap material itself is thinner, and they incorporate well-designed metal contacts in the strap.
The exercise programs are good, and the watch tells you what you need to do for a workout every day. You need to check in with the watch fairly often to keep your heart rate within their "targets." Sometimes a 40 minute workout can drag on an additional 10 minutes if you don't keep your heart rate in the zone.
Overall, I am very happy with this purchase.
