To open this review I would like to explain the service and process I needed to go thru to get the equipment up and running, Then a product review.
I purchaced this in the middle of march and it was delivered 4 days late in a box that looked very torn up. It was only being held together by the plastic bands, the box had been torn apart at both ends. Because I received it late I did not have time to assemble it for a week. When I began to assemble I noticed that I was missing screws, bolts, and the 'included' tools. So I went online to ask about this. On the Stamina website a form is provided for serial number to be included with any request. I went over every part included and every page of the manual and could not come up with a number. I found a place in the manual that told me where to look for the sticker with the number, but I did not have any such sticker. I sent the request anyway with my explination. After 2 weeks I had no response so I called their support number. A friendly person told me that she could see my request in the system but there was a delay getting parts for this item because it was receiving a lot of orders for parts. A package was eventually shipped to me and it included almost everything I needed. I tried to assemble again and got as far as step 6. I needed a carrige bolt to go thru the beam that was not included. I decided to go around stamina on this one and purchaced the bolt at Lowes. The instructions are very plain and would do well to take a page from IKEA and give a few more pictures.
Now my bike/rower is working and ready. 2 months after purchace.
A metric socket set is a big help if you want to assemble quickly. The provided slim flimsy wrench is a pain.
PRODUCT REVIEW.
The bike / rower is completly as described in function. The computer however is very poor. The handheld heartrate monitor is like a carnival weight guesser. I am a very in shape 27 year old and i can check my heart rate before i begin working out and it will read 95-105. during my workout the numbers jump all over from 70 to 115 with no reason. I have tested this theroy many times before adding this to my review, it does not measure a good BPM. The buttons other than MODE do not function and must be for asthetics. The bike display does turn on when the rower or bike is used and turns off by itself as it should. The calories burned is very optomistic compared to the gear at my gym. The other readouts are good but when taken as a whole I largly disregard the readouts altogether except for time of workout. Needless to say the computer here is the large dissappointment of the item.
The magnetic system for bike and rower are good. It provides a good range of resistance but I don't beleive that the resistance is tied into the 'calories burned' computer as level 8 registers same as level 2.
There could be a tougher setting too, as for rowing at maximum resistance is still a bit soft for the strong arm. I was hoping for some extra excercise by holding the row bar palm up and pulling for curls but there isnt enough 'weight' to make this worthwhile for me.
The rower is very quiet! This is a redeeming quality that the bike really needed. The bike is quiet too but can get clanky if you accellerate hard as the weight shifts laterally. This is rare however.
The rollers and pedals seem up to the task and look and feel durable. I will update if needed if parts wear out prematurly. The fold up is quick and very easy. I actually had no intention of ever folding this away after I assembled it. Now i realize how effortless and quick it is I have been folding it in the corner. The seat is adaquate and built for the 20 minute workout. Beyond a half hour I find the firmness too much to continute to sit, especially when using as a bike. I have boney hips however and I do find a lot of workout equipment seats too wide and hard.
I weigh 180 and am 6'3" I can extend fully with the rower and never hit the rear stopper. Also I have plenty of legroom to lock in the bike and could actually extend the seat and lock it in a position for an even loger legged person. I wish cars were this roomy.
The item is easy to handle, lightweight enough to move alone. I am overall glad to have it and hope it stands up to continued use, it looks like it will. Well worth the money just for its solid feel and apparent quality. Apart from getting it up and running I can definatly reccomend this piece of equipment. ITEM 4/5CUSTOMER SERVICE 2/5Overall 3.

Featuring a battery-operated monitor displaying speed, distance, time, calories burned, and heart rate, this two-in-one machine combines a recumbent bicycle and a rower for two types of low-impact strength and cardio workouts. Moving a pin switches from one mode to the other. In either bicycle or rower mode, magnetic resistance provides a quiet, smooth workout, whose intensity can be varied by turning an eight-position knob without interrupting a workout. A foam-padded seat glides on a ball-bearing roller system along an aluminum rail during rowing, and adjusts to fit different leg lengths for recumbent biking. For bicycling, oversized pedals and adjustable foot-straps hold feet securely to improve pulling motion, in addition to pushing motion. For rowing, a heavy-duty nylon strap and foam grips keep hands stable and comfortable. Assembled, the machine measures 74-1/4 inches long x 23-1/2 inches wide x 34 inches high and weighs 108 pounds. Folded for storage, it measures 34 inches long x 23-1/3 inches wide x 56-1/2 inches high.
About Recumbent Exercise Bikes Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out.
The term recumbent literally means "lying down." Exercising in a recumbent or reclining position allows the user to have full ergonomic back support, without causing strain on the arms, neck and shoulders, all of which can be common effects of using an upright bicycle. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

Kettler Folding Coach LS Rowing Machine Review

Kettler Folding Coach LS Rowing Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After searching several makes and models I settled on the Kettler Coach. I gave it a long trial before reviewing (bought in April 2010). First impression was it was a nice machine and would last. The folding option is about worthless, there are no wheels to tip it up on after folding to move the machine as other models do. Folding it merely lets you keep it in place and make it smaller, leaving it sticking up in the air. I finally put rugs under it to slide it out of the way when not in use. It's a really long machine, I don't have tons of space to just leave it where it is.
The heart rate monitor did not work, Kettler sent a new one, but I had to replace it. The new one didn't work either, and now the flywheel had a catch in it, at times not allowing the rope to recoil. Kettler's techs had me take the machine apart to assess what was wrong. They said I could replace the flywheel, until I reminded them that my warranty includes service. They finally sent someone out who replaced the flywheel and the computer. Yeah! It worked. Oh...then I turned on my TV to work out. No more heart rate monitor. Huh? Could that really be the problem? My treadmill's monitor in the same room in nearly the same location works just fine. Kettler then said that is a not so uncommon problem with heart rate monitors (funny, no one thought of this when it didn't work before and when I inquired about the machine before purchase). No one cared anymore that the heart rate monitor didn't work, they said to try turning the machine around to face the other way. Gonna be hard to watch the TV then. I settled in and decided that it was mine no matter what and there is no heart rate monitor. Now the foot straps are broken. I'm waiting to hear back if they are going to send new ones. I really don't care what else goes wrong (or maybe right), but this machine has been a piece of junk. I bought a used, cheaper model prior to this and at least got 3 trouble free years out of it. At $300 it was only a hundred dollars a year (and I thought that was expensive, ha!). The Kettler hasn't made it a year yet. Waste of $1000. Oh, wait, it was only $999.

With its non-wearing, balanced Magnetic-Brake System and center-pull oar, the Kettler folding Coach LS rowing machine provides an efficient total body workout in the comfort of your own home. The Coach LS is equipped with a sophisticated LCD training computer that displays your time, oar strokes, current cadence, cumulative distance over a training session, heart rate, and kilojoules--a precise measure of energy consumption. As a result, it's easy to track your workout progress both in real time and over the following weeks and months, helping you get the most from every fitness session. The computer also works in tandem with the wireless Polar T34 heart rate transmitter (included) to calculate your upper pulse rate limit and ideal recovery time, so you don't work too hard or too little, both of which can derail an otherwise productive workout session. Best of all for rowing buffs, the Coach LS makes it feel like you're actually rowing on the water, with infinitely variable magnetic resistance and biomechanically designed footplates that offer a natural pivoting action and a full longitudinal rowing motion range.
The Coach LS is built for the long haul, with a sturdy powder-coated frame and transport casters with top-grade ball bearings in the seat's rollers. The bearings provide a silky-smooth glide along the maintenance-free chrome-plated steel rails. And even though the Coach LS is primarily a rowing machine, it also supports up to 16 distinct muscle-building exercises via the Quick Attach backboard and front footplate (both included). Designed to fold up for easy storage, the Kettler Coach LS is a must-have for committed workout enthusiasts.

Rowbike 720 Sport Review

Rowbike 720 Sport
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Where to start...I'm 6'5" was 275 lbs and purchased a 726 King from Rowbike. Assembling the bike was no problem but I can follow instructions and mechanically minded. A cable adjuster was missing so I robbed one from an old motorcycle in the garage. Took about 20 minutes to feel comfortable riding it. The best advice is to be aware of how you move the handle bars...since you pull and steer with the handle bar, you must use equal pressure pulling back. Pull harder on one side and that's the direction your going. The website video's do a good job with learning to ride this machine.
This is a "workout" machine it will get you in shape and although I did not loose much weight, my waist got smaller. I would regularly ride 10 miles on a daily basis and averaged 10 mph. What's interesting about a Rowbike as oppose to a rowing machine, is feeling your muscles engage as you maintain balance. The outdoor aspect is a great plus for your workout. Overall quality of the structure is very good and explains the lifetime warranty for the Frame, Power Lever, and Fork. Where this machine falls short is the components i.e. rear gears, wheels, drive train, shifter, steering cabling.
The BAD. My machine came with a friction shifter the current machine comes with a Micro Shifter. For the uninitiated this sounds impressive but in reality its not. The gear set is lowest cost units available and can be found on the cheapest Chinese made bikes. Also my bike mechanic questioned the use of a derailleur (the device used to shift gears) because every power stroke pulls the derailleur forward, accelerating the wear on the spring. In addition the bearings used to support and slide the seat are made of plastic (required to reduce friction) and crack. Be prepared to purchase spares. As for the wheels, they are also bottom self units. The forward propulsion of this machine puts a LOT of torque on the rear wheel, the evidence for this is abnormal wear on one side of the rear tire. After breaking 3 spokes I upgraded the rear wheel from a 32 spoke aluminum to 36 spoke steel Rino Lite rim. No more broken spokes or warped wheel. Experienced 6 flats before I figured out the rubber ban used between the rim & the tube was over sized. Switched to rim tape & no more flats.
As relayed earlier I had a friction shifter and when I replaced the rear wheel I explored new gearing and shifter. Again I upgraded to a Shimano Delore 9 speed cassette with a Delore shifter. Although the overall gearing did not change, having the two additional gears smoothed the overall ride ability of the Rowbike. If you fall over while on this bike the seat will shear off its mounting brackets. If you ride over bumps you could (I did) bounce off the seat. Also be advised, in the low gear, the chain will rub the tire. And finally this bike requires constant minor maintenance. In comparing this to a regular bike, you must continually tighten the steering hub and make sure the cable adjustments are correct...pull on the power lever and have the handlebars swing hard into you, will flip you off the machine.
The GOOD. Customer support is the best. When you get a call from the owner of the company to check up on issues, its impressive. The seat was replaced with a more robust model, additional bearings were included. The D cam was replaced and they were ready to replace the power lever if I could not work out the D cam upgrade (stripped bolt threads)
SO IS A ROWBIKE worth the money. That depends...as its currently built the answer would be no. I spent an additional 300 dollars to get it to an acceptable mechanical level. 1500 dollars for a specialized exercise machine is tough to justify. Local bike shops are reluctant to work on it so good mechanical skills are needed to maintain it. The power train needs improvement and I've suggested a NuVinci CVT transmission as the answer to keeping the chain in a straight line (no wheel rubbing), with the additional benefit of a better gear ratio to help get the machine over hills. A wider and shaped handlebar would expand the upper body muscles employed. Better wheels to handle the torque. For the money spent you can purchase a mid level regular bike that is more useful and can achieve your exercise goals.

A good machine. I've used it for about three years. The only problem: the screws are constantly coming loose. They should have put lock washers on. Someday I'm going to do this myself. You can definitely do some serious sweating. Except for the screw problem, it is very durable.

This unit was very easy to assemble, does not take a rocket scientist. The action is very smooth and the resistance is adequate but will not be adjustable for that I will knock one star off. We'll see how long this unit will last, but for now it's a nice addition to my home gym.

Concept2 Model E Indoor Rowing Machine Review

Concept2 Model E Indoor Rowing Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ride dirt bikes, and this machine offers the perfect workout for the areas I need help with most. Shoulders, Back and Arms. Some people say the legs get a good workout as well, but I would say that is not the case. Very little benefit to the legs, but it is easy on the knees.
Overall the Concept2 Model E is a great machine. I am glad I chose this over the Model D just for the higher stance, PM4 and maintenace free (except for oil) chain. The machine came delivered in two boxes, both of which were pretty beat up when they arrived, but nothing was damaged.
Putting the machine together took me about 30 minutes, and the instructions were OK. For the money I paid for this machine, I was hoping for a little bit better overall quality. Some of the screws did not line up really well with some of the holes for assembly. I may have even stripped one trying to get it in there, but it seems to be holding on ok. Also there is more plastic than I thought there would have been. The two main parts of the rower join together with a plastic fitting, which did not really snap together as I thought it should. This fitting I think should be metal for a more solid, secure and lasting fit. So far no problem with the plastic fitting though, but I never take it apart and stand it up either.
The action of the rower is excellent. I would like to see a bit more adjustability, as I feel like I want a bit more resistance, but can't get it. As you row harder the resistance does increase, although not as much as I would like, but still a great workout, and I am happy overall. I have the wind resistance set as restrictive as it will go, and that helps somewhat.
Overall these are the pros and cons as I see them, keeping in mind that I have owned the machine for about 3 months now, and use it very frequently:
Pros:
*Overall great quality machine.
*Rowing action is excellent.
*PM4 rechargable battery is self charging from the rower action, so no need to worry about batteries.
*PM4 games are actually very good, and can motivate a workout!
*Seat height is perfect, and I think an advantage over the Model D.
*Seat movement is super smooth and secure
*Love the nickle plated chain. Should last a long time
*The upper body workout can't be beat!
Cons:
*A bit too much plastic: Cheap plastic wheels, plastic handlebar mounts, plastic extension arm for the PM4, plastic fitting where two parts of the rower hook together.
*Screws don't line up perfectly when assembling, although I only really had trouble with one, there was another that was close. The rest where ok.
*Assembly instructions were a little vague.
*I would like to see handlebar options. I would have liked a little wider bar with smaller grips, but I can live with the standard bars ok.
If you are trying to decide between the Model D and Model E, I would highly recommend you spend the extra money on the Model E. It is an excellent rowing machine that should last longer than you.

I checked out many models and settled on this one. I know the "Concept" models are the benchmark however the experience of rowing on them is too mechanical for me.
The WaterRower gives you the very pleasant sound of water swooshing about with each stroke and the resistence is very life-like. They have a much better performance monitor now although I use virtual racing software (NetAthlon) that makes for an incredible experience. Nothing like seeing your own boat, the oars moving in conjunction with each pull while the scenery goes by.
As for losing weight? I can't figure out why but it seems to beat running and you sure exercise more muscle groups...
1 Month Running 30 Mintues Per Day (every day): Lost 6 lbs.
1 Month Rowing 30 Mintues Per Day (every day): Lost 24 lbs.
A very solid rowing machine, excellent warranty and a pleasure to look at, also stores in a closet quite easily.

Rowing has long been recognized as the perfect aerobic pursuit, with naturally smooth and flowing movements that don't tax the joints but do boost the heart rate. Now you can take your rowing experience to the next level with the WaterRower Classic rowing machine. Using the same principles that govern the dynamics ofa boat in water, the WaterRower Classic is outfitted with a "water flywheel" that consists of two paddles in an enclosed tank of water that provide smooth, quiet resistance, just like the paddles in an actual body of water. As a result, the machine has no moving parts that can wear out over time (even the recoil belt and pulleys don't require lubricating or maintaining). More significantly, the water tank and flywheel create a self-regulating resistance system that eliminates the need for a motor. As with real rowing, when you paddle faster, the increased drag provides more resistance. When you paddle slower, the resistance is less intense. The only limit to how fast you can row is your strength and your ability to overcome drag. And unlike conventional rowing machines, which tend to be jerky and jarring, the WaterRower Classic is remarkably smooth and fluid.
From a fitness perspective, the WaterRower Classic works 84 percent of your muscle mass, helping tone and strengthen your muscles while burning far more calories than most other aerobic machines. The exercise is also low impact, as it removes all the body weight from the ankles, knees, and hips, but still moves the limbs and joints through a full range of motion--from completely extended to completely contracted.
The WaterRower Classic is outfitted with a Series 4 performance monitor that's designed to balance technical sophistication with user-friendliness. The monitor--which includes six information and programming windows, six QuickSelection buttons, and three navigation buttons--displays your workout intensity, stroke rate, heart rate, zone bar, duration, and distance. Plus, the monitor is compatible with an optional heart rate chest strap and receiver, which helps you optimize your workout and achieve your exercise objectives.
The WaterRower Classic is handcrafted in solid American black walnut, which may vary in color from rich brown to purple/black. The black walnut was chosen due to its marvelous engineering properties, especially its ability to absorb sound and vibration, which enhances the WaterRower's quiet performance and smooth operation. Black walnut, like all woods used in the construction of the WaterRower, is a premium hardwood with incredible longevity and dimensional stability. In addition, the wood is harvested from replenishable forests and is hand finished with three coats of Danish oil to give it a deep luster and warmth.
Other details include dual rails with four corner wheels that increase seat stability and reduce the amount of sweat buildup; a frame that flips upright for handy storage; and a weight capacity of up to 1,000 pounds. The WaterRower Classic measures 84 by 21 by 22 inches (W x H x D), weighs 117 pounds (with water), and carries a one-year warranty on the frame and components (WaterRower will upgrade the warranty to five years on the frame and three years on the components with the completion of a registration form).

Tunturi R60 Rowing Machine Review

I really wanted to like the Tunturi R60 because the Concept2 rower is such a cliche. On paper, the R60 seemed to offer a lot: dual track seat, compact folding design, quiet electromagnetic resistance, and a bit of Scandinavian panache. In reality, the plastic membranes covering the R60's control buttons on the handle and the computer housing cracked from repeated use, its slippery seat did not conform to my posterior, its non-adjustable foot rests were uncomfortable and caused my gym shoes to squeak relentlessly, and its nylon belt connecting the handle to the flywheel made annoying noises as it abraded against the flywheel housing. To my chagrin, I wound up owning a Concept2 Model D...which costs far less than the R60 and, in my estimation, works far better. Buyer beware.

Stamina 15-9003 Deluxe Conversion II Recumbent / Rower Review

Stamina 15-9003 Deluxe Conversion II Recumbent / Rower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great piece of equipment. If you are wondering if quality is compromised as a result of the 2-for-1 deal, you'll be very happy to know that it isn't. This is a smooth and quiet piece of equipment. I am very impressed with it. It is of very nice quality.
It took me about an hour to put together because I was being very attentive to the directions and taking my time. At first sight, the instructions are slightly confusing but it only takes a few minutes of looking over everything to understand them.
The monitor is of nice quality and has several different modes: time, speed, calorie, pulse, RPM and distance. It's actually built into the bike/rower with this model as opposed to being on top like a very similar model that currently goes for $100 less. To me, it looks better built in as it is with this model.
Now that I've said that, what I specifically like about this bike/rower is that is really more like a 3-in-1 machine. You not only get the bike/rower combination but they built it for strength training as well.
I was pleasantly surprised by this as I didn't know that was included. (I had searched through countless exercise bikes and forgot the exact details of this one except for the essentials.) But when you receive it, the manual includes diagrams of strength training exercises you can do with the machine and how you can do them using it.
You can do the following strength training exercises with the machine: back and abdominal, bicep curls (works the arms), upright row (works the arms), buttocks, leg stretch, and leg extension.
And as I said, they include diagrams/pictures of these in the instruction manual.
This extra bonus, for someone like me goes a long way, seeing as I was trying to find some easy/clutter free ways to strength train besides using resistance bands.
So now I can use it for building muscle/strength to increase my metabolism as well. In the end, I'm very glad I parted with the cash in order to get it.
This bike/rower/strength trainer is everything I need. I'm a mildly lazy exerciser. I currently have Xavix and like using it with the JMat as well as the boxing and tennis games to walk/run indoors (in place) among other exercises, but sometimes I want to sit down and work out.
Doing that everyday just got boring. I wanted to mix it up a bit so I figured a bike/rower would help a lot. Especially since I could even alternate between biking and rowing to keep those two interesting (5 min. biking, 5 min. rowing and so on). And adding my walking/running, boxing and tennis to it gives me a lot more to do and have fun in the process again.
I used to hate getting up in the morning to exercise but this bike/rower/strength trainer made it exciting again. Now I look forward to biking, rowing and strength training and more. I got a mini home gym going.
I highly recommend this product for anyone who's lazy like me and wants something easy/fun to do to keep in shape.

Concept2 Model D Indoor Rowing Machine Review

Concept2 Model D Indoor Rowing Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own the Concept 2 Model D. I purchased it last year after an exhausting field and internet search. I "casually" used it for several months until a few months ago when I became very serious about losing weight. I now use the rower 5 to 6 times a week 30 minutes minimum- with an average of 45 minutes and occasionally (usually Saturday mornings) a 60 minute workout. I do not overdue the individual workouts, and maintain about a 23 stroke per minute rhythm.
I chose this rower for several reasons. First, the great reviews on internet websites. Secondly, I was very impressed with the sales associate. He did not try to "oversell" me, instead he convinced me that for my needs the model D was more than sufficient. Third, I was fortunate enough to try one out at a friends home gym- I was impressed. Lastly- this is a high quality machine- very sturdy and well designed.
I utilize this machine, along with a low carb diet and walking 3-4 miles 2 to 3 times a week, to lose 75 pounds! I started this last September 2008- weighing in at nearly 300 pounds at 6'1". As of now, end of March 2009, I am down to 225 and feel great! That's it, no magic other than consistency! If it were not for this rower, my efforts would have been much, much less successful. (I tried walking alone on previous attempts and walking by itself as the main exercise did not cut it for me for drastic weight loss.)
This rower offers a full body workout! I ordered the machine and it arrived inside of a week. The rower literally snaps together. I did call customer service with a couple questions, and they were very helpful and walked me through the set-up. It is sturdy for big guys like me. The only maintenance I have done is an occasional wiping of light oil on the pull chain- that's it. The machine is not so noisy that I can't watch TV while working out. I strongly recommend this rower!TWO YEAR UPDATE (2/12/11)- I still use the rower and it is still in PERFECT condition! The seat is a bit softer but no wear or tear. 4 friends have purchased this rower after trying out mine. About a year ago I reached 215 pounds using the same program described above. Then, totally unrelated to the rower, I pinched a nerve in my right shoulder from an old dislocation I had as a kid. I had to stop rowing because of the discomfort. Within 6 months I gained 10 pounds and was up to 225 again. My shoulder had healed so I tried this rower again, only this time instead of extended cardio several times a week, I incorporated the rower with Dr. Al Sears high intensity interval training, three times a week for about 12-15 minutes. All I can say is "wow", within 6 weeks I blasted 25 pounds off with no discomfort. The rower was perfect for his method! I also experimented with a powerlung, and used it for once a week, 10 minutes at low intensity. My lung power greatly improved. Although I have not religiously used the powerlung once a week, I try to use it whenever I am in the mood- about once every two weeks. The result has been great.

Whether you already row or are considering rowing as a way to keep in shape, cross train for another sport, or compete on the water, the Concept2 Model D indoor rowing machine is a terrific choice. Rowing offers several benefits over other exercises: it exercises your entire body, including the arms, legs, chest, back, and abs; its low-impact rhythm is easy on the knees and ankles; it burns a ton of calories because it uses so many muscle groups; and it relieves stress. The Model D adds to these benefits by offering such features as a quiet flywheel that’s designed to minimize noise while providing the smooth feel of rowing on the water, along with a spiral damper that lets rowers choose the feel of a sleek, fast boat or a slow, heavy boat.
The Model D offers a different rowing experience than the rowing you did as a kid. The difference lies in the sliding seat, which compresses and extends your legs with every stroke, in addition to the more obvious work being done by the back and arms. This promotes both strength and flexibility throughout the wide range of leg and arm motion, while challenging the back in the middle of the stroke and the abs at the end. In addition, customers say that the rhythmic nature of rowing helps clear the head and ease the stress of the day.
The Model D comes with a PM3 performance monitor that accurately tracks your distance, speed, pace, calories, and watts, with five display options for rowers--all data, force curve, rowing with a pace boat, bar chart, and large print. The monitor also provides easy menu-driven operation, letting you access a powerful list of features, including preset and favorite workouts, trials against a previous performance or pace boat, FISH games, animated rowers that teach techniques, and multiple language options. If motivation is what you need, you'll find it in Concept2’s online challenges, Million Meter Club, and online ranking.
The Model D is also notably comfortable, with an ergonomic handle that allows for a natural arm and hand position; an aluminum rail capped with a stainless-steel track for smooth seat movements; and adjustable Flex-foot footrests. Other details include a removable LogCard that stores your workout data and personal preferences; built-in heart rate monitoring with an optional Polar receiver (sold separately); a USB interface for easy data transfer to a PC or Mac; caster wheels for quick mobility; and a collapsible design for efficient transport and storage.
The Model D requires a footprint of 9 by 4 feet for use and offers a weight capacity of 500 pounds. It also carries a five-year warranty on frame parts and a two-year warranty on moving parts and the monitor.

After having purchased an inexpensive piston rower (which was not so bad,
by the way) I tried in a fitness shop some magnetic rowers and I found them much better. So I shopped around and I tried the Tunturi R30, The Kettler Coach, the Fitness Quest Integrity 3000, the Water Rower, the Lifecore R900, the Life Span and the Body Craft VR 100. I found that the Body Craft has the best value for money ratio. It is built very well, its ergonomics are handsome, the workout is fantastic, and the price is very acceptable.
I particularly like the position of the footpedals and of the handle-bar,
which I think is perfect.
It also looks like it is very durable and it will last forever. I am very much satisfied, and would recommend it to everyone looking for a classy rower at a very honest price.

Kettler Kadett Outrigger Style Rower Rowing Machine Review

Kettler Kadett Outrigger Style Rower Rowing Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I initially tried to order my Kettler Kadett from a company called Mercantila, a.k.a. Rowingmachines.com. It was a complete disaster and nightmare including some false advertising, trying to cover up some mistakes on their part which caused about a month of delays, some horrible customer service (or lack thereof), some false charges, and a lot of headaches. Eventually enough was enough and I wound up ordering it directly from Amazon, which cost me a few bucks more, but was well worth it.
The machine comes mostly disassembled and took about an hour and a half to put together. There were a few confusing moments as the instructions are only pictures and no text, so making sure you have the right part takes a little extra focus. It came with all the tools necessary except an allen wrench which was necessary for one small thing.
In terms of overall quality, it's very high. I'm not concerned about this thing breaking, nor does it rattle or have ill-fitting parts. That said, the housing for the computer is a little wimpy and doesn't attach very securely to the main body as I've knocked it off a couple times. A small piece of tape at the base has kept it firmly locked into place since.
Some people have complained about the location of the straps on the foot plates. I actually find their location ideal, although they do tend to loosen themselves during a workout. I made a trip down to the store and bought some velcro which I sewed onto the straps. It took 15 minutes to do and I now have the best foot straps in the world.
The best thing about this machine, and the reason I bought it, is that it REALLY DOES in fact mimic an actual rowing motion. When I close my eyes I can actually believe I'm on a boat on the water which makes my workouts much more pleasant. So for anyone with any doubts, you can in fact believe the hype, it IS like rowing a boat. Additionally, all the action is very smooth. The seat is very sturdy and comfortable and it doesn't wobble. The arms are also smooth and the grips spin freely.
One other reason I bought this machine is that I'm very tall and the Kadett adjusts to accommodate my size. It does this by placing the footboards on a center beam that slides inside the central housing. This beam can be adjusted allowing my incredibly long logs to get a full complete extension without the seat hitting the end of it's track.
Although it takes up a lot of space during use due to the outrigger style "oars", it does fold up to the size of a traditional hydraulic rowing machine in about 30 seconds. I keep mine leaned up against a wall and out of the way in an adjacent room, and as it's not very heavy it isn't a big deal pulling it out every morning.
One problem I did discover, is that the numbers on one of my adjustable hydraulic pistons is misaligned. So it was a minor nuisance to set the resistance initially as I had to do it by feel.
In preview, the Kadette appears to be overpriced compared to virtually all other hydraulic rowing machines. But it really is a completely different kind of animal in terms of the rowing action that makes it worth the price tag. It still suffers from a slow start as the pistons come up to temperature like any other hydraulic rowing machine, but the rowing motion is like heaven.

WaterRower Club Rowing Machine in Ash Wood with S4 Monitor Review

WaterRower Club Rowing Machine in Ash Wood with S4 Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Through the past several months I have spent a lot of time researching various rowing machines both on the Internet and by visiting various fitness equipment dealerships. I long decided that if there was one piece of fitness equipment I was going to ever buy it was a rowing machine. For years I have been working out on the well-known Concept2 in various local gyms. The Concept2 is a great fitness machine, but I wanted to see if there was something better out there, before throwing $1000+ on this machine. So, I came across the WaterRower, and boy am I glad that I did! Since I have some experience using the Concept2 (lately Model D), I can list some personal impressions about the two machines so you will have some comparison data. First of all though, let me point out that I purchased my rowing machice for home use. I am a fairly fit individual, but not an Olympic athlete. My main desire in purchasing a rowing machine was to loose / maintain weight, maintain cardiovascular fitness and relieve stress. In all of these categories, the WaterRower came through with shining colors! So, without further ado, some comparison between the WaterRower and Concept2, and then some pointers about the WaterRower itself.
Why is the WaterRower a better equipment in my opinion?
-A lot smoother rowing action than the Concept2. Not only because the patented Water Flywheel, but also because instead of a chain, the WaterRower utilizes pulleys and a high-strength strap. The strap rolls on industrial grade pulleys, and is practically silent. The Concept2's chain makes a noise as the metal chain advances over the cogs, and because of this, it also rattles. It takes away from the natural feeling of rowing.
-The Water Flywheel's sound is incredible. The swooshing water in the tank is incredibly soothing and relaxing. The whirr of the air-resistance on the Concept2 does not compare.
-This one is objective, but in my opinion the WaterRower, especially the wood series looks a lot more aesthetical than the metal construction Concept2.
-The clutch on the WaterRower is incredible. On the Concept2, there always is a very slight jerk at the beginning of a stroke, because the clutch on that machine does not engage immediately as you start applying force to the bar. On the WaterRower, the action is instantaneous. It is imperceptible, and the jerking feeling is non-existent.
-Storage: if you have limited space, the WaterRower beats anything else out there. Standing it up, it stores in as little of space as a kitchen seat. Stores in the corner neatly and looks good. The metal contraption of other rowing machines does not come close to this ease of storage. The Concept2 in particular must be folded first, before it can be reasonably stored. You won't want to do that setup every day, and you will want to use your equipment every day. With the WaterRower, the setup is 1 second. Simply flip down. That's it.
-Personally, I like the WaterRower's handle bar a lot more. It is oblong shaped, so it fits into your hand better. It is also covered in a soft touch material, that's a lot better than the hard plasticky feel of the Concept2's handle bar. Nonetheless, the shape of the bar matters more to me, and the WaterRower's bar is superior to anything else I tried.
-The WaterRower's seat is very comfortable. It glides on two rails placed about a foot apart, which lends it a lot of stability. There are vertical and horizontal bearings, 4 each, so there are 8 bearings in total. This gives the seat an incredible stability. I cannot attest to the longevity of this design, but common sense tells me that 8 bearings will lost a lot longer than 2 on the Concept2. The seat material is just the right hardness, not too soft, no too hard.
-Assembly is a snap by the way. I do not know what's involved in assembling the Concept2, but the WaterRower's setup is really easy. If you ever took anything home from Ikea, and managed to put it together, you will have a lot easier time with your WaterRower rowing machine.
-I love the performance monitor. I bought the heart rate attachment (at $50 it's a no-brainer) and the heart rate zone programs are fantastic. Great motivator. Mind you, the Concept2 also comes with a heart rate monitor and it is just as good as the WaterRower in that regard, if not better.
What's good on the Concept2:
-The Concept2 is I believe designed for the professional athlete, the pro rower. It is still considered the top choice for training athletes.
-The Concept2 is exceptionally sturdy. If it lasts in a gym for years, it will never break down in home-use.
-The Concept2's performance monitor is more feature rich when it comes to professional training. I also miss its heart rate recovery analysis feature, which the WaterRower lacks.
-The Concept2 performance monitor comes with individual memory cards, so multiple users can use the monitor and record their exercise history. WaterRower doesn't have anything like that.
-The Concept2 performance monitor can be networked, so you can easily setup races in a gym setting between several units.
-The Concept2's monitor is more legible. No arguing about it. Larger, more readable numbers. Having said that, the WaterRower's monitor still looks a lot classier to me. And I don't stare at the monitor throughout the exercise.
Bottom line, I believe that while the Concept2 is a great machine, the WaterRower is a better fit for home use. Both of these machines will challenge you unless you are a very advanced athlete. Make no mistake about it; rowing is an extremely challenging exercise when done right. Learn how to row properly to avoid injury, take more enjoyment out of the exercise and to challenge you more. Rowing done in the right form will raise your heart rate much easier than rowing done incorrectly.
I wanted to say a word or two about the WaterRower's heart rate monitor and the optional heart rate attachment. Ever before I bought the WaterRower, I already had a cheap Nike hear rate monitor that I bought at Costco for $29. Pretty much the only thing it can do is show your heart rate. And that's all I needed. The chest strap of this heart rate monitor is compatible with the WaterRower heart rate receiver. Please do yourself a favor and get the heart rate monitor. I cannot begin to tell you how much of a difference it makes! Your target heart rate is a very narrow zone. For weight loss for instance, you should train between 60% to 70% of your maximum heart rate. This is a narrow, 10 bpm range. Without a monitor, it is impossible to remain in this range consistently. At $50, plus a heart rate chest-strap (for as low as $29) you will achieve much better results and will enjoy your WaterRower a lot more. The WaterRower will emit a slow beep when you're bellow your target zone, and a fast beep when you're rowing too hard for your chosen zone. You just enjoy the rowing, and all you have to do is keep the monitor silent. That is why I don't care that the WaterRower's monitor is not as legible as the Concept2's.
That's all I can think of right now; hope you found something useful in my review. I wholeheartedly recommend this incredible exercise equipment to anyone serious enough about exercising for various goals, let it be weight-loss, cardiovascular fitness or strengthening the lower back. (Oh, yeah, forgot about my sciatica! This machine is great in exercising the lower back and strengthening the muscles so you can avoid a flare-up of lower back pain. But - learn how to row properly first!) This equipment looks great, last a lifetime (hopefully) and is an excellent all-body, no-impact workout machine. It costs a lot. More than the average. But believe me, it is worth every dollar, simply because you will want to keep on getting on it. Lastly, it is made right here in North America, and I for one am happy to support our economy, instead of the Chinese economy for once.
Happy rowing! If I find anything wrong with it, I'll come back with an update.

Rowing has long been recognized as the perfect aerobic pursuit, with naturally smooth and flowing movements that don't tax the joints but do boost the heart rate. Now you can take your rowing experience to the next level with the commercial-quality WaterRower Club rowing machine. Using the same principles that govern the dynamics ofa boat in water, the WaterRower Club is outfitted with a "water flywheel" that consists of two paddles in an enclosed tank of water that provide smooth, quiet resistance, just like the paddles in an actual body of water. And unlike conventional rowing machines, which tend to be jerky and jarring, the WaterRower Club is remarkably smooth and fluid.
From a fitness perspective, the WaterRower Club works 84 percent of your muscle mass, helping tone and strengthen your muscles while burning far more calories than most other aerobic machines. The exercise is also low impact, as it removes all the body weight from the ankles, knees, and hips, but still moves the limbs and joints through a full range of motion--from completely extended to completely contracted.
The WaterRower Club is outfitted with a Series 4 performance monitor that's designed to balance technical sophistication with user-friendliness.
The WaterRower Club is handcrafted in solid ash and stained for color. The wood was chosen due to its marvelous engineering properties, especially its ability to absorb sound and vibration, which enhances the WaterRower's quiet performance and smooth operation. Ash, like all woods used in the construction of the WaterRower, is a premium hardwood with incredible longevity and dimensional stability. In addition, the wood is harvested from replenishable forests and is hand finished with Danish oil and urethane for protection.
Unlike its WaterRower Natural cousin, the WaterRower Club is designed for high-traffic areas, such as commercial gyms, studios, and rehabilitation clinics. Its dual black rails have been styled to prevent scuffing, while the other wood components are finished in an attractive rosewood, which is more resistant to soiling than the Natural model. Other details include four corner wheels on the rails that increase seat stability and reduce the amount of sweat buildup; a frame that flips upright for handy storage; and a weight capacity of up to 1,000 pounds. The WaterRower Club measures 84 by 21 by 22 inches (W x H x D), weighs 117 pounds (with water), and carries a one-year warranty on the frame and components (WaterRower will upgrade the warranty to five years on the frame and three years on the components with the completion of a registration form).

I don't know where to begin. I researched many types of exercise equipment and this one takes the cake. Check the manufacturer's well-built site for all the details on the product. I picked the cherry model for looks, but I'm sure any model would have suited my fitness needs. This rower is rock-solid, whisper quiet, comfortable and beautifully designed. When standing against a wall it looks like a piece of art. But it doesn't stay there long. My wife and I use it everyday. The resistance and motion is so smooth! I can't recommend this machine enough. You can even buy software to race other WaterRowers online. If you are really serious about an aerobic workout, look no further. The WaterRower is worth every penny and built to last.

Kettler Favorit Rowing Machine Review

Kettler Favorit Rowing Machine
Average Reviews:

This rower seems to be well built and very sturdy. However, buyer beware, the design of this machine contains one major, VERY IMPORTANT flaw having to do with the resistance adjustment. The resistance is controlled by tightening knobs on the side of the machine at the bottom of each individual piston. Loosen the knob and you are able to move the bottom of the piston up (to increase the resistance) or down (to decrease the resistance). Regardless of how much I tighten each knob the resistance always loosens up during my workout. Sometimes one side will come loose before the other, producing an uneven workout. Eventually both sides loosen and the workout is much too easy.
Which begs the question... Why didn't Kettler catch this problem during the testing phase of this product? I am extremely disappointed and would not recommend this product until Kettler comes out with a fix or different design with respect to the resistance adjustment.

Stamina 1215 Orbital Rowing Machine with Free Motion Arms Review

(More customer reviews)
We just assembled our new Stamina 1215 Orbital Rower. It took about an hour and a half. The machine feels pretty sturdy to me. Is it worth $279? Hard to say, but with everything so overpriced these days, who knows? The acid test is usually how long something lasts, so it will be worth the money if it gives several years of good service. I've done my first half hour of rowing and it's a fairly smooth action and relatively quiet. On some sites, a few people complained that the lowest setting is too tough for beginners, and I agree. But you can set the arms even a little lower than the bottom number, and this helps. I've had two rowing machines in the past and this one is as good or better than they were. I like the ability to set the back of the bar up higher which aids in getting off and on the rower. I was concerned about the 'orbital' action of the arms, but find it's easy to adjust to, and in effect, you can just row as normal and not use the orbital ability at all. I'm giving the unit a 5 for now since it seems to meet my expectations. I'll update later on, whether good or bad, once I've had the chance to use it several weeks.******Update after 2 weeks of use ****
This is the update I promised after using the rower for a couple of weeks. In my first review I asked myself the question, is the rower worth the money. I answered that by saying it depended how it held up over time. Well. The answer to that question is a resounding NO !!! If I could, I'd rate the unit one star for poor quality control, but Amazon's rating system won't let me go back and change it from the original 5 stars. I read the couple of reviews saying the shocks had broken down after a couple of weeks, and the one that slammed the unit for using plastic parts instead of metal, especially at this price. I chose to ignore those concerns in the face of the other positive reviews. It turns out that was a big mistake. After 2 weeks of use, the plastic rod that's used to attach the circular connecting loop on the end of the shock to the frame, snapped off. This piece is extremely important because it has to take the force of pulling back on the shock every time you row. And Stamina chose to make this piece out of cheap plastic instead of metal and it broke after using the rower a total of seven 30 minute sessions. This is totally unacceptable, not just for the inconvenience of having the rower disabled, but also the injuries it could cause if it breaks while you're intensely rowing. Since other people have shocks that broke after only 2 weeks, it's an obvious design flaw based on trying to save a few pennies using plastic instead of metal in a critical area. I also blame myself for not checking on the warranty. It's only 90 days for parts and labor. As you can imagine, because of this design flaw, I fully expect the other shock, or even the new one, to break after enough stress, and if I'm beyond the 90 days, I will have to pay for shocks for this unit. The shock broke on Thursday the 24th. I called Customer Service at 3:30 Central Time (they're supposed to be open until 5 CST). Nobody answered and nobody returned the call that day. The next day they called and took the info and said I would get a replacement shock in 5 to 7 days. So I'll lose a minimum of a week on my exercise program. Today is Sept. 30th, and I don't have the shock yet, so we'll see how long it takes. It's not very comforting to feel these shocks could let go any time during the heat of an intense rowing session causing injury or damage. I've had two other rowing machines over the years, both of which were used for extended periods of time, and the shocks were never an issue. Stamina has to be aware of the problems with these shocks because of the increasing complaints, and should issue a recall on them, and supply all users with new ones that support the connector with metal and not plastic. Until then I would recommend you avoid this rower completely.
****Another Update****
I've just become aware from the Epinions site that another person has had problems with the shocks on the Stamina stepper also, and is frustrated in having to buy replacement shocks after the warranty runs out. In my opinion, this means there is absolutely no question Stamina is aware their shocks don't last. And of course, it's the customer that has to pay additional money, above the purchase price, to keep the unit going. I can honestly say I will never consider buying a Stamina Products piece of equipment again.
****One Last Update****
I got the replacement shock and have had a few rowing sessions since then. But I began noticing the same problem another reviewer had with the rollers. The seat actually started to rumble, and it was because the plastic rollers were breaking down and getting grooved unevenly. The last two sessions were really annoying to say the least. Today the seat jammed up in mid-row and I couldn't continue. One of the back rollers has a deep, uneven groove in it, and won't stay in place. The other back roller is also getting grooved. I called to get replacement rollers, but now I'll lose another week of rowing while I wait. By the time I get the rollers, I will have had the rower 6 weeks, and will have lost two weeks to breakdowns. So if you're thinking of getting this rower (I hope not), you may have to plan on only using it 2/3 of the time, unless you build an inventory of spare parts. This has not proven to be a well made machine, as this is the second plastic part to break down in just a few weeks. I won't update my review any more. I think you can tell how I feel about this machine.

About Rowing Rowing provides an efficient, effective, low-impact workout that utilizes all the major muscle groups, including the back, legs, arms, abdominals and buttocks. It is also one of the best exercises for building a strong back, as well as one of the most effective low-impact aerobic exercises for increasing your metabolism. As a result, you can efficiently burn calories and fat without impacting your joints.
The continuous, non-impact movement of rowing can be broken down into three phases: the starting point is called the catch phase, followed by the drive phase, the finish, and the recovery. In the catch phase, knees are bent with shins vertical and shoulders and arms reaching forward. This phase mimics the point where the oars are being placed in the water. The drive phase is initiated by the legs. As the legs extend, your arms remain straight until the knees are mostly extended. Then the elbows flex bringing the oar handles into the upper stomach. In the finish, the legs are fully extended, your shoulders are back, your elbows are flexed, and the oar handle is against the upper stomach. For the recovery, your knees don't flex until after your hands pass over your knees and your arms and shoulders reach forward to begin the catch phase again.
Because rowing is an impact-free activity, it can be a lifelong form of exercise. It is always best to exercise in your target heart rate zone (70 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate).
